Heavily Wooded, Immensely Humbling

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 3, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Large, well maintained, public park course in Murray, KY. The entire park complex is well taken care of, but the course itself is meticulously maintained by locals who love the sport and the course. Originally an 18 Hole HB Clark design, the club has expanded the course to a total of 27 holes with 36 baskets offering a multitude of layout options. This heavily wooded course offers a bit of everything line shaping wise so expect to utilize a lot of different plastic.

AMENITIES: Central Park offers ample parking, multiple pavilions, bathrooms, a pool facility, sports fields, hiking and biking trails, and some closed but kind of scenic viewing (a couple creeks, some elevation, and several nice bridges). Most of the amenities are out of sight/out of mind though while playing deep in the heavily wooded sections of the course until you emerge on some of the holes that push the boundaries.

TEES/SIGNAGE/BASKETS: Ample sized textured concrete tees throughout. Course map sign is a little on the older sign but still contains most relevant information. Tee signs show both locations and distances for both basket locations (which were both in place when I played) allowing me to choose which layout I wanted to play. Course has both Red and Yellow baskets (Innova discatchers) in great shape and caught well. Course could use some better directional signage for navigation but it's only a minor knock.

DESIGN: Heavily wooded with many low ceiling late turning holes with mild to moderate elevation changes. The short pin locations off a bit more variety in shot shapes while being easier to see from the tee and access more easily without getting punished. The reds heavily favor the RHFH shot shape with many having a slight left curving start before a hard right finish. As a LHBH player I found a lot of the angles off the tee forcing me to throw choppy anhyzer angles with very overstable discs quite often. Not a knock on the design, just a very noticeable theme throughout. I do enjoy that you can choose your own difficulty and experience. You can break the 27 holes up into various 9 or 18 hole layouts and alternate between yellow or red as you wish.

EXTRAS: While I wouldn't exactly say this course excels at natural beauty for being a city park, the thick heavily wooded nature of the course does evoke a pretty calm and enjoyable feel that most public park courses don't normally. As noted above, the customizable nature of this course to suit your own experience is a great addition and makes this course able to be enjoyed by all types of skill levels. Most of the underbrush areas were cleaned up and well kept. It is winter time so that helps, but had very little trouble finding discs or dealing with thorn bushes.

Cons:

BUSY PARK: There are a few holes of note that travel very closely to high traffic areas when you pop out of the woods for a moment. Hole 3 had some cars parked near the pavilion. There was a hole that ran directly next to the batting cages which were in use by some kids practicing hitting. There is a gated in pool area that comes into play on hole 10 I believe. The dog park makes Hole 17 kind of skinny and awkward if there are a lot of people there. Multiple hiking and biking trails cut throughout the course and some flow with fairways and around blind corners. There were several joggers when I played that were completely
oblivious to the disc golf part of their jogging trail.

REDUNDANCY: Despite all the added holes and extra pin locations, this course can feel extremely redundant. As I've mentioned before, the design very much favors the RHFH and if you don't have that shot in your arsenal, and if you don't particularly enjoy heavily wooded golf, this course can possibly not be a fun experience for you. It's not so much a knock against the course as it is a warning to particular types of players who might want to know what they are in for before planning a trip here.

NAVIGATION/PLAY: This is subjective but even using U-Disc this course was extremely difficult to navigate on the first play through. There were so many layout options to choose from, so many baskets, so many holes, and we were kind of holding up the GPS to navigate around. This course plays through much better the second time around. The first time will feel awkward to some as you don't really know where to land the discs, what the best approach angle is, or what the troubles are that you can't see from the tee. The course is MUCH better in subsequent playthroughs once you have a bit of familiarity.

SOGGY: Course is well beaten in and most of the trails become very slick and mushy after significant rain or snowfall. Footing can be very tricky, especially on the slanted fairways. I can see this course being a monster after a big rain, but I can also see the summer sun and heat baking the trails in the summer and making for all kinds of skippy ground play.

