Job well done Alvin Parks & Rec

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

The amenities you want: long grippy concrete tees + brick extension behind. New Discatchers. Course map. Practice basket. Tee signs at each pad (though lacking in hole detail). Next tee marking on the basket.
Great course flow. Many holes were short walks from basket to tee while not feeling congested or overlapped.
Well defined fairways- rough is rough but open and fair lines to attack holes.
High fun factor.

Cons:

Very poor drainage after rain. Sticky shoe-sucking mud is the name of the game after precipitation.
Low overall difficulty. Light to moderate line shaping is required to navigate the brush defined fairways and par 4's are on the soft to easy end of the spectrum.
Hole 17 does not have a line to the basket besides a massive LBH/ RHFH hyzer. Besides this hole design is good.

Other Thoughts:

Briscoe Park is nothing short of a very good disc golf course set in a sprawling multi use park. Amenities installed from day 1 are among the top caliber you will see, especially for a course tailored more to the casual-intermediate player.
Disc golf is set in a mostly dedicated area of the part where only moderately to significantly errant shots will find the bike path that borders and winds through the course. The play is lightly to moderately challenging across the board with thick brush and trees forming defined but quite fair fairways. I found myself throwing a mix of left, right and straight shots with most in the 240-350 range. The course reminded me of a less punishing Oak Meadow in Cypress.
Overall the play was quite enjoyable and would recommend to anyone in the area; albeit heading the repeated caution of avoiding after rain.

Solid course which should improve with time 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 12, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent tee boxes.
Signage is good overall. Nice course map at start of course.
18 full holes. Putting basket near the first tee to warm up. Large areas near the start to warm up.
Enough trees and brush to keep things interesting.
Only one true water hazard in play.
Fully lit course. Fun design overall.
A really nice addition to the area.

Cons:

When it rains hard it gets muddy. The ditch going in front of the basket on hole one can also fill up with water and become a true hazard.
They need to have regular work days to keep the tree areas clear of brush on the ground. The trees aren't a problem. It is the build up of brush around them that makes it hard to find discs and hard to even get to them at times. The pandemic has made work days hard to have of course.
Watch out for poison ivy, especially in the summer.

Other Thoughts:

This course is still currently in its first year of being open. If upkeep is good, it should grow in well over time. They just need to watch out for the overgrowth around the trees. They did some trimming around certain tree areas and holes. You still need to bring a flashlight at night if you are going to throw it into the bushes and trees.

Pros:

Good tee boxes and baskets. Good mix of straight, left, right holes. A lot of room for scoring well when you're accurate. (And the converse :) )

Park is nicely maintained for the most part, although at times the grass and weeds can get tall.

Cons:

A lot of thick "rough". Many, many clumps of trees and brush to avoid, a fair amount of them with poison ivy and/or thorns. And pretty much impossible to throw out of when you hit them. One miss of the fairway and it can be impossible to recover. I feel like if most of this underbrush was removed, still leaving the trees, it would be a much nicer course to play.

Also, avoid this course after rain. It's the muddiest course I've ever played. When we do play at those times, we're constantly looking for places to scrapes the mud off.

Signs *look* nice, but IMO are not real helpful. It appears that each hole's sign was just copied out of the overall course map, showing its orientation from the start/parking lot, not from the current tee. I think they should be remade to be oriented from where they're placed, and from tee to basket.

Other Thoughts:

I personally haven't tried night play; see above comments about the underbrush. It seems like any miss of the fairway at night would be goodbye to that disc.

Wind is kind-of interesting. There are so many tunnels and sheltered areas that you can get winds in multiple directions even on a single hole.

If you live in the Friendswood/Alvin/West League City area, it's a really accessible location. Closest course to where I live, and it's a good 18.

Pros:

Let me be clear from the get go that the actual quality of the disc golf is a bit below the 4.0 rating I gave the course, but this course cannot be evaluated without giving credit to its unique amenity. For any unfamiliar, the Briscoe Park course in Alvin is FULLY LIT AT NIGHT (until 10:30) FOR NIGHT PLAY.

With that said:

-Course has done a very nice job of making the best of flat, wooded land. The design largely takes you through fairways and small meadows carved out of the wooded area on the edge of the park. While not the most picturesque area, holes do feel fair and thoughtful.

-Course strikes a balance between accessibility and challenge. Generally speaking there are not a ton of longer holes, and the longer ones that are there are very generous with their designated pars, but this was meant to be a course that would be accessible to new players.

-That said, the City of Alvin has invested significant resources related to finances, time, and manpower with the goal of making this an amenity to residents and a draw to non-locals. This is a course to always be on your best behavior at. Not sure if this counts as a pro, but it is very important.

-The course has clear tee signs (mostly), HUGE teeboxes (a personal favorite), and high quality baskets.

-The city has laid down grass seed in most fairways which will hopefully change the terrain from a bit muddy to something more pleasant over time.

-Have I mentioned it is a FULLY LIT DISC GOLF COURSE!? Lights are sufficiently bright, well placed, and should mostly cover even errant shots. I was moderately stunned by how well I was able to see even at full dark.

Cons:

The cons I will list are current as of January 8, 2020, and many will likely be addressed. I will try to update if I see some of these taken care of.

-Currently lacks benches and trash cans.

-There are a handful of places that the holes cross the walking path, which is moderately well used by park goers. I could see this being a particular challenge at times when it is dark.

-The shule is thorny and much more dark than the rest of the course. It could be very easy to lose discs.

-I haven't played after rain, but it looks like it could get pretty swampy, and you have to cross a few drainage ditches at points. Right now there are not convenient bridges for all the drainage ditches if they fill up with water/mud.

Other Thoughts:

I'l be playing there several more times in the near future and some of these might change, but here is my current list of top suggestions:

1) Bring glow discs. They will get some glow effect when they fly into the denser shule, and the whitish glow plastic shows up nicely in the dark under the lights.

2) Bring a flashlight. I didn't need one, but I can see it being helpful. I have a feeling that the course will get backed up at night with people looking for lost discs. Try not to be that guy/gal!

3) Pay attention to the tee signs when they tell you where the next teebox is. There are a handful of times it isn't obvious.

4) If possible, play it first in daylight. A couple of baskets are blind. A few teeboxes are tough to find. A few ditches have specific spots that are better to cross. All of these things are easier to navigate for the first time when it is fully daylight.

5) FINAL BIG RECOMMENDATION! Support Alvin's local businesses and show the city that there investment was worthwhile. There are lots of great spots to enjoy in town, but I personally love and recommend Gordon Street Tavern. It has local beers, a new patio, and surprisingly great food. A night round at Briscoe followed by a few rounds at Gordon Street sounds like just about a perfect night to me.

Enjoy and use responsibly!
