I'm bringing this thread over from my Reddit form check. So I'll do my best to bring over the content of the reddit thread to here in this post, and then move forward here.

Here is the original Form check video I posted:
https://v.redd.it/wbcs3ivhoue51

and my starting comment on it:
I'm trying to learn to form check myself, and get more distance and accuracy out of my drives. Here is a sequence of 5 throws with my drivers (20 year old Archangel, 160g Avenger SS, 167g Valkyrie (brand new), a relatively new 175g Beast, and a 175g Thunderbird). Those throws all landed between 250 & 320, the Thunderbird hitting around 250, the Beast and Valkyrie between 270-280, and the understable discs maxing out at 320 (but generally around 300).

I'd love any feedback, but even more so I'd like to learn what to look for. I'm getting a driving net setup in the backyard once it arrives, and I'd love to be able to critique myself rather than having to flood Reddit with form checks. Any tips on drills to focus on would be good too.

What I think I'm seeing (please correct me if I'm wrong here):

I'm still rounding/hugging myself and getting the disc behind my body and not getting my reach back all the way back
My head isn't getting back around much, I'm trying to keep my eyes downfield
I'm not staying upright, am I leaning too far back into the reach back? And then I'm leaning through the release

And here is the thread between Sidewinder22 and I.

Sidewinder22:

me:
I'm trying to focus on the second video, and how the loading the back leg is suppose to feel. I think I'm seeing the crease, but should I be "sitting down"/pushing my butt back into that when you are talking about internal hip rotation? https://youtu.be/Q5xfv9jPqZs?t=225 I'm trying to figure out what "right" feels like. Are either of these right?

Rotating back
Rotating back, focusing on "sitting" into it

Sidewinder22:
First one looked better, smoother. Second one looks like you are over-reaching back. Your lead shoulder needs to drop back underneath the trail shoulder, so lead side gets shorter and trail side taller/post up to swing against in backswing. You will want to open up your front foot for this drill.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1pkfJtVq-8

Sidewinder22:
Should feel like going down the stairs into plant.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJlX0ht0gyE

me:
Should I be consciously lift the outside shoulder or just focusing on getting the lead shoulder under? The stairs drill is tough around here, I'm in a one story and can't even think of where the closest staircase might be. But I see what you are doing there and going to try to find one.

I've got my first tournament on Saturday, a charity event for a local disc golfer who was in an accident, but after that I'm really going to focus on taking apart my drive and starting from 0.

Sidewinder22:
Swing Lead shoulder under. Trail shoulder/arm is the post/pole the lead shoulder/arm swings around like a tetherball.

You can do Swivel Stair with one stair or cinder block, small bucket, big downhill slope. etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuvujcEMLxs#t=3m18s

me:
I'm getting to do the Swivel Stair on a hill, but that is difficult to video with my camera stand.

Here's where I am on dingle-arm. https://gfycat.com/limpingadolescentdore. Do I still want to drop the front shoulder more? Should leaning over it, trying to find what is right so I can get the feeling on what is right down.

Here's crush the can. I had real problems with crush the can where I couldn't get my heel high enough and when it crushed down the can squirted out. Now it feels like I've got the crush down but I crush it and stop instead of completing the flow. The first gif is with a disc in hand, I think I was focusing to much on what I was doing with the disc and ended up really disconnected. The second gif I dropped the disc and tried to flow better.

PS - would it be easier if I'm move this discussion to the dgcoursereview forum? I'd like to keep progressing and not sure which will work better.

Sidewinder22:
DA - shoulder looks ok, but your stance looks a little too wide and pigeon toed and weird with your rear hand on your hip - rear elbow should be in or hanging next to body. Bring your heels closer to together under the hips and toes keep toes where they are so your feet are more flared out from each other instead of perpendicular. Might be swinging too fast, let gravity do the work on the way down and then feel where you can boost it targetward near the bottom. Try going all the way around overhead/windmill and also try some in slow motion. Relax and focus on swing to the target, like hammering a nail.

CC - You are turning open into the can and your arm/disc is going forward way before you crush. No need to swing the arm at all in this drill - keep it back. Crush the can and stop while your body /arm are still turned back away from target. Stance should start like DA feet flared out and front foot turns back while striding into can. You can crush something smaller, smaller can, cigarette pack etc. just want to feel like all your weight is crushing thru something the last 1-2" drop into the plant.

DGRC is better.

me:
Okay, I'll move over to DGRC for the next form video.

DA - the pigeon toed thing is funny because I'm actually pigeon toed (born with them faced all the way in), so we'll see how far I can get them out. Rear hand on hip was me trying to feel the hip and crease, I'll drop it in now that I feel like I'm getting a better feel for it.

CC - Got it, that helps a lot on understanding where the crush comes in the timing.

That is fine if you are pigeon toed, but stance appears a little too wide to start from. Shift/rock back and forth between your feet and settle them.

Totally, I'll try to get them under me more. Right now as I rock backing and forth they want to spread, and I wonder if that isn't the toes coming in too far and wanting to push the heel out. In the videos you posted they talk about the arch "suction cupping to the ground". Should I be trying to open up and keep the feet down rather than rotating up and back down? The up and back down has help me feel where the weight is, but maybe that is too exaggerated?