Other Thoughts:

A really well executed course with great additions and well maintained by the local club. A super challenging yet fun playthrough. This course really does not allow you to just step up to the tee and let it fly. It forces you to carefully select a line, pick the right disc, and execute. Every birdie is right there, but it demands excellence and doesn't apologize for punishing your mistakes. Just ever so slightly below being a destination course for me. I would however drive a few hours to play a tournament here or pair it with others in the area on a road trip through the area for sure.

Great Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 13, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course, well maintained, 27holes 36 different baskets. The original 18 have been redesigned. There are red and yellow baskets on many holes. Hole 13 has two different tee pads to the same basket. Good variety of shots good use of elevation. Holes 2, 5, 11, 16,17 have only one basket. On the Red layout Holes 6,9,14,23,24,27 are Par 4s. On the yellow layout 6,7,9,10,14,19,20,21,22,23,24,27 are par 4s. 21 Is my favorite hole long and tough but beatiful trees line the fairway. Hole 25 yellow (long basket plays across creek stunning hole but a challenging 3. Baskets were recently updated with the powder coat paint and new chains. New tee signs.

Cons:

Could use a little trimming on the front 18 in some areas. Hole 3 at lunch time has cars parked right in the corner next to the pavilion and your disc flight could hit a car if not aimed correctly. The Dog park cramps the line on 17 IMO I would like to see a redesign and moving this basket elsewhere.
Watch for hikers and bike riders on some of the trails that intertwine with the course many are unaware of the DGC and sit in the fairways and on the bridges.

Other Thoughts:

Challenging but very fun course.
Hole 19 yellow has a tree with a long arm over the creek would be fun to have a hanging basket there imo.
The original 18 will warm you up for the new 18. Plan to stay and play all 36 for a fun DG day!

Big Improvement 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The park has recently added 9 more holes and they are doozies, each with a red (short placement) basket and with a yellow (long Placement) basket. On top of an already entertaining course, these holes are extremely challenging and almost entirely wooded. The shots are well balanced for lefties and righties, including the old holes. I can now play this course with 27 holes in one visit, not to mention the additional 9 placements on the new holes. I wish I lived closer to this course.

Cons:

If you don't like wooded courses, this course would not be for you. There are only a handful of holes that let you throw off the pad without a tree near the fairway.

This course has become excellent in 2017 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I played this course last year and it was a solid 3.5. They have added 9 tees and 18 more baskets to this course. First the front 18 are decent holes 4-6 let you throw on some open areas but mostly these are wooded holes that are semi demanding that you hit your line. The new back nine is a whole new beast that is probably the most advanced 9 holes you will find in this area. Every hole has the potential to make your score look real bad. The baskets for A and B placements are red and yellow and permanent. So you can go to one place and pretty much play two 18 hole rounds. This is my favorite course in the area now replacing union city.

Cons:

Not really to beginner friendly.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 9 ends right at hole 19 but if you play the course in order you will walk across the street to play 10 then have to walk from 18 back across the street to pretty much 9's basket to 19 tee pad. They should change holes 10-18 to 1-9 then change holes 1-9 to 10-18 and this course would flow much better.

Alternate basket locations reduce rating 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete pads, little ground foliage, baskets, nice lines (for original basket locations)

Cons:

Alternate basket locations!, no course map at kiosk, hole signs do not indicate distance or even location for alternate baskets and you can not see most of the baskets from the tee pad, navigation to next tee pad

Other Thoughts:

Would get a better rating if I would have played with the pins set at the standard locations. The alternate basket locations do not flow well at all with the course and consist of either huge backhand or forehand hyzers that will still not get you in the circle. You can only do so much with an air shot without trying to throw crazy rollers on each hole to get enough left/right. Rest of the course is great but many of those alternate locations are garbage IMO.

Good Challenge/ Great Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a good layout in a really great multipurpose park. The front 9 played you in and out of the woods, up and down and also along open grassy areas. Pin placement often meant different approach shots were needed so it kept things interesting.

Cons:

Par might be a challenge for beginners, but don't be discouraged. This course gives you enough room to shoot and will allow your game to improve.

Sometimes coming out of the woods you forget that others might be using the park. Keep an eye out for others on 3 (pavilion/kid park), 11 (pool) and 17 (dog park).

