Deer Lick Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Has concrete tee pads

Has tee signs

Has updated baskets (pictures here don't do it justice)

Has alternate basket placements for some holes

Has some benches throughout course

Course flows pretty well except for between holes #9 & #10

Has good mix of wooded and open fairways

Most holes have changes in elevations

Free Parking

Restrooms

Cons:

Some of the wooded fairways are narrow and can be quite unfair such as holes #4, #7, #8

Hole #14 has a swing near the fairway if the basket is in the long position

Course can get crowded with other parkgoers which can interfere in playing hole #14

Other Thoughts:

Course was renumbered back in 2013 so some of the earlier reviews could be misleading.
As noted in my course conditions update, construction of a new animal control center broke ground in March 2016 and has affected holes #1, #2, #5, #6, and #9. If wasn't for the construction, I would rate this a point higher. Hopefully, this course gets redesigned as it's one of my favorites to play and it's a short drive from nearby Boundary Waters Park. The park is very popular with parkgoers but you won't really come into contact with them until holes #11-14.

One Of the Really Good Ones 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 13, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Take the second entrance to the park past the official signage. This is where hole 1 and 18 are located. Drive to end of the parking lot to your right after you enter the ark. You will see the practice basket and the tee pad for 1 is just behind it towards the first park entrance with signage. Hole 2 is located across the entrance driveway/ Cross the old dilapidated putt putt course and go behind the batting cages. The tee is on the sidewalk before you go up the steps to the skateboard park.

The course is really well varied with several par 4's. As a solid am player I scored 65 on my first round here. The wooded holes are challenging, but the paths are there if you can turn your disc.

Cons:

Not going to complain. Came her alone, met new friends, had a great day on the course . Only would have been better if I hit the other two birdie ops and didnt get three fives on the par fours

Other Thoughts:

A new favorite ATL Metro course - Enjoy ...CHEENGZ!

Diverse course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Deer Lick is a very solid overall course in a multi use park not far from downtown Douglasville.

Ample parking is available as well as a practice basket and map near the parking area.

Teepads are enormous and gritty. I really liked them. Signage is good but a few need to be updated. Next tee signs are abundant and very helpful.

There are some cool elevated baskets, tunnel shots, wooded to open/vice versa and just a great mix overall.

Big well built benches on most holes and some interesting natural elements(water, rocks etc.)

Cons:

The navigation is not great, long walk between one and two is weird and advises you to go through a building. It was locked.

The next tee signs are helpful but very small. They are screwed into trees on what appears to be outlet covers.

The course I have few gripes with, it's pretty solid.

Some of the other aspects of the park detract greatly though.

There is put put and batting cages which could be cool, but they are in such disrepair that they are hazardous.

Which is odd because parts of the dog park and playground are new and awesome looking. So obviously the idea was they would be self sustaining and it failed.

Need to fix it or pull it.

Other Thoughts:

Really fun course that I will be playing next time I'm close. The minor cons withstanding this isnangood course where you won't be easily bored.

Long bombs, short tunnels, good baskets.

Also it appears a club or at least some dedicated individuals help care for this park.

Thank you for making it a good place to play.

Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good mix. Some technical and a couple bombers and a few short ones for a good chance at an ace. I like woods and this has plenty of that but has some fun clear ones, too.

Cons:

The one to two pad is a bit odd, and a few other tee pads are difficult to find. There is a sense of incompletion because the maps show two sets of pads for each hole when there is only one.

Other Thoughts:

Don't let the cons keep from going. This is a fun course and is pretty friendly for beginners most of the time but gives some great challenging lines for experienced players, too.

Pros:

Decently maintained. Fair mix of variety.

Cons:

Terrible transition from hole one to two. They want you to walk through a building to get there, but most everyone will walk across the miniature golf course. There are no garbage cans at all, as a result you see garbage on the tees. There are some significant walks between one hole to the next.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a pretty good course. Hole 15 is beautiful.

Great Multi-use park for DG 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course itself offers a good bit of diversity of shots that are required. I found myself reaching in my bag more than once in order to play a different shot than expected in a typical course layout.

The park itself is well kept and seems to have a lot of other activities if you haven't yet convinced your family that dg is the greatest thing to do. No tall grass or trash scattered around.

I really liked hole 4 and hole 13. Personal opinion, but I think that the layout of these holes was intriguing.

Signage was great and the mixture of gravel/ sand/ concrete pads were all well kept and for the most part rather large.

Cons:

Some holes seem to be just a touch too tight and technical. I am sure if I had the opportunity to play the course more often I could learn some local routes that may improve my scores, but as it stood I was cursing some tight turns.

I did not see any trash cans throughout the course. I stated in the pros that there was no trash, but it did mean holding on to that empty gatorade for the remainder of the round.

