2016 Worlds Locations

Haven't heard why the delay for 2016 bids but maybe they will be discussed at the Fall Summit in September. There was some discussion going the other direction from having a Pro-Am again (unlikely) where only the Open Men and Women might be at one Worlds venue and there would be other Worlds to cover the other divisions. Just discussion though. Graham has quite a few interested Convention Bureaus trying to find out if they have the courses and experienced people in their area to submit a bid.

I spoke to Andrew and Michael at the PDGA in June about this because we have an interest in putting in a bid for Worlds. He said the bid packets would be sent out to interested parties in the next few months and a front page article would be posted on the PDGA site regarding this. Michael also said he would email me as soon as its ready. Don't know if it will go out in time for a decision this Fall, considering it takes time to put a bid together.

I can only assume they are making somewhat substantial changes to the bid requirements again. They released new Worlds bid documents in April 2012 when they first opened up for bids for 2013, 2014 and 2015. Bids for 2013 were due May 31st that year (I *think* Emporia had already been in discussions with them and Lemon Lake had a handshake agreement to be able to host on short notice). The '14/'15 bids were due Aug 31st, 2012, so you had a little over three months to prepare a package for tournaments two and three years out. They awarded all but the '15 Am Worlds and Selinske US Masters at the Fall Summit in Sept 2012. New bid announcements for those two went out on Halloween 2012, and bids were originally due in January 2013, but pushed back to March. They awarded the events at the Spring Summit in May 2013, more than two years in advance of the events themselves.

We've heard that the new bids for 2016 (and beyond?) were coming out "soon" multiple times since then. Here we are in mid-August 2014, so even if the bids come out today, we're already behind schedule compared to the process that resulted in this year's Worlds in MN and OR, and way behind schedule compared to the 2015 awards to PA and MI. Best case scenario is that potential 2016 hosts would have a few months to prepare a bid and find out in late Fall / early Winter if they are hosting the events 18-21 months later.

Good luck! It'd be great to see Worlds in Illinois.

I agree, does the Chicago area have the courses to pull it off?

The Chicago area wouldn't be able to pull it off. There's some nice courses in the area, for sure, but there are simply not enough courses close together to be able to do this.

I wasn't talking about Chicago but I do believe the Joliet Area does have enough to pull off an Am Worlds. I doubt that's ever going to happen. Good luck Nate!

Joliet could potentially pull it off but I think they are probably a course short. Also, pretty sure they would need new baskets at Highland as well. They'd have to get more security though because there's some crazy stuff that happens in Joliet! :)

Agree about the baskets at Highland. If Milwaukee could pull of a Worlds using 4 course Joliet could definitely. 2 of those courses were subpar (Dineen & Dretka New) while the original Dretzka used the short tees.

With Highland, West Park, Channahon, Mokena, Lockport, New Lockport, & Manhattan that's a pretty good mix. Some work would definitely be made but 18 hole layouts at West & Mokena could be awesome.

That's a good point but I think the demand for Worlds is increasing from year to year and the PDGA may be pushing for more high quality courses. Not that Chicago doesn't have them so its a possibility. On a side note, Madison, WI applied for AM Worlds in 2014 and 2015 and was rejected and they have some nice courses.

I would love to see worlds in Eastern PA again now that I actually play disc golf

Maine can't do it. Maybe in a decade. Worcester could I think. You got maple hill, Buffumville, a tricked out Thompson, and a tricked out version of one of the other courses for open. Other divisions could play courses like pyramids, and others which I don't know but have heard of. Prolly would take some work but I could see mass doing a worlds in maybe 4 or 5 years.

^^^^
Ams worlds maybe. I don't think the quality of course is as good as it needs to be to make a worlds happen in eastern PA. There some really good courses but to make it work 2-3 of course would be between 45 minutes to an hour away from home base. Not sure if that type of drive would work

I was one of the three people primarily responsible for the Madison bids, and the proposed assistant TD. Yes, the primary reason we were told we didn't get the award was that we didn't have enough courses to provide the number of players they wanted and have a backup course or two just in case something happened at / to one of the proposed courses. We produced a proposed course rotation and schedule (based on past Am Worlds schedules) that met their listed criteria for number of courses and player capacity, and would have had nine temporary holes at one course. However, we didn't show any courses that would serve as a backup. They mentioned that many of the past events have had to use different courses than originally proposed, for whatever reasons, and that they were worried what would happen if one of our courses suddenly became unavailable. Emporia was allowed to have less than the required numbers in part because of the time constraints on the 2013 bids.

I'm very curious as to what changes will be in the bid requirements for 2016 and beyond. It seems odd for them to be taking so long unless they were making substantial changes to what they spent so long developing 2+ years ago. If they still claim they want raise the capacity of the event, it will be harder for some places to meet the criteria, even as more courses are being developed.

Me too. It's frustrating to know what I missed. Too bad I didn't start playing just 5 years earlier. Also sucks living in the LV most of my life then picking up the game when I moved to Bucks.

I feel like Allentown could definitely host Worlds again. With Little Lehigh, Jordan Creek, Nockamixon, Blue Mountain, Sellersville and Tinicum there's strong potential.

Backup courses are important. We used three different courses for Am Worlds in MN (Lions, Bryant and Blue Ribbon) than were proposed in the original bid (Bethel, Lakewood, Hyland) because they couldn't be ready, permission denied and course closed for chalet reconstruction.

Be nice to have Worlds back in OH, specifically cincy area..Had it back in 98 last I think

I wasn't impressed by Lions, but the other two were absolutely worthy as a Worlds venue, at least for Ams. Bryant is the best maintained public course I've ever seen (except for the single chemical porta-potty, that stunk :()