I'm also having trouble determining when to shift my weight from rear leg to the front, it doesn't feel natural yet and it seems like I'm doing it too late? If I'm watching https://youtu.be/Q6Oylh4t8G8?t=366 this correctly the weight shift should be in the downswing, but if I time it right it should shift right as I need to start pulling the disc into the power pocket?

In your CC drill, you are going over top/outside your front leg instead of staying inside posture.

Your weight should be pulling your arm/disc. The arm itself doesn't really pull the disc, it's like a string with hinges. The elbow bends as the body starts turning from bracing and the disc should already be at your center without pulling it there.

https://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133319

I'm not clear, do you mean I'm going over the top of my front leg and ending up with my weight on the outside of my foot?

In the best downswing weight shift video (https://youtu.be/0CSHqnYNijw?t=384), he talks about "toss, fall, fall", is that the timing here too? It looks like in the first fall he's shifting his hips back over his lead leg. Am I "backing" into the can crush?

It's starting to make sense in my head, now to get the old body to do it right.

Dingle-Arm, trying to focus on the hip shift to see how it feels. I'm standing pretty upright should I have more bend in my knees? https://gfycat.com/illustrioustalkativeargusfish

Dingle-Arm where I'm trying to hit the nail, and let the elbow lead and the forearm/hammer trebuchet through. https://gfycat.com/belatedapprehensivegreatargus

Crush the can, I was trying to focus on shifting the hips into it and staying inside, but I'm ending up with a very bent front leg. Is that right? https://gfycat.com/readyminorboutu

1. Looks good. Knee bend looks good there, should only bend more as the stance gets wider and more dynamic.

2. Looks dangerous, better be releasing the hammer with that much stank on it. Also looks like you are trying to spin the hammer instead of swinging it or tossing it like horseshoe or ball/hammer on string. Your followthru has a bunch of slack which is where the danger is, followthru should be smooth and pulled out wide and taut from the hammer head. Watch how Paul addresses and swings wide and taut like ball/disc on string all the way around, not trying to spin the disc.

3. The can is crushing/collapsing your knee, instead of crushing the can. Also note how you are on your rear heel instead of toes.

Is youtube easier than gfycat? I just like the loop and speed control features on gfycat being right there, but it seems like youtube can be embedded in the post.

That looks better. Doesn't matter to me youtube or gfycat.

Decide to throw with no walkup, trying to tie the crush the can and dingle arm together. From watching the video I think I'm getting onto the outside of my plant foot, not the inside, and as the session went that became more exaggerated and I finished with my weight in front of my front leg falling forward a bit. Forearm folding into the pocket from rotation was off an on.

Going to play a round tomorrow throwing putters, and possibly mids? Driving without a walk-up.

Not much progress, I played a round of throwing from stationary with only a putter. Putters are flying as far if not a bit farther from a standstill then they were when I did field work with an X-Step. I'm still going through the drills above and trying to figure out how to incorporate them into my work. Here's the latest throwing and crush the can.

Things I think I'm seeing in the videos (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'm bringing the backswing up too high and then firing it down. I'm not pivoting on my front heel most of the time, I'm either grounding it down and twisting around it, or rolling to the outside of the foot.

Crush the Can:

During the crush the can am I getting out too far over the front leg when I shift forward? I'm definitely leaving my rear heel down instead of going up on the toes. During crush the can am I supposed to be crushing so that I plant on the inside of my front foot (so weight over the arch of my foot)?

The drill from that gif really helped me grasp pushing off my rear foot into the plant. In my throwing session this morning it felt like I was doing a better job of keeping my weight inside my front plant and rotating on my heel. I'm still having a tendency to bring the backswing up too high to set down into my plant, and then I pull through on a curve going high at the back, low in front of my belly on the swing through, and then up as I release causing me to nose up the disc. Should I be trying to drive my elbow out in front more, I'm thinking that fold the forearm in towards my peck more instead of dragging through my belly area? Anything else?

Need to get your rear arm forward in front of your body. Leverage the front arm from the rear arm pushing forward on it.

Working on getting my trailing arm up, I thought it would be easy but it continues to drop down like I'm trying to rub my belly for some reason. Still dealing with a lot of nose up, it's much easier to see when I can get out into the field and actually let the discs fly instead of throwing them into a net 15 feet away. Then I end up compensating by swinging my body low which doesn't feel right. I'll see if I can pull some of the footage and post it.

So here's two examples from last night. The first one is the worst offender as far as coming out nose up, but most of the throws did to some degree or another. In both I'm trying to keep my trailing arm in more, but to be honest these were probably the 2 best examples of that from the night. It was a mixed bag as far as me keeping the arm up.

Watching the video, I think I'm starting with my weight inside but then as I come across I'm not staying upright and my weight is going past my brace, or maybe I'm not staying behind it at all?

Yeah you are tipping/folding over your front leg, instead of moving in dynamic center/upright.
Finish with your feet close together and head stacked upright on front foot.
Will help you a lot to just swing around in a windmill without throwing, feel how to stay upright centered between your feet.

Swing upward, throw Comets, not drivers.