Side note: I hate any living thing with wings. I had to stop a few waterfowl from jumping the box on me on 1 and 3

Other Thoughts:

I played at 4:45 on a Friday. There was NO foot traffic on the course or otherwise. Because of how many offerings the park has I can understand that it would get backed up due to people enjoying the park.
When you enter the park follow along the entry road and park in the parallel parking spots behind the drainpipe. The rec center supplied me with a comprehensive map that even had brief descriptions of each hole. ( The map would be great for beginners, even though the course plays a great deal more difficult than others in the area.)
There was a tee pad marked 5A? It appeared to point to a recently cleared area but no basket as of yet.

Great signage, good "next tee" markings, wide range of shot types, open and wooded holes.

Other Thoughts:

Previous reviews mentioned poor signage. There are currently great signs on each tee. Pro / Con ( you decide) mixed tees. I am ok that there are different types of tees. Great park overall for multiple sports.

Incredibly Underrated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 27, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a mix of natural and concrete, but the natural tees were extremely effective and I noticed no difference.

An excellent amount of shot variety with a great blend of distances.

The disc golf course is pretty isolated from the rest of the park activities.

Good next tee signs.

Cons:

A couple trees could be removed on some of the holes to make slightly more fair gaps.

It would be NICE to have uniform tees although as previously stated I didn't notice a difference, maybe just more from an aesthetic standpoint.

Other Thoughts:

I can't quite place my finger on why white oak is the higher rated course of the two. I came in with pretty much 0 expectations because I did enjoy white oak earlier in the day.

I also didn't deal with any of the problems prerube had. I'm assuming he played on a day where it had rained or had rained previously in the week. So yeah, tee pads are probably going to be kinda messy for natural tees, that should be expected. The park was also not busy when we played, there were some people walking but they were never in danger.

We started on hole 8 because we pulled into the wrong entrance, it was a pretty standard hole, but once hole 9 puts you in the hoods for a couple, this course totally blew me away!

I thought that maybe minus hole 9(which I had a really sick ace run on, although mostly lucky :D) the holes were all very fair, the gaps were plenty wide of executing shots.

I'm assuming that they have added next tee signs fairly recently due to them being in nice shape, and other people complaining about navigation.

Sure, there's a couple long winding holes, but people need to have realistic expectations, you can't always throw your destroyer off the tee. A birdie is realistically obtainable on every hole by playing placement shots and playing smart golf.

It's definitely a preference thing, but if you're in the area, this is the course I would play. It's much more polished than white oak. Both were enjoyable courses though, with extremely contrasting styles of play, allowing for a really nice day of disc golf had by all.

Popular park, feels like 2 seperate 9 holers 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are concrete tees on some of the holes.
Hole 4 was the best hole on the front 9, shady, wooded, and good use of water.
tons of non-disc golf activities for the family including batting cages, putt putt golf, and more.
back 9 is far superior to the front nine, more wooded, longer and interesting. (many say it is too tight and unfair, but I liked it)
Holes 13 and 14 were fun shots 300 feet over a valley and 400 feet through the woods.
Bathrooms available
Some elevation used, hole 16 is the most memorable use of elevation.

Cons:

Navigation is an issue: finding hole 9 is a very common issue, it was on the edge of the opposite side of the putt putt course.
Park is very busy: 3 plays between a road and a busy walkway, on hole 7 I had to wait six minutes for a group of picnicers to get out of the way.
Hole 8 had road on the left which could be a safety concern.
inconsistent tee pads: 1 was concrete while hole 5 was a slippery, muddy, clay pad.
holes 17 and 18 were cramped and very similar.

Other Thoughts:

I hear many people talk about the front 9 as the better 9, but it was so crowded that if I were local, I would come and play the back 9 twice. Hole 4 would be the only hole I would miss. Maybe if I were alone when I played the front 9 I could give this course a 3.5, but I had to shape my shots around people, not the course.

Got Licked 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a very well thought out course. Plenty of trees, and chances to use just about all the shots in the bag !!! #3 seems a little weird with the swinging bench in the way up high, or if you stay low on the fairway, you have the walkway and the lake just waiting for a stray shot !!! #16 is still kinda a mess, even though I never saw it before the ( clean up ) !!!

Cons:

A sign directing you to the # 9 tee would be helpful for first timers. And a final leveling, scraping and grass planting on #16 would really be a nice final touch to a great layout !!!

Other Thoughts:

I love this course, and will be back many times I'm sure !!!

Nice! Well worth the drive. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Layout - The course makes great use of area within park. The holes are laid out well and the course is pretty easy to navigate.
Shot selection - I will have to say that this is one of the few courses that is very well balanced for both right and left handed players. I also liked the mix of wooded and open holes.
Park - Seems like a great park. Lots to do and well maintained.

