The quintessential "Typical" course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 9, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Large variety of shot shapes, anhyzer, hyzer, straight on, short, and medium, uphill, and down hill. About as much variety as a par 3 course could have.
You are likely to have at least one ace run while you are out there.
Good number of benches spread about the course for breaks.
Multiple pin placements changed about monthly offer some variety.
As long as you aren't there at 5pm on a sunny afternoon, you can get a full round in an hour.

Cons:

It is decent/typical, that is about it. I don't think there is really anything that will separate this course from anything else you've ever played.
It can be very, very busy on a nice Saturday/Sunday afternoon.

Other Thoughts:

It is a very average course. Nothing spectacular, nothing bad.

Enjoyable Short Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Arrowhead Park is located in the lower half of Wilmington . It is a multi use park that has a nice bathroom at the end of a spacious parking lot . Even though it is further away from the start of the course , you may want to park close to the bathrooms . The long walk back will take you by it , and you can drop your bag in the car if you have to use it . The course starts on top of a large hill with a path on your left as you enter the parking lot .
The Equipment -There is a nice kiosk greeting you at the top of the hill with a map of the course . The tee pads have what look like plastic carton squares centered in a wood frame and have sand based under the cartons . Large enough , they seem to do the job . The tee signs are nice and informative . Unfortunately , ones are missing on 13,15,16 ,17 ,and 18 . The baskets are yellow banded Discatchers & there are little wood Next Tee signs w/# to help navigate you . Navigation is close to seamless here . There are trash cans and benches that the tee pads .
The Landscape , Climbing up a good sized hill to the beginning of the course should tell you all you need to know . For being so close to the beach , this course has some elevation . The course is set up more woods style . Lots of tighter tree lined fairways and tunnel shots . The fairways are sand based with pine needles on top . This course eventually goes clockwise around the park . It seems well cared for and spots mowed and branches trimmed .
Course Appearance/Atmosphere . Not a nature walk by any means , and you are traveling at a good pace because the holes are short , but if you sit at one or more of the abundance of benches here , you will notice that the woods area is nice to look at . There is a nice bridge that you cross over to travel the last few holes and cross over to go back to your car . Most of this course is in the shade .
The Highlights - The holes are short and challenging holes are scarce here , but it doesn't take away from the fun of throwing a quick round . #6 was a 266' downhill right to left tunnel shot , #16 was an over the hill drive to the basket tucked in on the right . #17 was a left to right fade into a tight tunnel with some overgrwth on the sides .
Signature Hole - My favorite hole was #18 . It runs to the left at the end through a tight tunnel . It's recoverable for a par if you hit a tree , but you will have accomplished something with a birdie .
Disc Risk - Very low . The holes are short and there are only 1 or 2 blind shots . Overgrowth is only close to a couple of fairways , and it's not deep .
The Time - It took me about 45 minutes to play the course. A foursome will get through in 1 1/2 hours . . Add at least 5 minutes to get back to the parking lot .
The Fun Factor here is high , as are the moods of the disc golfers that were here when I was . The locals are very friendly .
The course is also friendly . Ace friendly , birdie friendly ,,, These always put people in a good mood .

Cons:

#1 Spacing -There were a couple of places where a stray fairway throw could wind up on another fairway . Please yell Fore on errant drives .
#2 Challenge - I brought my whole bag just in case , but you might be able to get away with a couple of midranges and a putter here . This is going to be ace runs and birdie fests for the seasoned players .
#3 Variety - many holes here will remind you of holes you just played . Short technical tunnel shot might be repetitive for some .

Other Thoughts:

There is always need for an 18 holes course in areas to introduce players to the game , have players hone their skills in order to tackle bigger and better courses , or just a filler course for players to get in a " quick 18 " or try out some new discs . Arrowhead does all of this . Everyone remembers their first ace , or their first round shooting under par . Arrowhead can be that course . I talked to one of the locals that was playing a couple of holes behind me during my round . He says that even though the course is not that old , Something is modified or added every other year . I hope the missing signs in the back of the course are replaced , and vandalism or theft doesn't become a pattern here . There were at least 15 people on the course at any time during my round , and it was a Friday afternoon , which makes this a popular destination .
My Recommendation - A nice short technical course that's hills will give you a little workout , it's a great intro course , great for newbies , dates , families , school kids nearby , and the locals . More of a practice course for intermediates on up , but still okay . Kind of out of the way for the traveler , unless he has business in Wilmington . Vacationers looking for something to do after already spending time on the beach and touring the battleship North Carolina can enjoy a round or 2 .
Course Collectors will like the fact that it's a fast 18 holes and almost a straight line down to a brewery with a course on it and Joe Eakes . If you go into this park with lowered expectations , I think you will have an enjoyable round . Try This One Out If In Wilmington !!

