Now this is my kind of disc golf.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Courtland Township Park is a small part off 14 mile and Meyers lake. It has a playground and some pickleball courts on the grounds too. There is a porta pottie in the parking lot and a bulletin board.

- Layouts - This course has 4 different layouts. Each hole has two baskets (red and green) and two tee pads (short and long). I have played three of the layouts myself and it's nice to have a slight change up. Hole 1 and 10 both start were hole 18 ends, so if you want to go back and play an extra nine holes, it's easy to make that happen with both 9 and 18 also ending by the parking lot.

- Amenities - Nice baskets, good cement teepads, two signs at every hole at the short and long. Most holes have a bench at one of the tee pads. Next Hole signs when needed. Trash cans (while there could be more of these I think, but I also don't ever use them while here).

-Beginner and Rec Friendly - This is a course to play with new people or hope to get better scores for rec players. It uses the park really good and forces you to use a lot of different shots. It's not an insane tournament course with a lot of bombs, but it has some pretty lines with the ability to freestyle a bit.

-Shaded - On those hot summer days this can be a good course because there is a lot of shade out there. The last few holes are fairly open to the sun, but the rest is pretty decent.

-Stroller Friendly - This has a lot roots and stuff, but over all I didn't have any issues bringing my son in a stroller. He had a lot of shaded spots where I could park him as I did my next shots.

Cons:

- Double Baskets - The Double baskets can be kind of in the way on the hole sometimes. Talking to the designer it does not seem like that was the intent when making the course.

- Road Noise - Holes 1, 14 and 18 have a lot of this. It wasn't too bad for me, but some people have seemed to not dig it.

- Navigation - Some of the holes have a decent walk, and sometimes the shorts are in position that you may go to that pad before the long, this one isn't bad with the next tee signs, but on the first play through it could be hard.

Other Thoughts:

As a local this is a course that I get out and play as much as I can. Between all the different layouts there is really something for everyone. I have even seen groups bring kids and let them play from the shorts and adults play from long which is something you can do here. A lot of the reviews stating both baskets aren't in are probably from before the change to have them both.

I have added myself to the course as a guide, so if you ever need to play a round with someone hit me up. Depending on the time I may find myself available!

Worth a little bit of a drive 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tee pads: all in good shape, all well marked and signed, and gives you the possibility of playing it differently on another visit. Playing with my boys (ages 10 and 13) we enjoyed playing the short tees together. Even the long tees wouldn't be a huge challenge, but if you're looking to throw 400 footers, this isn't the place for it.

The fairways were not huge, but you weren't horribly punished for missing them - there were plenty of trees and bushes to get in the way but it was more forgiving than playing through. The holes were not terribly different from each other, but had enough variation to keep things interesting.

Cons:

Very flat, and not a ton of variety on the course. The posted presence of both A and B baskets for each hole, but then the complete lack of B baskets can be a little confusing. We only had the A baskets to shoot for (except for 18) and some of the B placements would have been a more interesting challenge. I would love to play on actual grass fairways instead of mowed weeds. The road noise is considerable.

Other Thoughts:

We visited based on decent reviews and the lack of very long holes, and we had a good time. All three of us would definitely visit again, and this course could become even better as it matures and is well taken care of.

Solid, but not memorable

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 2, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Courtland Township DGC is located in a rural area about 30 minutes north of Grand Rapids, MI.

Each of the 18 holes on this course has two large concrete tee pads in good condition, and two baskets in good condition. Both the long and short tee pads on each hole have a color tee sign showing the tee pad locations, pin locations, and all four possible distances (long tee to "A" pin, long tee to "B" pin, short tee to "A" pin, short tee to "B" pin). The "A" baskets are aqua green Prodigy models, and the "B" baskets are red ones.

On most holes it is a significantly different experience playing the different layouts. The pin placements are done well (some holes dogleg left, others dogleg right, others straight). There are a few open shots from tee to basket but in general there are at least a few trees on each hole to avoid. The fairway width varies quite a bit, from tight holes with thick woods on either side to wider "meadow" holes with only knee high brush on either side. The rough is generally punishing and thick, but not so thick that there is serious danger of losing a disc most of the time. I would recommend watching your discs carefully and/or using a spotter in the summer if you don't want to have to dig around.

