Rollaround Ridge 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Sand, Pines, Elevation, Wildflowers, Beaver Bay Beach, Bike Trails, & Discgolf :)

Prettiest of the Farragut Courses

There's a little Ridge throughout the Course, so AWOL has the most Elevation Involved out there

The Fun and Excellent Design uses the Ridge in numerous different ways

Challenging Greens with the Basket precariously positioned on a Ledge 2 8 11 14 & 15

Fun and Challenging Deuce Opportunities! 2 3 5 7 8 9 12 13 14 15 16 & 17

Par4s on a Third of the Holes 1 4 6 10 11 & 18
Each of these Holes are Excellent

Challenging Doglegs on Par4s, can really Spice things up for a Card! 4 & 18

500 foot Hole 1 is pretty Awesome. In the Theme of the Hole 1s, but a Great Par 4 Version

5 n 6 have a Parkish style to them that adds to the Diversity on Awol, a couple good examples of the Fun and Esthetically Pleasing Design

Like how 7 n 8 Reciprocate Down n Up

10s been really Pretty with all the Yellow and Purple Flowers into mid August

11 and 18 are Beasts
Not sure which one is Tougher to 3, but they both involve about as much Elevation change as you'll get in One Hole out at Farragut, and it's Up

12-17 can be a Birdy Fest if you're Dialed-In

Teesigns with an Overhead Illustration are Sweet, and they show Next Tee too :)

Cons:

Several Holes feel similar, with an Uphill Drive to a Basket on a Ledgeside with a Mid 8 14 & 15

Other Thoughts:

Blind Holes 1 3 4 10 11 & 18

I Love playing this Course!
I throw Meteors all day off the Tee, on like 11 Holes :D

Challenging Well Designed Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent combination of distance and technicality

Great overall flow with both 9's looping back to starting area

Six par 4's that play as two shot holes for the vast majority of players

Some elevation in play, plus or minus 5 to 10 feet on around half of the holes

Good mix of L to R, R to L, and straight tee shots

Trees in play on the majority of shots outside 75' of the basket

Good sized concrete tees

Tee signs with basic info and graphic of the hole, plus some WW II history

Cons:

Single tee pads and basket positions (there are a couple of alternative pins, but they rarely see play)

Tree kicks off the fairway can be very punishing as most trees in the deeper rough have not been trimmed

Entry fee to the park is now $7 per vehicle

Ground can be a little uneven in spots

Other Thoughts:

Very few penalty strokes, not a lot of OB in play. This could be considered either a pro or a con.

The lack of alternate tees and pins would be a larger negative if there weren't four other courses on site for some variety.

I have birdied every hole, except hole 18, multiple times, and I'm certain I have bogeyed every hole, except hole 16, multiple times. This is a course that if I'm playing my best, double digits under par is possible. If my game is off however, double digits over par is also possible. I cannot think of another course I have played where such a wide scoring spread is possible for me.

AWOL is the most well-rounded course at Farragut State Park, and, for me, has the largest fun factor of the five courses.

Pros:

Combination of a little open play but lots of forests. I found the course challenging but fair. Looking at the various lanes to try and take was a blast. No garbage on the course but I did wish twice on the course that I could find a garbage can next to a tee box. Perhaps I just missed them.

Cons:

A couple of large holes that were ankle breakers

Other Thoughts:

Amazing complex as a whole. Thanks to Idaho State Parks and Rec.

Get to Athol for A.W.O.L. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

A.W.O.L. is a tough par 60 course. The layout is really well done, with converging nines, and great variation. No two holes are alike, and none of them are too easy.

The concrete tees were good, there are tee signs, and the baskets are AOK. The grounds of the park were immaculate. A truly beautiful place to camp, I was at the Whitetail campground, very near the disc golf parking and close to Bayview if you need supplies.

Did I mention there are 3 other 18 hole courses right there on site? I only played two of the four, and AWOL was the better of them.

There is almost no elevation change, and no water in play, but the different looks from hole to hole were still good. The fairways are often narrow, and do not offer much room to deviate from the intended line. The pin will be protected with tight gaps in between trees giving limited access. Making accurate drives and leaving yourself with good angles to approach and make putts is crucial if you want a good score.

The rough is usually playable enough to have a chance at recovery should you ricochet off the path a little bit. Six par 4 holes give the course extra distance. They are long, and some have tight dogleg turns, but par is on the table if you make good, consistent throws.

Cons:

If you are not camping in the park, there is a $5 daily vehicle fee for using the disc golf facilities. A bargain price for what the park has to offer.