Fun hole layouts through the woods. Not heavily wooded, just enough to add some spice. Some up and down hill holes, not many on the sides of hills. Very open and easy to locate errant shots.

Cons:

Lots of tee markers missing, finding the baskets can be a bit challenging on a few holes.

Short and Sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This was a really fun little course to play and just about anyone can have success here. I was on vacation with my family and it was because of this course that my dad fell in love with disc golf.

-This course was easy to locate, there was plenty of parking and in the summer months it was almost totally shaded.

- Navagation was pretty seamless, and after one round you should have no issue.

- Tons of Ace runs

-Everything is birdiable (is that a word?)

- Quick play, you can get through this course in 30-45 mins in most cases.

-Great putting practice and practice for everything within 100-150 feet.

Cons:

If you are looking for a challenge and you play regularly, this is not the course for you.
Not a ton of length and diversity

Other Thoughts:

You can probably leave the big bag at home. If you are an experienced player you wont need more than a putter, a few kids and maybe one fairway driver.

This course was clearly designed to grow the sport of Disc Golf and for that reason I gave it a 3.5. Do not avoid this course because of its rating. This was really fun and a definite change of pace. A great summer course that can be played before you are baking in the sun.

Decent beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

In a recent trip to the beach, I played Arrowhead, Trinity, and Joe Eakes. Joe Eakes is the best of the three (and Castle Hayne is better still), but Arrowhead (and Trinity) really are not designed with the serious player in mind. Like Trinity, which is a fun little 9-hole pitch and putt, you won't need more than a putter at Arrowhead. (You might use a mid or fairway driver on a hole or two, depending on your arm.) 13 of the 18 holes are under 200 feet and the longest on the course is 266. The rough isn't bad, for the most part, and the navigation is simple. This is a good course to introduce a beginner to the game or practice upshots. If you're looking for more serious golf, try Castle Hayne or Joe Eakes. If you're looking for the best intro course or a higher fun factor, try Trinity DGC at Good Hops Brewery. But for something in between -- a beginner course with a little elevation, a few holes over 200 feet (which Trinity lacks), and a full 18 holes -- Arrowhead works.

+ Decent elevation, considering it's near the coast.

+ Good mix of hyzer, anhyzer, and straight holes.

+ Good baskets.

+ Good signage with hole yardage and info; also intuitive navigation.

+ Nice bathrooms, a covered picnic area, and brand new playground. I took my kids here and it's certainly a kid-friendly course.

Cons:

Intermediate, advanced, and pro-level players will find this course rather elementary. But again, I think it was designed with the beginner in mind. Two other courses in the area, as of 2016, cater to more serious players.

- Nothing for big arms. Very short, not very challenging.

- The rubber tees were not always level, and sometimes sand covered portions of them, but being such a short course, you don't need much of a run-up.

- The mosquitos are legit here. Wear bug spray.

Other Thoughts:

Nice course for beginners and course explorers. Check it out!

Good beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Some have complained about the course being short, but I think the baskets are great for beginners - easy to see and hole in ones are very achievable. Area can be a bit woodsy, but narrow enough to create a good challenge for more experienced players. Undergrowth isn't bad, trash cans at all tees, and trail is very well marked.

Cons:

Course currently under construction, only played to basket 9. Course likely too short for more experienced players, most baskets are less than 200ft.

Other Thoughts:

There is a creek that you can't see just beyond the trees next to the course, be careful when you decide to throw it as hard as you can.

Other Thoughts:

I was in the Wilmington area for a vacation and had time to play this course once. Its a fun challenging short course. I used a putter off the tee with no run up on all but 3 holes which I used a mid range with no run up. For being as short as it is it still offered plenty of challenge. Fairways were well thought out and offered plenty of variety of left to right, right to left, uphill, downhill holes. The course was crowded on a Tuesday morning in March so be prepared for plenty off traffic on weekends and warmer months. But the locals were very nice and courteous to us. I definitely recommend this course if you are in the area.

What it lacks in size, it makes up for in enjoyment! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is pretty fun to play, considering how short it is. Usually courses of this length are reserved for one time play only, but Arrowhead kept drawing me back.

First off, if you're looking for any elevation changes at all in a course while you're near the beach, this is the course for you. The front nine incorporates elevation, sometimes rather large, in the majority of the holes. The back nine is a little more flat.