Other Thoughts:

Plays better the second time when you have a better idea where to throw.

I was there in the heat of the summer and the park was well used, but the course still flowed nicely and the woods were very passible - not too hard to find an errant disc!

nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very nice course, bring all the shots you know, some of the holes really makes a player think about their shot. Lots of left to right holes, also several holes with birdie opportunities. Plenty of parking with a well used practice basket. Tees are long and trippy and signs at the pad show the next tee.

Cons:

Some of the trails can become slick during and after a rain. The last day we played footing on some holes was tricky because of all the acorns falling but this won't be a problem during the rest of the season. Hole 3 could be a problem because of ppl being at the pavilion also on 17 you have to play around the dog park.

Other Thoughts:

Great course, with plenty of challenges but also several chances for birdies.

Thru the Woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 5, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

1. The park itself was a nice place. Lots of trees and the paths that cut through the course were very nice.

2. The designer did a very good job of using the property to make this course.

3. The front side is moderately wooded seemed to be the easier side to score for me.

4. The Back side was VERY wooded with very small windows to play into. I found this 9 to be a great challenge.

5. The tee pads were in nice shape and allowed for long run-ups.

6. The signs on each hole were pretty accurate descriptions of the holes.

7. I found that this course required a wide array of shots. Unfortunately I was missing a few of them. :)

8. Parking and the practice putting area were nice as well.

9. This course will make you think. I felt that several of the holes begged you to bite off too much while playing safe was the better option.

Cons:

1. Finding the next tee was a problem on a couple of holes.

2. We had problems with a few kids on the course and some fans for the ballparks that are very close to some holes on the front 9.

Other Thoughts:

This was my first time playing a course that I would consider to be HEAVILY wooded. While this course in no way suites my game, I must admit that I really enjoyed playing it. Only 1 hole was I able to get on the tee and just let it fly. Every other hole, I was trying to find the right line and evaluating the risks vs the rewards of different shots. Playing this course will greatly strengthen the technical aspects of my game. I look forward to a return visit in the near future.

Better than rated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

A nice, technical course that requires all the shots. You got holes that go from the open to the woods, from the woods to the open, stay in the woods, and stay in the open. There were BIG left to right holes, and BIG right to left holes. For as tight of a course as it was, it had some pretty good length, and that made it a tough course. There are some birdie opportunities too though. There is a good use of elevation, and it makes for some fun shots. The elevation can cause trouble, on 11 for example, and make you avoid ending up in certain places. It punishes you when you miss your line, and you'll be scrambling for par. It also rewards you with birdie opportunities if you hit your line. The course was very well kept, and the teepads were nice and long.

Cons:

Navigation can be an issue, with multiple paths near the basket on some holes that lead to nowhere. And as previous reviews have stated, there is a long walk from 10 to 11. There was a softball game going on while we were there, and some people were pretty close to the fairway. There is also a dog area that you really need to throw over on 17 that you don't want to throw in and it gets in your way.

Other Thoughts:

I came here expecting a decent course and it turned out to be one of the better courses I've played. Probably my 2nd favorite in western Kentucky, behind Madisonville. I really enjoyed my round.

Good college town course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

While not situated on the campus of MSU, this course is only a hop-skip-and-jump away from it. A well used practice basket is placed adjacent to the parking lot and first hole. This technical course forces shot shapes and distance control to have a shot at birdie. The tee pads are adequate sized and grippy. The tee signs are exceptional about OB, tree lines, creeks, and whatnot. They even indicate where the next tee pads are. The baskets are typical Innova discatcher with chastity belts included that are fairly easy to spot in the woods. Holes range from very short and technical to mostly open and long though there are no true par fours here. The elevation is used well here for several down then up shots (1, 9, 10), a couple with severe drop offs (11, 12) and others that use the gradual slope to add or subtract effective distance.