There is no serious elevation change, which I always love to see included. No water in play either. Makes things more beginner friendly, but not quite as much fun. Great for what there is to work with though.

Other Thoughts:

Farragut State Park is beautiful. The campgrounds are cozy and clean, and the disc golf is outstanding. Five 18 hole courses, and AWOL will give a strong challenge to most players.

I was fortunate, because the area had been filled with smoke from wildfires just a couple of days before, but it had finally cleared out and the weather was perfect. I only stayed one night before traveling to the next stop, but you could spend all week playing on the lake and camping and not get bored if you wanted to.

Finished with a 65, 5 over par on the only round I got in at AWOL. One birdie, thirteen pars, two bogies and two double bogies. It felt good for first time out on a tricky course. If I had made a few putts I could have been in the neighborhood of par, but they just weren't going in that afternoon. Still me and the dog really enjoyed it all the same.

Kind of reminded me of Magnolia DGC in Live Oak FL, or Chester State Park in SC. Long tree lined fairways that put controlled accurate shots at a premium. Very fun and a good test of skills.

So Many Trees, So Little Time... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is the longest and toughest of the three 18-hole courses at Farragut State Park.

This course has six par 4 holes, including very challenging beginning and ending holes.

These are legitimate par fours that require hitting a specific landing area with your first drive, and then driving again on a different line to the basket. Two good drives will give you a look at a birdie, but missing either drive will have you looking at bogie or worse.

Most holes are tightly wooded, with narrow fairways. Each hole has at least one, and often more fair routes to hit, but they will punish shots that are even slightly off line. The rough can get pretty tight.

Good risk/reward opportunities on several holes. They offer one tight, straight line to the basket that gives a chance for a birdie, but if missed will take you to bogie quickly. Or another safer line that eliminates the birdie but gives a better chance for par.

Large, flat concrete tee pads, and good Innova baskets. Tee signs are simple brown lathes with hole number, par, and distance. Each basket has a "next hole" arrow, and navigation is simple.

Large parking area with drinking water, restroom, practice basket, and a driving net. The course makes two nine-hole loops so you can hit the restroom, refill water or get to your car after the front nine.

Cons:

There is little elevation change on this course. There are a few holes that play up or down maybe 10 - 15 feet, but that is about it.

If you like big, open drives this is not the course for you.

The tee signs are simple hole #, par, and distance. A larger sign with the hole layout would be welcome for first-timers as the basket location is hidden from several of the tees.

Other Thoughts:

Farragut State Park is an outstanding disc golf destination. With a family friendly 9-hole course (being expanded to 18) and three very good 18-hole courses, you can play here for many days and not get bored.

Check out the Visitor Center for a very nice selection of reasonably priced discs.

Pros:

The Newest of the three courses at Farragut. A very challenging (sometimes long) and well laid out course consisting of some shorter technical holes along with a few long holes (620 ft for example). One of the things I enjoy most about Farragut is, the parking lot can be full but the percentage that you'll have to wait or even run into another group is very minimal.

Cons:

No real elevation changes' mostly level ground unlike Wreakreator. Can be rough if your not in shape due to amount of acreage covered.

Other Thoughts:

Improvements are being made and things are looking great!

Accuracy Is A Must Here! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The A.W.O.L. course is the third and most demanding of the tri-fecta here at Farragut. It's across the park road from it's sister courses. It is very similiar in nature to Northstar and the Wreckreator courses in the fact that they are all accuracy based courses played through the Northern Idaho Pine forests. What separates A.W.O.L. from the other two is it's 6746' in length which is about 2000' longer than Northstar and tops Wrecreator by just over 1000'. In difficulty alone, this is a 4.5 to 5.0 course. There are extremely tight fairways starting with # 1. Getting off the fairway can easily lead to double and triple bogies. The tee pads are roomy concrete ones. The signs are simple wooden posts with distance and pars on them. I played the first 9 holes alone and was able to navigate fairly easily.

#15 was a pretty hole with kind of a natural looking fairway leading to the basket.

#1 and #18 both standout as classicaly tight "stay on the fairway hope you can throw straight" holes. Both on long par 4's with extreme rough. I was in trouble on both of them.