Counting holes that test your left/right abilities, it seems fairly balanced, although the two big downhill shots are both RHBH.

You have a few water hazards to deal with on a few holes, namely 18, although you'll find it takes a fairly erratic shot to end up there.

Every hole on the front 9 is what I would call wooded. The back 9 is a decent mixture of open and wooded, but the course lacks a truly open big arm shot.

For being at the beach, the course allows you to play in almost any weather due to the course's ability to wick away water. You won't have to tromp through swampland after a downpour.

The signs are well made and navigation shouldn't be much of an issue at all. There were even trashcans on the course.

To be a wooded course, there is hardly any underbrush. You won't have very many chances to lose a disc, so you shouldn't feel bad at running at those aces, which could come in bunches on this course.(In fact my brother hit an ace on 5 during our rounds there).

Cons:

The course is short. It's perfectly acceptable to throw a putter on nearly every hole on the front nine and even nearly half of the back, although you might opt for a fairway driver. In this aspect, it doesn't challenge the big arm players in a way I look for when objectively rating a course.

A few holes on the back 9 play out into an open field which may or may not be used by the general public. Something to keep in mind when throwing there.

I don't recall any seating available, but the terrain would be difficult in many places to put any. Additionally, the course should only take an hour to play so you won't really need any in the first place.

Outside of the overall ease of difficulty to the whole course, I can't think of very many other cons. The layout dictates a lot of my rating and it just lacks that challenge I'm looking for. The layout takes advantage of the land available, but there simply isn't enough land to create a championship level course.

Other Thoughts:

Don't hesitate to stop and play Arrowhead if you're in the area. At the very least, the park is well maintained, you're bound to have a fun experience, some ace runs and you shouldn't lose a disc. Use it to warm up your Putt and Approach game before tackling Castle Hayne.

A joy to play 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Well marked signage, tee boxes and baskets
-Well groomed course with out a major amount of under growth to swallow up discs
-Nice variety in lines needed to take to each basket
-Really gives your mids and P&A's a workout. On occasion you may disc down with a FD for a forehand or go for it with something like a drone or zone

Cons:

Strangely I have no major or minor issues to address, this may change with a few more runs on the course

Other Thoughts:

This course was a great time. I have been restricting myself to only mids and putters and this course delivers. A lot of short holes that prove easy ace runs with a few that reward those to take chances. I parked quite a few that lead to birdies first time out.

The wind is minimal once you get in the trees and I enjoyed warming up in the field beforehand lobbing at basket 13 . I would play again and suggest to others to give it a chance.

Quick Fun Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 8, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Short, wooded course that wouldn't be out of place in more westerly parts of the state. There's tons of trees and whole the fairways aren't overly tight, any inaccuracy will result in hitting a trunk of some kind. The biggest danger comes from all the early gaps. There are a lot of them. I couldn't put an exact number on the amount of tees that sit with a pair of trees just in front but they would not fit on one hand. I'd say that the more interesting and challenging holes are concentrated in the front nine. Mostly, this is because of the elevation changes on that part of the course. A few of the holes (4,6,7) boast some seriously vertical fairways. Good stuff.

I also didn't find any of the fairways to be lacking in lines of attack. On a few occasions, there are multiple flight paths, in particular the uphill on 6, where there is a long hyzer route and narrow straight path that finishes right. Open shots are also rare but 16 provides a nice long route through the power corridor. Most of the holes support one flight path and typically, it's exacting but not too demanding. The majority are simple doglegs with some straight approaches. Solid if not overly exciting.

I wouldn't describe this course as beginner-friendly but it's not beginner-unfriendly either. There are some things that should frustrate them, but with the easy distances involved and the low amount of underbrush, they should be able to get out of trouble. Advanced players might be bored somewhat but they shouldn't be coming here looking for a destination course. I would say that the ideal audience for this course is the intermediate player without a lot of time on their hands. It plays quickly. A lot quicker than either of the other two courses in the county and it's proximity to downtown Wilmington means that many players are likely in out of here on a regular basis. As a play-it-all-the-time course it fits the bill and when you combine the easy navigation, the ability to start on 10, (or 13 if you have the map) there is no reason not to play it if you are in the area for the other two courses.

Cons:

The holes are short. Thirteen of them are under two-hundred feet. A wooded course like this isn't required to feature monster distances but when their this short, it's too easy to recover for par even when missing the drive and ending up on the trees. So it's not an ideal course for experienced players. And it's not ideal for beginners as the lines are bit too tight for them. I'm talking a lot about what it isn't but that's probably the only thing wrong that I see. It's not a destination. It's not a challenge. It's not memorable or spectacular in any way. There are no signature holes. For what it is, a quick, relatively easy wooded course, (in an area without any other) it actually succeeds pretty well.

