Historic Northwest Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 1979 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First, a little history. This little pole target course was the result of the then, Fircrest Recreation Director, Jim Valentine, viewing an article in a Parks & Recreation Journal about the first Disc Golf Course in the world which had just opened in California.

The course was designed and opened in 1977 for use of the then popular, Whamo frisbees.

The course uses target poles and plays in a counter clockwise direction around Fircrest Park. The park is flat with some mature trees and is popular with all. There are no signs and no tee pads. It was meant to be played from basket to basket. Distances originally were from 90' to about 300' although the design has changed over the years.

Cons:

Target poles don't compare to baskets.

Park is well used and all or part of the course is often unavailable for play.

Distances are not appropriate for today's high speed discs.

No tee pads.

No signs. It was designed to be played from basket to basket.

Other Thoughts:

Arguments were very common in the day about whether a putt or drive, especially on those ACES, had actually touched one of the poles. We designers didn't think to paint two lines on the poles and require the discs to hit between the lines. Instead, everyone just aimed for the bottom of the pole so oftentimes when you walked up to the target, the disc would be lying 1/2" away with no way of verifying whether or not if your throw was short by 1/2" or had it hit the pole and bounced back a little.

My rating? This is a 0 or at best, a 0.5 rated course. But since I was one of the designers/builders, I'm giving it a 1.0. Maybe, I could justify it by proclaiming the 1.0 is for the historical significance. Yea, so that will be my story.