Cons:

Unless you look at the tee signs to see where the next tee pad is, navigation here is a problem. There are multiple points on both the front and back nine where walking trails intersect the greens and one path leading you to the next tee while the others to oblivion. There are no signs to point the golfers in the right directions. As others have mentioned, after number 10 you have to walk all the way around the swimming pool to get to number 11. This is a needlessly long walk that could have been avoided. While this course forces multiple shot shapes, all of the hyzer holes (for RHBH) are roughly the same distance. Throw a ~265-275' shot and you'll be within the 10m circle on every single one of these holes. With the amount of walking trails that come into play on the course, several are on blind shots causing a safety issue for non-golfers. Number 3 has no gap to get to the basket but to get there, the thrower has to go over and back from a walking trail and a shelter where other park users may be cooking out or picnicking. This is not a quiet course, especially on the back nine. The large swimming pool on busy days is flooded with parents and lots of loud kids. Good luck concentrating with that going on.

Other Thoughts:

Murray gives a decent challenge and can be lots of fun for casual golf in-between classes or in your spare time. Playing here in tournaments will cause the gaps to tighten up, the trees to grow bigger and the baskets smaller but with good clean driving, lots of birdie chances await. This is a good beginner course that forces the player to learn shot shapes and touch on several of the fast greens. It plays well for advanced players to land their shots in certain places and hit their putts through the woods.

great course. has 18 holes 12 of them with alternate pin locations and one has an alternate pad. Right near the university so easy access. Some tough holes with some hard lines but mostly if you shoot a well placed shot you will get your deuce. The holes with alternate pin locations are nice. They add a variety of shots and challenges to the course. The parks do a great job of keeping the course nice and neat. The course has a lot of potential for new pin locations and new pad locations. The tee pads are very nice as well as the tee signs. great guys around the area and there is usually always someone who will play with you. there are a couple of local pros in the area as well.

Cons:

The only cons at this course are the potential opportunities to lose your disc. All in the woods so a lot of leaves to deal with. Writing on tee signs and basket for aces.

Concrete pads are a plus and the use of the land is very good, tee signs are great as well, didn't get lost almost at all not over grown at all, very technical course as well makes you learn to place your drives. Parks office sells Innova discs, problem is finding it. Fun short, but a little tougher than most recreational courses, and it doesnt bother any of the playgrounds at all except the walk from hole 9 to hole 10.

Cons:

Local player at hole 1 asked him if I could play a round with him and he told no and to just go on thought it was rude of him and didn't express the fun of playing the game either way he was the only local I had a problem with if it rains that place will be very very muddy. all the trails are worn down and even most of the fairways in the woods are just dirt. Hole 4 says it is a par 4 should be a 3, on this website it says its a 3 and thats how I played it. other than that it was a fun course.

Other Thoughts:

Leave the big drivers at home! Unless you throw sidearm and use big drivers for that, used my roc for basically every hole, also when it hit the dirt with an elevated pin the it and skidded up the hill, gave me an extra 30 to 40 feet to my drive

Well maintained and defined 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Course is very well maintained, great signs, and good flow from one hole to the next. All but two holes are well placed to avoid interference from other park activities. Plenty of challenges with trees, and elevation changes. Lots of variety throughout.

Cons:

Hole three is a blind tee shot, dog leg to the right. The tee pad is aligned in a manner, if you throw straigt off the pad, and go too far, there is a possibility of going in to a hidden pavilion, possibly full of people. Hole 17, dog legs to the left, with a fenced in dog area straight ahead off the tee. There's very little margin for error on this one. The fairway is only 15-20 feet wide at the bend. Throw too far and your disc could become a dog's toy.

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course for a woodsy course. The area is maintained well enough to easily find discs that leave the fairways. Finding your way from one hole to the next is easy, just follow the beaten path. And, if you over throw hole 11, it's a steep drop just a few feet past the pin.

Great technical challenge with poor upkeep 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 23, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It is a very challenging layout and most of the holes are heavily wooded. This could be one of the best courses in the area. Most of the holes are fair and require skill. For good players this should be a great course. The design of the course itself would justify a higher rating if not for the 'cons' issues. But for the maintenance issues, this course would be a 3.5 or higher rated course for good players.