Cons:

There are 18 holes here. All 18 are level with little to no elevation. They are all played through thick pine forests. There is no water. There is not a signature hole. There is not a place for where the big arm player can crank out the 400' drive. There isn't that hole where you are standing on the edge of some ridge watching your drive sail for what seems like an eternity. This course doesn't have the natural "take your breath away beauty" of so many of our NW courses. Standing in the center of a forest and looking at more forest is cool but not my idea of beautiful. I really like breathtaking scenery on my courses.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very nice course. It's a very nice design. My hats off to the course designers. You did a wonderful job here. but while A.W.O.L. is an extreme challenge, it's only an extreme challenge in ONE way. That is-You must be able to throw straight and accurately to score well here. Players with really big arms would be neutralized here. The # 1 rated player in the world would not be able to throw his gigantic hyser bombs.

To sum up, this is one nice course but it doesn't quite measure up to top Northwest courses like Whistlers Bend, Dexter, Milo McIver and Pier Park in Oregon or Cape Fear over in Spokane. They all have the whole package going; courses that challenge you in a variety of ways, beautiful scenery, water, epic downhill holes, scary risk/reward holes.

A.W.O.L. is a great challenge but it's a one-trick-pony.

Perfect and evil 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Where to start... Perhaps the most intimidating hole one in the northwest (certainly the most daunting I've come across). A very high risk to reward factor on several holes. Routes galore if you look with the right kind of eyes. Well balanced for all styles of throwing (backhand, sidearm, lefty righty). Distance is well balanced with long and short nicely mingled throughout. Well gaurded and well thought out pin placements. Narrow (seriously) fairways that reward the accurate and punish those who throw errant. Nice flat concrete pads at every tee. Hole 18 is destined to become a classic. Gorgeous doesn't hurt either.

Cons:

Nothing that ruins it. Some debris still on course due to fairway manufacturing. Nowhere near what it was like at the very beginning and will probably cease to exist after the snow thaws. No clear directional labels to guide those unfamiliar with the layout. Umm, it will make you look bad if you don't bring your best. May still make you look bad even if you bring your best (it maybe better).

Other Thoughts:

Well done to every person who had a hand in the design or helped build it. Its a very rewarding place to play when your on and still fun (to a point) when your off. Case in point. Went and threw a par three weeks ago with a wonderful birdy on the par four hole six. Went out to play a fundraiser last weekend and threw a five over on the same hole. Not for begining players. Its the best course within six hours of spokane. I highly recommend all to come play it. Be warned as it may bruise your ego once your done.

Pros:

Great layout! Demanding drive right outa the gate!
well placed baskets and clean fairways, while still keeping them technical. Nice concrete tees.
Great distance shots throughout the whole course.

Cons:

Needs some good tee signs with distance and hole numbers. Navigating hole to hole was a little tough the first few times I played this course, but just like any new course, as it gets broken-in, basket to tee trails will be obvious.

Other Thoughts:

Fantastic course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Some demanding fairways that make you think more than twice about your shot. The front 9 make a nice loop close to the parking lot to replenish your fluids before you head to the back 9. When you start the back 9 hold on, because there are back to back par 4's and hole 11 is the harder of the par 4's on the course, then there's hole 18 which is a great finishing hole.

Cons:

Not enough holes-the course is fun and a challenge to play. I get bummed out about hole 15 knowing that there are only 3 holes left.

Other Thoughts:

Keith the park ranger has been the best thing that Farragut state park and all of us disc golfers could ask for, he has done a great job for the discgolfers with keeping up on the courses. Give him a high 5 when you see him, he deserves much more.

North Idaho Steps Up Its Game 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 14, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Where to begin...I think the best place to start would be the overall design of the course. While the length is fairly substantial ( I believe it is around 7000ft) the holes themselves are a throwback to early disc golf, meaning accuracy will be rewarded over power. With that said, many of the larger holes will entice the big arms with some of the imaginative fairway designs.
Using hole one as an example:
Teeing from under a ceiling of trees through a tunnel the first 100 alone is demanding. Adding to the challenge the fairway and landing area are elevated by an 8ft rock wall. If you clear the wall and travel another 250ft or so you have put yourself in a great position to attack the protected green as the fairway once again narrows.
What I love about this hole is that a conservative fairway driver off the tee will provide a good chance at a three with only a 325-350ft tee shot, leaving between 150-200ft to the pin. But for all the big arms out there, the fairway is begging to be challenged and piercing the narrow gap to the pin provides a perfect Risk vs Reward for a 75-100ft Eagle opportunity.
This theme plays itself out over and over on this course which makes for some exciting golf and what I expect to be some exciting tournament rounds in the future.
There are 3 par fours on the front (Holes 1, 4, 6) and 3 on the back ( Holes 10, 11, 18). The back nine
provides ample opportunity to score well, especially holes 15 through 17 which. They can certainly provide some much needed birdies as you make your way to the beast of a hole that is 18. I believe that if this course has the opportunity to host some large scale events, hole 18 will become the premier finishing hole in the Northwest. The fairway is slanted to the left and very tight, maybe only 45 ft wide and split at the corner (again providing that all important aggressive vs conservative theme). A good tee shot will dog leg left after about 280ft and carry left another 50ft or so setting up a demanding upshot shot of about 200ft to an elevated green canopied beneath pine trees. A 3 on this hole is a terrific score.
Overall the Clever design, Beautiful surroundings, and challenge of this course make it not only fun to play but a good tournament course as well.