Navigation is pretty smooth - there are a couple places where a Next Tee sign would help but it's mostly easy to tell where to go. There is also a kiosk at the front of the course with a course map.

Trash cans and benches are available throughout the course.

Cons:

This course uses the available space well, but other than trees and brush there aren't many other obstacles in play here (no water hazards, minimal elevation change, etc.). There also aren't really any holes that I thought were especially memorable or stood out. Each hole plays well but they started to kind of blend together for me.

Most holes are pretty short - whether playing "A" or "B" pins there aren't really any "grip it and rip it" type holes here, even from the long tees. The technical challenge does help to make up for this, but with the exception of #18 those who prefer long open bomber holes will probably be frustrated here.

The course is located near a busy intersection and right off of state highway M-57. Road noise can be heard throughout the course, detracting from the experience a bit (at least for me). An exceptionally bad throw off the long tee on hole 14 could also find one of the roads.

Other Thoughts:

I would call this a beginner friendly course and good for practice due to the variety of layouts and distances available. It is possible to play only the front nine or only the back nine as well. The long tees provide a decently challenging and technical round.

I think the designers did a great job with the land available. This course is a strong addition to the large catalog of courses in the area, but there is nothing to really set it apart in any way. It's not a destination course, but definitely worth a play if you are local.

UPDATES 2021/2022/2023/2024: New in 2022, baskets are permanently installed at both "A" and "B" pin locations - thus increasing the number of layouts available at any given time from 2 to 4. This course is not a destination but it's quite good for bagging and practicing. I have been returning to this one a couple of times a year. I would still consider myself a recreational player, and for me the longest orange layout is challenging. The medium red and purple layouts are interesting without being quite as challenging. The blue layout provides a round where I should absolutely finish under par, but it's still good practice. All of the above can be fun for me, depending on my mood, etc. The addition of the second set of permanent baskets is enough for me to bump this one up to a 3.5 rating. The only other improvements I can really think of are a couple of Next Tee signs, and maybe a mesh fence or something to prevent the possibility of throwing a disc into the road on #14 (it's definitely possible with a tree kick, especially when leaves are down).

Very Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is only minutes from our house so we play it a lot. This is only my wife's and mine 2nd year playing disc golf so not sure how qualified I am to comment on the course. However we really like this course as it is really hard to get in deep trouble so it allows us to work on our techniques and try the different types of disc without a great fear of loosing one. However it offers plenty of challenges to make the course fun and exciting. Another great thing about this course is it drains and dispels water excellent so rain doesn't create any terrible footing or flooding areas. We also like the practice basket as well as the large field to warm up the arm before starting to play.

Cons:

No real con's for us. I am sure more experienced players might find this course a little short for them, but it's just right for us novice players.

Good Course for the kids 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

2 tee pads and 2 pin positions rotating. The short tees are great for kids or a putter round. This course will only get better with time. They did a great job with the land they had.

Cons:

Lack of elevation change. Some barbed wire and trash on 15. Beware of the thorns.

Other Thoughts:

The one branch on 14 needs to go. It prevents the anhyzer shot.

A fairly typical course, with no strong negatives 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Concrete tees are installed for both short and long tees on all 18 holes, and are nicely done
-Fairly easy to navigate even on a first time
-Obvious effort to design a versatile course with available area, not a one throw fits all course.

Cons:

-Nothing outstanding or especially memorable, no "signature" holes that set this course apart.
-Only a couple holes for big arm players, which would be fine if it was a 'technical' course, but most holes are not especially technical either.

Other Thoughts:

I live in the area, so I'm extremely happy that this course is here. It'll be perfect for me to get some practice in, but it feels like a practice course, not likely to become anyone's favorite, or draw in people from out of the area to play.
No outstanding positives, and no outstanding negatives.