Cons:

My only real issue would be the two finishing holes 17 and 18. They seem kind of cramped compared to the other holes.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I thought that this was a great course. Hole 3 was a nice challenge with the water to the left but not a huge issue to worry too much about losing a disc. My favorite hole had to be 4, can't throw to high and the basket is guarded by the stream. The wooded fairways on this course are nice and the brush has been cleared. Overall I didn't have high expectations for this course but it far exceeded them and made the trip worth it.

Deer Lick does the job 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 25, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Deer Lick Park is a nice recreational park that hosts a very good disc golf course as well as a miniature golf course, batting cages, ball fields, walking trails, a community garden, a pond and more. The disc golf course is fun and challenging, with holes featuring a good mixture of wooded and open fairways that are varying lengths, and nice elevation changes and a couple of water hazards. Constant changes give new looks from one part of the course to the next. The tee pads are mostly natural, but in good condition. They all have signs showing the distance. All baskets were in place and in fair condition.

Cons:

The layout of the course was sort of disjointed, so a map may come in handy. I missed the transition from 8 to 9, where you cross the mini golf course and tee off next to the batting cages. There are places where other park users near the disc golf course, so be cautious.

Other Thoughts:

Deer Lick Park is a versatile and unique course that is certainly worth checking out. It may not be a total stunner, but it is a high quality course that I would be happy to play regularly. There are opportunities to shoot under par, but the OB and wooded fairways can add strokes quickly.

I play here all the time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 9, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

As far as permanent courses go, this is one of the closer ones to Atlanta. It only takes about 30 minutes for me to get there from Midtown.
It's a nice, well seasoned course with a fair mix of holes.
It has never been crowded when I have played, and the people that I have seen all have great course etiquette.
The mix of shots and distances makes this a good challenge for just about everyone.
The course is always well maintained, and the bugs are minimal.
Some really tough lines out there for the risk-takers, but the fairways are pretty clearly defined.
With the revised layout, the course seems to flow better. It still has distinct sections to it, with different styles of play necessary for each section.
Parking/practice basket/start of course from the segregated lot is nice, especially during baseball/football seasons.
I see a lot of people doing other activities around the park, but have never had an issue with crowding on the course.

Cons:

Some would say that the mixed tee pads are a con, but they are all maintained well.
There could be more trash cans on the course, but it is exceedingly rare to see a course with cans, and have them emptied regularly. I'd rather haul my own trash than tee off near a can full of beer cans and bees.
There a a couple "filler" holes that don't require much skill, but they are also a good balance for players who don't throw 400 feet and still want a birdie.

Other Thoughts:

I love this course. It's not the most challenging one I've played by far, but it is interesting and always keep me pushing myself to do better.
The use of open spaces and elevation are pretty good here and there's not really a huge advantage for the 400+ foot drivers. It's a nice, quite park for a casual round of disc golf. If you consider the other options close to Atlanta, I believe it's one of the better ones to play. White Oak isn't too far away from here, so if you have the time and energy, play both. This isn't a championship level course, but it is entirely worth playing and highly enjoyable.

Deer Licker 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 11, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Playing through a multi-activity park, this course offers the chance to see all ends of the grounds while having the opportunity to knock some birdies down. The course at Deer Lick does a great job of mixing up the types of shots you have to throw while popping in and out of the woods. Several holes are under 250 feet and have minimal objects in your way which give you the chance at a few ace runs. The length and variety of holes makes this course one I will have to play again.

Cons:

Not every tee pad had a sign indicating basket placement or distance, which can be irritating if you havent played the course before. Having concrete tee pads is a luxury and is often taken for granted, so take advantage of them at this course when they are available, otherwise you are dealing with playing on dirt or grass tees. I enjoy playing holes in the woods, and I also accept the challenge of courses that are only in the thick tree fairways. But a few holes are extremely tight consistently along the fairway and can be difficult to beginner players. Without playing the course before hand it can be pretty tough to navigate.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course that has a nice mixture of lengthy holes, wooded ones, and wide open shots that plays throughout this fantastic park. Maybe mini golf could make the schedule next time I'm at the park, as they do have a course on the grounds. The front nine holes are more open and are definitely easier to birdie, but the back nine really test your precision.

I got Deer Lick'd 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

A huge variety of holes and terrain. The front 9 has been described as almost like being in a different park on each hole and it is pretty accurate. The front 9 also features some pretty nice tee pads.
The course is also a true challenge, there are very few gimme's out here, you have to work for all your pars and really work for the deuces.

Cons:

The back 9 is just violent. Long, twisty mini fairways through the woods at 400'. Very unforgiving.
Long walks at points make a tough round even tougher in the heat.
Good luck without a map, so print it...or wander aimlessly.

