Good Potential But Needs Serious Work

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 2, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nestled behind Grace Place Church off of Central Pike in Hermitage, with some TLC and some new tee pads and signage, this course has the potential to be a solid disc golf outing.

-A lot of elevation change

-Good variation of shot shapes

-Challenging but a comfortable amount of challenging

-Nice scenery, you definitely feel removed from civilization on certain holes (even though two holes directly border I-40, (I believe holes 9 and 12)).
Natural growing cacti everywhere on hole 2.
There is also a really cool and very old little cemetery off to the right on the path in between two of the holes (I believe in between holes 6 and 7 but I may be wrong..)

(This could be taken as a pro or a con, but there is a massive sinkhole with a destroyed house in it to the left of the fairway on hole 17. Abandoned tools, toys, etc litter the sinkhole as it looks like the original occupants had to up and leave in a flash.
Somewhat of an eyesore, but definitely one of those things that makes this course super unique.)

-Good workout for those who value length and any exercise element that comes with disc golf. Like I said, a lot of elevation change and a relatively long course. (North of 3 miles long if I had to guess.)
Most holes range in the 220-375 foot range with a few holes, I believe, north of 450 feet (namely holes 9 and 10.)

-A few of the holes have the potential to be very iconic if maintained properly and updated.

-The baskets are nice, cannot recall the specific brand or model, but they felt very new.

-A lot of parking.

-Not a lot of other players, never have run into someone else while playing there.

Cons:

-Very overgrown on a regular basis. Played it without issues maybe 10-15 times but the last 3 or 4 times I've had to quit by the 4th hole due to severely uncut grass and untrimmed foliage towards the pin; pretty hard to continue on from there because it just gets thicker and less maintained the further into the course you go.
A lot of thorn bushes on this course, too. (Especially make sure to avoid the edges of the fairway on hole 8.)

-A looooooot of ticks right now due to the current condition of the course. Last time I played, I found 5 ticks on my shoes/legs/bag by the end of the 4th hole.

-I do not use a cart, but I can see this course being extremely difficult to navigate a cart on. Namely on hole 5 where the pin is on an island surrounded by giant rocks without a bridge or walkaround, holes 6, 7, 9, and 10 due big elevation changes, and a few others on the back 9.

-A few of the holes are a VERY hard birdie. While the course itself is challenging with tight fairways and some requiring unique shot angles, there are a few holes that rest right on that line of being an easy par but a nearly impossible birdie, even for a very experienced tour player.
For this reason, and for reasoning of possibly getting hit by someone else's shot, some of the teepads need to probably be moved/rethought.

-Certain holes will punish you and your score if you miss the fairway. Even when this course was maintained enough to play it from front to back, the edges of most of the fairways were not cleared out, making finding hiding discs very challenging (and sometimes dangerous).
I personally have not lost a disc here but can see how it would be a very common occurrence. First time I took one of my buddies here, he lost two.

-The teepads are very low quality mats/carpet on most of the holes, some not having anything to mark where you're supposed to throw.
One hole (I think hole 12), you're driving from a 5foot by 3foot ledge above a 10-12 foot steep slope into an immediate sharp dogleg right. No room for a step forward. Extremely dangerous, could see someone getting badly hurt.
They need to dig that out more and provide a safe, flat and even space to drive.

-Signage. While the course has some signage, it does not point you towards the next hole, which is something that is desperately needed at this course. The first few times I played, I was unknowingly skipping holes 9 and 10 because I was not keeping score. (After hole 8, go left for hole 9+10).
I would highly recommend using UDisc to navigate

-There are no trash cans at this course. Pack in, pack out.

-No benches at this course outside of the benches by the playground/grilling area by the pin of hole 18.

-There are no bathrooms, unless you want to attempt going into the church.

Other Thoughts:

With a good amount of TLC to the grounds and with some new tee pads and signage, this course has the potential to be a 3.5-4 star course.
Unfortunately, until certain things are updated and the grounds are more routinely taken care of, this course is not worth attempting.

In reality, a course that is unplayable should be a 1 star or less, but I'm giving it an extra 0.5 due to its high potential.