Cons:

The maintenance of the disc golf course in this park has become deplorable. The Park appears to refuse to clean up the dead trees located on the edge of the fairways. There have been dead trees along the 1st fairway for at least three years. There has been a tree down across the fairway on holes 12 & 14 for over two years. The tree in the middle of hole 7 and the dead tree in the middle of hole 6 have finally been cut down. In light of the superior upkeep of other parks in the area (Mike Miller & Kess for example), the MCCPB should be embarrassed. Money is not an excuse because the park continues to spend money in many other ways. For example, the Park installed a prefab building in front of the tee pad on hole 6 and nearly a year later has yet to follow through on the promise to install a replacement tee pad.
The Park a few years ago also put in a dog park in direct line with the 17th hole which creates dangerous conditions. Some innocent disc golfer will someday be attacked or suffer a dog bite while retrieving a disc from the dog park area.

A couple holes require long straight shots through trees. The course, the front 9 in particular, can be very difficult for a beginner.

A rogue former club president installed alternate basket locations which are as a whole poorly designed. The alternate basket locations have also caused destruction of trees which has changed some of the lines created by the original course design. I would rate this course with the alternate pins no better than a 2 rating.

Other Thoughts:

There are innova and gateway discs for sale at the Park Office located on Payne Street at the old Chestnut Street Park. The park office is open on weekdays.

This course makes it tough for a first timer. However, this could and should be a great course. The design (until the dog park) is very good.

You should be careful to look out for walkers/hikers randomly walking the wrong way on holes (mainly on the back 9).

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 27, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I am totally updating and rewriting my review. I played this course back in 2009 and it was good then, but after my round in the summer of 2018, I was blown away. It has matured nicely and now has more holes. Summary: I am upping my rating from 3.0 to 4.0!

There are 3 sets of 9-hole loops with 1, 10, 19 all beginning near the parking lot. You could actually play the sets in any order or leave any out depending on your time. I feel that each 9 progressively became more challenging.

This course is a really tough test of skill and patience and at times strategy of how to best attack, but every hole is totally fair. It is mostly heavily wooded and the handful of more open holes on the first 9 still have plenty of trees to avoid. This place is also quite hilly, not insane, but the slopes on nearly every hole will definitely have an impact on your lie and footing. Also, some small creeks in play on some.

The most recent new 9 is amazing. It is longer yet still very hilly and wooded and some very tricky risk/reward basket placements. Each hole on this set has 2 permanent baskets: red (shorter) and yellow (longer.) This 9 could have just as easily been named its own separate course. I was really blown away at how well groomed these long wooded fairways were, knowing this was a newish set of holes. Well done designers and maintainers!!!

If I lived here or close to here, I would play here all the time.

Cons:

HB hole maps on the tee signs drive me crazy. Every hole on every course apparently looks the same on paper- some kind of straight ahead tadpole shaped fairway. On many of his courses you can usually see the basket from the tee, so who cares. But at this course most of the baskets are blind. You have to do a lot of scouting, and that can be doubly exhausting. I wish the signs had more detail as to which way the fairway was bending and where the basket actually is.

Hole 11 is essentially all by itself and you have to walk all the way around the pool to get there. Hard to find, long awkward walk, the hole is nothing special. Seems like there could have some other place to get a hole in besides there.

There are hiking trails winding all over the woods in all sections of the course. Some disc golf specific signs and arrows would be very helpful so first timers would know when to use those trails and when not to. (1st time here take a picture of the map)

Because the third 9 came later, it begins next to the first 9, with the middle 9 across the road. A bit weird if you did not know why they were numbered this way. Again, I might have kept the original course as 1-18 and then made the new 9 its own name like the advanced course or something, since there are also 18 baskets on it. Doesn't really matter, the volume of fun throwing here is the same regardless.

Other Thoughts:

The first 9 holes I did not remember very well after 9 years between rounds. Looks like the park has had some additions elsewhere, so not sure if these 9 have totally changed or just slightly changed or if all my course memories are blending together. In my old review I made a comment about hitting light poles on hole 1, but that seems to no longer the case. Oh well, doesn't matter because the course is great how it is now.

Just a couple minutes drive from the college campus.