Cons:

The only problems i have with this course will be fixed as it ages. The tee pads are going in i believe very soon. And many of the trails between the holes that are hard to follow will be worn down with time.

Other Thoughts:

Thank Park Ranger Keith if you ever see him, his dedication to disc golf in Farragut is the reason their are 3 wonderful courses for all of us to enjoy!

Risk reward is the name of the game. Bring your Teebird or other control driver. The course is cleaned up fully and in speaking with Keith the pads will be poured on the August the 25th. The course has a couple of am level par 4's and advanced level par 4's and two pro level par 4's. There are also alt pins that will be in soon that will push some of these par 4's even further back. Lefty's will find a tough but fair course as well.

Course is not ready 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

When completed, this could be a really nice course. It was still under construction when I played it.

There were about four true par 4 holes out there, and once the area has seen some use, this should be the best of the three courses. Not for beginners, though.

All the pins are in, and they are numbered.

Cons:

No concrete tee pads, yet.
No signs, but there were (decaying) scraps of paper on trees near several of the tees.
No clearly defined paths between pins and tees, yet.

Other Thoughts:

I slogged my through this course, getting lost 2x, but eventually playing all of the holes as laid out.

I shot a 62, and par is 60. I felt ok with that, although 5 of the last 9 holes are unimaginative, short holes that should be birdied. I think par on this should be closer to 58 or 57.

One of the tougher courses you will ever find 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 4, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Double Black Diamond Course is the new 18 hole disc golf course at Farragut State Park and combined with the North Star and Wreckreator Disc Golf Courses respectively this makes this place THE disc golf destination in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. As of right now the course is in and ready to play but is still being worked on so the tee signs and concrete tee pads are not currently in place but the natural pads are easy to use and navigation at the course isn't much of a problem. For those of you like myself who are sad to see the family friendly course go away don't worry because they are currently working on a four hole short course for beginners and children nearby. This course is on the other side of the road from the other two courses and you are still able to use the warm up net for driving and the practice basket for putting as well as the large parking lot and unisex bathrooms. There is also camping on site with running water and showers as well.

This is one of if not the most challenging course I have ever played in my life but with that being said it wasn't overly frustrating and even though I was many strokes over par I was still having fun and enjoying this beautifully made disc golf course. The course has many par four holes that are not only long but extremely difficult to get anywhere near par if you find yourself off of the small but fair fairways. Lots of epic holes and this is the type of course that will better your game and make you learn many different shots, this is the ultimate risk vs. reward course.

The tee pads as of now are either old snowmobile tracks or conveyor belts but they are skinny pieces of rubber that do a decent job for now until the concrete is put in. For most of the holes there is a nearby tree that has a piece of white paper stapled into it that tells you the par, length and name of the hole. There are also little orange flags stuck in the ground that lead you down the fairway or to the next tee pad. The baskets are all in great shape and there is no litter what so ever that I could see. Flow leads you back around to the car.

Cons:

Hole nine is the only hole on the course that I was not in love with. It is a poke and pray hole with no fairway what so ever and no way to go under or over the trees. On most of the holes it looks like they have gone through and created beautiful fairways but for some reason on this hole they decided not to cut down any trees and I think two or three would have done the job. There isn't much elevation at the course other than a few small hills which could be a pro or a con depending on who your ask. This course will kick your butt! Do not bring first timers here unless you are trying to get revenge on them or something.

Other Thoughts:

One of the coolest things happened to us while we were playing the course somewhere in the back nine but I can't remember which hole. We were putting when we see a doe walk through on one of the paths noticing us but still going through and eat the grass along her way. We putt out and start walking toward the next tee pad which is towards her and as soon as we get too close she kind of slowly hops away. It was a pretty cool experience being only 40 or 50 feet away from this deer and I imagine we were able to get so close because it is a state park and the deer probably see humans quite a bit. Overall a wonderful job done on this one, I can't wait to come back!
