Camp Gnarl 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

~Resort like camp setting, amazing property
~Parking lot at Hole 1, course loops back to the start
~Wonderful mix of golf holes
~Great use of elevation
~Full bag of shots required
~Challenging & fun with great potential

Cons:

~Course still needs worked in, very rough ground surfaces in the woods
~Half of the course has tire mounted home made looking baskets
~Turf and natural tees, a course of this caliber needs concrete
~Low lying areas are soggy and murky
~Benches and trash cans along a few holes would be helpful

Other Thoughts:

Played a 19 hole layout from the white tees for a recent C-Tier Tournament. Initial impressions were very positive. The property is expansive, clean, and beautiful. The course starts near the main dining & office facility plays the first 6 holes in a traditionally open layout with elevation then dives into the woods with a few more open holes spread throughout to complete the current layout.

Holes 1 thru 9 are in great shape and suit my preferred course style. They take advantage or rolling elevations and mature trees with some thick rough in spots. The remainder of the layout has many good holes and a handful of areas that still need a lot of ground work to get up to speed with the first half. Currently the course is good, with time and development it could become really good to great.

Replacing the tire mounted baskets, and installation of concrete tees along with some waste receptacles and benches could catapult the condition of this course.

The design is imaginative and every hole is unique. Course flows well and with three sets of tees can cater to most skill levels. The whites that I played are definitely geared toward more experienced players with 300' distance and accuracy.
Couple this course with the nearby Grassman at West Branch State Park, and any golfer would have plenty of fun playing in the woods.

Close to Being A Destination Course for Ohio Disc Golfers! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 8, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Camp Carl is a beautiful, private property with hundreds of acres of stunning hills and woodlands! Perfect setting for a top tier disc golf course.

+ Three sets of uniquely places tees for anyone from a pure beginner to a seasoned veteran. The course will challenge just about everyone that plays.

+ Very good mix of distances, elevation, tree coverage, etc. You start off with several open holes, then go into the woods for even more fun!

+ Makes an 18 hole loop right back to where you started .

+ Front 9 has Patriot baskets, and I'm pretty sure they'll be coming for the back 9 soon.

+ Just about every hole is really well designed, but the stretch from 9-14 is fantastic. #9 is off an elevated tee over the lake with a tricky pin position on a slope. #11 is one of the best holes I've played, and feels more like a mountain course in the Rockies rather than a summer camp in Ohio. It's 340' to the pin, but you're so high up you can easily throw it 500' if you wanted to. 12-13 are closed due to a bridge issue, but those holes are also incredible from what I saw.

+ Nice and secluded, with the back 9 being the most secluded in the back of the property.

+ You can easily camp out over at West Branch SP and play all 45 holes in the area (The Grassman, Campground Course, Camp Carl).

+ Favorite Hole: 11
+ Favorite Hole Honorable Mentions: 1, 9, 17

Cons:

- No concrete tees yet, just some bumpy turf that isn't the best thing for grip.

- Back 9 has homemade baskets instead of the Patriots on the front side. The baskets aren't terrible, but aren't really the best.

- Only open for play on the weekends, unless you book a tee time with the camp during weekdays. No guarantees they grant you permission during the week due to activities and such.

- Navigation is pretty straight forward, but make sure you bring a map on your phone just in case you run into an issue.

- Least Favorite Hole: 4

Other Thoughts:

Camp Carl is on track to become one of the premier courses of Ohio. There's a lot to like about this place, and it will only get better as improvements are made.

Side note: Not sure whether I'm happy or upset for hitting the basket on #9. I was so close to my first ever ace (8+ years playing) but missed the chains by a few inches.