Other Thoughts:

It's about a three-minute drive off the route to Joe Eakes. It takes less than forty minutes to play. It has some nice lines and if you aren't expecting another Castle Hayne, you won't be disappointed. It's not a destination course: it's an on-the-way course. And thankfully, this one is very much on-the-way.

Very short, so it tests your short game well. A good number of ace runs. Decently designed for the land. Good signage, nice to have trash cans at every hole for the assholes that decide to drop their beer cans while playing.

Cons:

Could use a few trees taken out to make the fairways consistent with the lengths. Fun to have short holes, but this ends up being more of a putting round than a real throw down.

Other Thoughts:

For a beginner, this course would be great if they could avoid the trees.

Not bad... 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 30, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Short. Perfect for a quick getaway from the office during a lunch break. Two can easily play a round in under 45 minutes. Wham, bam, thank-you-ma'am.

- Location. It's set pretty far back in Monkey Junction, but because of it's propinquity to College Road it makes for a nice in-between course on the travel from Castle Hayne to Joe Eakes if one were so inclined to play all three Wilmington courses over a weekend. (P.S. "Propinquity" means closeness.)

- Well marked. Navigating the course is easy. However, those new to the course will probably wonder where to begin. First hole is straight up the first hill you see driving in to the entrance to the park. Chances are you saw a basket on your drive up. That was #2. #1 tee is to the right of that.

- Lots of trash cans that are emptied regularly. And they are bright! If you're not sure where the next hole is, look for the closest glare from the NC sun. One on every tee box.

- Baskets are fairly forgiving. Tee boxes aren't bad too awful terrible, but you can read about that in the cons.

- Provides some nice elevation changes in spite of its proximity to the beach.

- Not too much traffic on the course. Since this course is generally considered the bronze-medal winner in Wilmington (there's only three courses), most people prefer to play Castle Hayne or Joe Eakes in Kure Beach. Plus, with the course being a short one the wait times for groups in front are pretty short.

- Park itself offers great amenities: new shelter (with clean restrooms and a grill), basketball/tennis courts, ultimate/soccer/kickball field, and playground for the kiddies. (No reservations required to use the shelter either. First come, first served.)

Cons:

- VERY wooded. Only on a couple holes are you able to grip it 'n rip it. No matter how good you are, you WILL probably hit more trees than you're accustomed to or comfortable with when playing this course. Accept it and send frustration packing.

- All par threes. I know I said that was a pro, but it'd be nice to have a few holes to draw out the game. But hey, I was able to play 27 holes on my lunch break the other day, so if you value quantity over quality this is a good thing too. Beggars can't be choosers.

- No benches on tee boxes....but then, it's a short course.

- Tee boxes. They're plastic and can be really slippery when wet. Also, some are really uneven, especially #9. Careful on the run-up as erosion on that hole could easily cause you to slip off the back and sideline you with a sprained ankle.

- No topless Hooters girls frolicking along the #8 fairway.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, Arrowhead is not a "bad" course by any means, but compared to The Castle and Joe Eakes it's junior varsity. The length is optimal for beginners and kids, but being so heavily wooded it could easily frustrate both. However, if you're looking for a quick round to sharpen your short game and technical skills, you could do a lot worse than Arrowhead. It's worth a look for anyone addicted to the game.

Pros:

This is the course I take beginners to. It is short but tight, so I enjoy it also as a change of pace from playing The Castle most of the time.

This area is typically below or at sea level meaning it is really flat around here. Arrowhead is the only course with any real elevation to practice on.

The course also allows for some neat shots you do not get anywhere else nearby. Try throwing an over head over all the trees off the 4th tee. That shot does not exist anywhere else nearby. Down hill over trees.

My only ace was on this course with a comet. I play a lot of ace runs here which I do not do anywhere else.

The park around the course is nice and has field for practicing before you play.

Cons:

Really short, no holes to air the disc out on.

Needs a little pruning on a few holes. Not to take away the teeth of the course but just to clean up the lines.

no benches.

no practice basket.

Other Thoughts:

Watch for snakes I have seen a couple at this course. If you go when no one is on the play ground try climbing the hill behind it and throwing a shot over the field and play to the basket at 14. Makes for a really fun 19th hole. Just make sure no kids are on the play ground.
