Strange Times: Your humble Blotter author was playing a game of disc golf at Kilborne Park last week with some friends when four police officers suddenly walked across the course. Surprised at seeing uniformed cops searching the deep woods, I asked if we had anything to worry about or if maybe I could help find a body. The officers told me they were looking for something they were hoping not to find. Witnesses had called in to report that they had seen four men having sex deep in the woods. From this point on, I will no longer call it a "foursome" when I throw discs with three friends.

And for the not so funny.

EASTVILLE — The Northampton County man met and befriended the young teenage boy under the guise of a common interest in disc golf.

Phillip Shannon Irwin, 44, of Jamesville began to take even more of an interest in the boy after his 14th birthday in June 2009. Through the game of disc golf, Irwin became friendly with the boy's entire family — even inviting them to dinner at the home he shared with his wife.

As weeks went on, Irwin found ways to spend time alone with the boy, said Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Beverly Leatherbury. Later the relationship crossed a criminal line when Irwin asked the boy about his genitals and they performed sex acts on video conferencing.

Irwin, commonly known by "Shane," his nickname, and the former owner of an Onancock computer store, on Monday pleaded guilty to the use of a communication system to solicit sex from a minor and both contributing to the delinquency of a minor and giving marijuana to one.

He has been in jail since his arrest and Irwin likely will be sentenced later this year after a presentence report is completed. Irwin also faces 11 criminal counts of possession of child pornography in Accomack County Court.

"The seduction was cut short when the boy's mother found out," Leatherbury told the court. She called it the "grooming of a 14-year-old boy for sex."

"It is a remarkable bit of manipulation that can only be realized by reading it all," she said, referring to transcripts of messages between Irwin and the teenager.

The child was only referred to in court by his initials. The News does not report the identities of victims of sex crimes.

Leatherbury told the court Irwin invited the boy to his Onancock computer store, made T-shirts for the boy and gave him gifts, including disc golf equipment and a laptop computer with a webcam, which made it possible for Irwin to communicate remotely with the child.

Irwin persisted in his pursuit of the teen and soon became a regular visitor at the home of the youth he called "his bestest buddy" in online messaging, said Leatherbury.

The boy was invited to spend nights with Irwin and was given special breakfasts of "purple pancakes and green eggs," she said. Sometimes they slept in a tent in the yard together.

The boy's mother began to get concerned at the frequency of the visits and the fact that Irwin came when the boy was at home alone. Her concern deepened when she came home from work and found them "cuddled up on the couch," said Leatherbury.

Her efforts to talk to Irwin about the situation were met with extreme hostility on his part.

Soon, the online chat sessions went from talk about disc golf to drugs — marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms. He piqued the boy's interest in trying them. He gave the boy marijuana on several occasions.

Soon online and in-person conversations turned to sex.

A transcript of their online conversations showed the boy uninterested, but Irwin persisted, asking questions about the size and appearance of the boy's genitals and whether or not he had pubic hair. After a time, he persuaded the boy to show him while they were live video chatting on the computer. Some of their video conversations went on for hours.

From the transcripts read by Leatherbury, it was clear that in the beginning the boy was extremely uncomfortable with the sex talk and said as much to Irwin. Irwin would apologize and then begin again in a later conversation.

It appeared that the entire process from the talk about sports, leading to drugs and then to sex, was planned to groom the boy to do what he wanted, she said.

It all came to an end for Irwin in the middle of December 2009, said Leatherbury. Irwin came to the boy's house and took him to Salisbury for a shopping trip. He planned to take the boy to a concert after the Christmas holiday.

The boy's mother went into his bedroom and saw that the computer was left on. She saw the two had been chatting all night long and some of the talk was about sex acts performed on video conferencing.

Not your standard "hello, here I am" 1st post! Welcome to the site!

Although the stories range from somewhat humerous to downright disturbing, I don't believe they shine a bad light on disc golf, in general. As disc golf continues its slow march into mainstream consciousness its bound to pop up as a side note in more stories. Which is fine as long as its not implied that disc golf had a negative impact on said story.

As a side note, society needs to do more to punish people who prey on our children. Parents must do more to protect their children also. The only dude that would ever spend the night with my 12 or 14 year old boys in a tent would be me! And if I found out someone was trying to influence them or improperly texting/chatting with them, I would knock all of his teeth out of his effing head, before I called the police! /end rant.

There is always something going on at one of our courses that will wind up on the news. We even have a weird guy very similar to the story above. Last weekend one of our younger players said he mentioned getting a big house so he could have some disc golf roommates.

VA's eastern shore was a weird place to me before i even read that

OMG, I just read that again and figured out who it was. This past weekend I was playing in a PDGA event and noticed that Shane wasn't there and was going to ask where he has been. The reason was that a few months back Shane posted on Facebook that he has been struggling with a secret that he was molested as a child. All of his friends posted positively about getting through it. I just pieced it all together. The way this turned out isn't good. He did a lot for disc golf in his area.

Aww come on, that kid was either juicing that dude for gifts or he wanted to bang, who the hell else would tolerate that kind of creepiness otherwise?

Lastly...lady...really? It took you that effing long? A dude spends five minutes with my kids and exhibits anything beyond normal common courtesy interest then I get suspicious.

What a joke.

I dont think its bad for disc golf.. I mean people still go to Catholic church.. I would much rather DG be associated with something pleasant but stories like this at least make people read/hear the words Disc Golf.. Carving another tiny little notch in the back of the public's brain.

We are talking about a 14 year old boy aren't we? I don't see how you could defend an adult who would do this to a child.

it just clicked with me too, i know you that guy is!

and his facebook pic has an adolesant boy (possibly himself when he was younger)

I went to FB and saw that and was about to post something about it but I let it slide. I've got to say that he did a lot for Eastern Shore disc golf. I went to many events there. He sure fooled us all.

yes he did do alot for ES DG, they got alot of kids involved in the sport too...hope this doesnt ruin the youth's interest in the sport

I'm not defending the adult, he is a creep and is in jail for good reason.

Are you telling me a 14yo boy that hangs out with a 30+ year old man doesn't think it is in the slightest bit off?

I am not saying the picking up and playing DG part, that would probably be ok but as a 30+ yo man I would be VERY leery of doing it for fear of being considered creepy.

Once you get to "snuggling", "texting", "late night camming" and other things including a "buddy" twice your age spending 400+ dollars on you you have crossed past friend and into DATING.

How could ANYONE not see that??

Have you EVER bought somebody you DIDN'T want to bang a gift over $100 that wasn't family????