Other Thoughts:

I would rate the front 9 a 4 and the back 9 a 2.5 so you end up with 3.25 which I feel is a good fair score. The back 9 could be a little more fair, but it is do-able, but I would say you have just as good a chance at a 5 as you do a 3. I would have liked to have seen better signage, without the map we printed from here we would've been lost.

Hole 4, Hole 8, Hole 9 are awesome, 12 and 13 are nice, 15 is not bad either...there really are not a lot of "bad" holes but a lot of holes that will just take your belt off and smack you with it mercilessly.

This is a good course in a great park with a ton of amenities. It is definitely not a beginner course and it will make you feel right awful if you try to take it on and don't have the skills.

Deer Lick Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete pads; some challenging wooded holes that make you really plan out some tricky throws; good start--the first three holes are short but trecherous; restrooms & ample parking at start & end of course; holes #1 and #18 are in close proximity (short walk to/from car).

Cons:

Difficult to follow the flow of the course, even with the map; lots of orphaned tee pads from previous course layout; tee signs missing on most holes; cracked & unlevel tee pads; too many "throw it there and it's gone for good" water hazards; congestion with other park activities on a few holes; some wooded holes have soo many tees they are throw & pray only.

Other Thoughts:

On the day I played with my kids, there seemed to be a lot of "suspicious" activity going on in the park. After 8 holes, I became so concerned that I decided to pack it in for the day. On the walk back to the car, park police & local police swarmed the park obviously looking for someone on the run. This is the only park where I have had safety concerns while playing disc golf.

Deer Lick 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really enjoyed the front nine. It's almost too easy. Average players have a great chance of making a birdie. Pros will be way under par.

#1, 2 and 6 are great Hole-in-One opportunities.
#8 and 16 have awesome wide open tee shots.
#13 is a great short hole with an elevated tee and pin.

Cons:

Finding your way around the first time is difficult. Bring a map! The tees are marked by a 4x4 post sticking out of the ground. The tee pads are natural, but in good condition. I don't remember any benches.

The fairway on the wooded holes (10, 11, 14, 15) are very narrow. They are similar to Oregon Park's Coffin Hole (#6) or McCurry Park's Hole from Hell (#2). The surrounding trees are new growth and are could easily be cut down to enhance the playability of these holes.

My score would be a point higher if navigation and these holes were improved.

Other Thoughts:

There is a refreshment stand between 8 and 9. It was closed when I was there on a weekday. There is also a skate park, batting cages, and putt-putt course.

Park behind the lake. #1 is between the road and lake. There's a gas station or two between I-20 and the park to get snacks or drinks.

Great course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good mix of shots needed for this course. I liked the progression of the course, 1 and 2 are short, 3 is long and deceptively hard, 4 is a beautiful downhill shot with an evil pin placement. The back nine is a nice mix of open and tight technical through woods. Some holes are "shoot and pray" as there is just a hint of a "fairway".

15 is a great open downhill . When I played there were mounds of lovely Georgia clay 1/2 way to the tee. Made for an interesting "Links style" shot from slippery mud.

Cons:

Poor signage! I expect this will improve over time, probably in the spring (hopefully in the spring?)

After you finish the hole by the parking lot (I forgot whether it is 8 or 9) the next tee pad is up the hill behind the batting cages. VERY EASY TO MISS!

dirt tees marked by flags.

I rated this a 3.5 due to the layout of the course. Had I taken the signage into consideration I would drop it to a 3.

This Course Handed Me My Lunch! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course can and will frustrate most players. A great drive can sometimes land OB. There are some awfully tight holes, especially on the back nine.

There were two holes which really stood out for me as "signature holes" on this course, # 4 and # 13. # 4 is only a 269' slight hyser throw across an open field to a basket set about 50 feet into the woods and guarded on three sides by a creek (almost dry in mid-July). The entrance to the woods is fairly tight in inself and then you have the creek to contend with. I luckily got through the opening landed about 8 feet from the basket - splashed down OB. And like the map says # 13 is a favorite of many of the locals and I can see why. It's a 296' slight hyser shot out over the field to a basket perched just up the hill at the edge of the field. Just a pretty DG hole.

Cons:

Many dirt tee pads. The back nine did feel like an after thought, like they were't quite thought out as well as the front nine. Some were more luck than skill throws. Navigating this course would be very difficult without a map. On # 3, my 2nd up-shot would have been aimed directly at a couple swinging on a bench between me and the hole. Oh well, it probably saved my disc from rollong into the lake below. The tee sign distances were not very accurate at all. There were very few resting benches on the course.

Other Thoughts:

This course wore me out both physically and mentally. I'd like to play it again for the challenging aspect and of course, to throw #'s 4 and 13 again.
