Pros:
Greenville College is…. well, home to a nature trail that apparently once had a playable disc golf course. That is, that's what the course map at the trail head would lead you to think.
But hey, it has a course map! I've given 4s to courses without one of those. That being said, the course map is where the pros for this course end.
Cons:
Let's just take a second to look at this course as if it was in its original condition back in 2011. This is supposed to be a 9-hole course where you play to each basket twice, down the to the end of the trail and back. For tee markers, there are supposed to be tee stones with the hole number that you throw from.
From a course design perspective, even if this course was in great shape, it would be one big safety hazard. The entirety of this course plays down a narrow gravel nature trail, with many of the fairways playing around blind corners according to the map. This would mean throwing around corners on a trail that is open to hikers as well, which can easily lead to injury, or at best a bad impression of disc golf for locals if they do happen to experience a near miss.
Now with that being said, this course is not in great shape. I found only about half the baskets to still be present now, and I did not find a single tee stone on site. With so few baskets left, you can't even play from the last basket at this point. The baskets that are still in place are actually nice models, but they are all either severely tilted, or are giving way to nature with plants growing on them. The best anyone playing this course can do is take a picture of the map at the trailhead, and then just take your best guess as to where you are at on the trail.
Even if you decide to still attempt this course, the course can be an easy one to lose a disc on. The woods lining the trail are thick, and there are plenty of spots with steeper slopes a disc can roll down. I'm all for penalizing errant throws that go off the fairway, but the punishment likely wouldn't fit the crime on much of this course if you get a bad kick off a tree.
Honestly, the trail itself isn't even in great shape. The pictures on this site elude to a nicely kept gravel trail with the grass mowed along it. That is not what I found here. The trail is mostly grown over at this point, with no signs that anyone has stepped foot on this chunk of land recently. I've seen apocalyptic films with better kept settings than this. It takes a lot of work to make nature feel decrepit, but that's the word that comes to mind here.
Other Thoughts:
Overall, Greenville College's Gullie's Nature Trail feels like a complete afterthought. Even getting to the trailhead feels awkward, with just one sign along the road labeled "The Gullies" next to a driveway being your indication you have arrived. I felt like I was trespassing as I parked, and I'm still not convinced that I was not doing so. The course sign says this is a historic trail, but I can find zero information about it online.
This course feels completely abandoned at this point. With a cemetery neighboring much of the trail, I'm betting there are more skeletons on this property than disc golf baskets.
This course is an easy skip if you are driving along 70. I stopped over here after checking out Patriot's Park out down the road, and even that 4-minute drive felt like a waste of gas. Do yourself a favor and use the time you would take to check this course out to play somewhere else instead.
