Best 9 hole course?

Favorite not Best

First, for several reasons I really don't think it's possible to even talk about what is the "Best". Instead, IMO it's really only reasonable to talk about "Favorite".

Second, my ratings for my enjoyment of 9 hole courses is under attachments on the page "USA Reviews". Bluemont is my #1 favorite of 67 9 holers.

Third, seeing Schmidt in Elon NC on Danhyzer's list just flabbergasted me (and to have no other NC 9 holers on the list). I really can't conceive how it could be called one of the "Best" but maybe it's one of his "Favorites". If it's a favorite, then that's his preference.

I've been wanting to do a personal top 25 of 9 hole DGc's and here is my list.

#12-- Beth Schmidt Park DGc, Elon,N.C.

Bandemer Park - Ann Arbor

My favorite 9 hole course is Bandemer Park in Ann Arbor, MI.

My reasons:
-Three teepads per hole on different angles make for 27 unique holes
-The park never closes! We play glow here all year round.
-Woodchipped fairways.
-Location Location Location. 5 minute drive from downtown Ann Arbor. Right on the river. Wind protected.
-Well designed tricky holes. FUN.
-Local scene is booming right now, you are guaranteed to run into some buds out on the course on a nice day.

This course was only installed in 2006 and it's still rounding into form. It will only get better with age. I'm afraid that it will be choked with traffic this summer, although it hasn't been a problem yet.

In my opinion, it *is* reasonable to talk about "best" courses.

In my opinion, reasonable people can understand there are certain attributes that make one course "better" than another.

I agree........but you gotta agree on the "what" in "what is the course in question best for?".

To address this fundamental question for me, I settled on doing ratings the way I do them which is defining the "what" as "what courses best satisfy my addiction to play?". I then define the elements of what I find satisfies me, and then do my best to quantify them.

Butterworth Park
East Moline, IL

This is by far the best 9 hole course in Illinois. There is no course even close to it.

Multiple tees and pins. Great elevation. Water. Several par 4's.

Some pictures

I'll throw a vote toward butterworth as well...I've played a lot of niners in the expanses of IL an it crushes every niner I've played.

I'll second the Butterworth Park as being a very good one.

I wanted to see if anyone had mentioned this course before. Here it is!! This course was sick; easily my favorite 9-holer by an enormous margin. Another great option in the Quad Cities.

Hands down it has to be "The Brickyard" in Menomonie, WI

Technical - traverses hills, valleys and plateaus. Dual tees - both sets are concrete. 2 permanent pins per hole - yellow A pins and orange B pins with alternate placements. Permutations gives us 262,144 ways to play tee and pin combos (excluding alternate pins). 3 practice baskets on Putting Plateau marked for putting games with a warm up hole leading to the first tee. Beautiful sitting areas for picnics and grilling.

How could it get better than this??

...

Redbone road DGC, Vicksburg, Ms.

i love that course! such a cool place, i wish it were my house.

Bluemont in Arlington VA is pretty good. I really like the variety of holes but the park is busy and we had to wait on a lot of folks doing other park activities.

But Signal View in Maurertown VA is best I've seen. Three pads for each hole and great variety of open and wooded holes.

Mason DGC north of Cincinnati is the best 9 holer I've played. Plenty of elevation change, 7 of the tee shots are blind, and it has a fun signature hole. I've never seen a comparable 9 hole. Best 9 hole course in our area.

I would agree. A very good 9 hole course.

Burton DGC, Vashon, WA. My own private public course. I have so many layouts your mom couldn't find her way.

La Raza and Hellyer are a kick. Challenging. Long (at least Raza is). Technical. Varied. Great use of space.
Calling La Raza more difficult than DeLa is pretty questionable....it would have to be a pretty windy day in SJ for that to be true.
However, it is a rocking course. I was impressed with the locals too. Very cool.

GREAT course. You'll definitely get a workout with all of the elevation changes. If they can somehow get the erosion under control, it will be that great for years to come.

Also, WARP in Waupun, WI has a lot of promise. I played it this past weekend (granted, it was mostly in the snow), and had a blast.
