Pros:
(2.945 Rating) A simple yet fun lightly wooded course with two tees.
- EDITS - Before I move into the pros I want to point out that the course has gone through several alterations over the years. I looked at the two course maps on DGCR and neither are fully accurate. My nav app also wasn't up to date and that map was different than both map links on DGCR. Be cognizant that my review hole references likely won't match the prior reviews, but it seems that the skill requirements are roughly the same from past years.
- AMENITIES - Prairie has two tees on every hole if I recall correctly. Reds are the shorts, while Whites are the backs. They are all concrete and measure 4 by 10 with a taper to 6 feet in back. Baskets were either newer Mach IIIs or Vs, and all were in great condition. Tee signage was fully updated from the new tweaks and I'll touch on more of that below. Benches are present a few times and the park has the typical items such as shelters and picnic tables.
- NAVIGATION AND SIGNAGE - A new course map was not yet posted for my April 2024 round. Despite this, I had very little issue getting around. I only looked at my navigational app once, after (3), as I strolled over to the wrong tee. There is a sign after (6) indicating that old (7) and old (8) in the far northeast section of the park have moved. It appears that old (9) is now hole (7) and that two new holes have been squeezed in on the back half of the layout. Tee signs are updated and imprinted on the pads. It's just a hole number and distance, but that is really all that's needed as the baskets can be seen on just about every pad. The White layout also has white tipped numbered posts flanking the pads and there are a couple extra navigational cues along the layout.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I scored this aspect a tad higher than the average course. Nice park overall. Nothing exotic, but healthy trees and maintained grounds throughout.
- HOLE VARIETY - I also scored this aspect a hair higher than the average course. All par 3s, I think, but hole (5) is over 400 feet long from the White tees. There's good variation in distances for an all par 3 course, with some 100s, 200s and 300s mixed in. Some holes break right, while others break left. Tree density is mostly lightly wooded, but there are a couple moderately wooded ones and even a heavily wooded shot on new (17). Elevation change is mostly absent, but there are some 10 to 15 foot grade changes. Water comes into play on (18).
- 4 COURSES - I used this pro for all the Graham Creek courses I played. That's right, there are 4 courses at Graham Creek now! I threw three of them. First Pecan, second Preserve and then here. I rated them all at the 3.0 level or better. If we rated places, instead of courses, I'd drop a solid 4.0 on this place. I enjoyed my entire time at Graham Creek.
Cons:
There are no substantial legit cons.
- SOMEWHAT SIMPLISTIC - I found it very difficult to come up with some negatives regarding this course. It's a solid course all the way around and has several modest technical shots where players can take aim at the chains. The one drawback of the Prairie format is that it will read a bit too basic to higher skilled players. A couple shots are completely open and most of the rest are lightly wooded. All this stated, the gameplay as a whole is still better than the average course by a touch when including the hoards of 9-hole courses.
- FINISH FROM PARKING - The parking lot from Basket (18) requires double backing up the fairway and is located about 500 feet away. As one can tell, I am grasping for things to complain about.
Other Thoughts:
Although Prairie has gone through several adjustments over the years, it still delivers a fun disc golf experience for a wide variety of skill levels. For travelers that find themselves in this region, skip the beach for the day and head on over to Graham Creek for a full days' worth of disc golf. Prairie is not the Crown Jewel of Graham Creek, but it'll trump many small town 18ers just by itself. Overall, a solid 3.0 course to me. Prairie reminded me of courses like Youth Park in Tampa Bay, Langan Red in Mobile, Southside in Huntsville Alabama, Northside in Gainesville Florida, Dineen Park in Milwaukee and Quilchena in Vancouver British Columbia. I could probably name a lot more as this is a fairly typical styled course.
