Jimmy Porter

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Land is really good for disc golf. You've got a 20-25 foot wide creek that is in play a lot – both throwing over and having baskets placed near the water -- and you've got one water carry over a pond; several holes have more than 20-30 feet in elevation changes. This isn't a heavily wooded course, but the trees are well used.
- Two practice baskets.
- Innova baskets.
- Lost disc box; discs go to the Dynamic Discs store a few blocks away, and they call/text you.
- Tee signs are old but informative. They have hole number, distance and a map. The have a next tee indicator. In some instances, the distance to an alternate pin location has been added with stick-on numbers. They also have very clear descriptions of the OB. Oddly, the signs do not list the par.
- Best holes:
2: 307 feet open and downhill with 290 feet needed to clear the creek. Your landing zone is about 25 feet, from the edge of the creek to a sidewalk that is OB and beyond. The first 15 feet after you cross the creek slopes back down to the water, so some shots that clear end up trickling backward into the creek. A big tree sits slightly back/right of the basket.
5: 235 feet through a 25-foot wide gap in trees about halfway. Trees/limbs block any real chance for a big hyzer. The direct path takes you over the edge of the creek, and the basket sits in a stand of about 10 trees.
6: 275 feet straight ahead through a very narrow window or a big RHBH hyzer blind over a walking path and a bridge. You've also got OB sidewalk and beyond.
8: 344/382 feet with a slight RHBH hyzer. Basket is perhaps 10 feet higher in elevation. You've got a 10-12 foot wide fairway in order to avoid weeds chest high or taller on the right that start 15 feet in front of the tee. Left, you've got weeds 8 feet high along the edge of the creek. The fairway opens up about 75 feet off the tee, but the direct line takes you over the creek. The basket is in a stand of trees, requiring a low approach for the final 40 feet.
12: 236/325 feet (although I've never seen the basket in the long position) over the pond with a gentle RHBH hyzer. The water carry is about 200 feet. A tree on the left edge of the pond could easily knock a shot into the water. Another tree 15 feet in front of the tee blocks the RHFH path around the water.
15: 265 feet straight over the creek. The direct line takes about 180 feet to clear the creek. You've got a handful of trees on the far bank of the creek, and the basket sits on the edge of ground that slopes down to the water behind the basket.
16: 208 feet RHFH with the creek 10 feet right of the basket. Trees block the RHBH path.
18: 226 feet RHBH big hyzer around a big tree, out over the creek and fading back to a blind basket. A RHFH path is available, but you've got trees to contend with.

Cons:

- No potable water.
- No map on site.
- No restrooms.
- The walking path comes into play a lot; some of those are blind throws, so there is some danger. At a minimum, you will likely end up waiting on walkers/runners/cyclists.
- Long walk twice related to hole 10. Unless you walk through the creek (it's possible when the water is low), you have to follow the walking path on your right, cross a bridge and cut left along the edge of the creek for about 200 feet to get to the basket. To get to 11, backtrack to the walking path, turn left and walk another 100 or so feet.

Other Thoughts:

- Two bulletin boards at Hole 1 have seen better days. Not only are they blank, they look as if they are about to fall over.
- No. 9 is probably the biggest difference I've seen for two pin positions on the same hole. They start on the same line over 6-8 foot high weeds and the creek. The short position is 255 feet, RHFH with the basket tucked into a stand of trees. The long position is 552 feet. The final 300 feet is mostly open and uphill.
- I've probably played the course more than 100 times; I've had discs in the water on 13 of the 18 holes.
- The water carry pond on No. 12 was bone dry July 31, 2023. I have seen it with no water a couple of other times, but those times you would sink ankle deep in mud trying to walk across it. Not this time.

A big challenge for most players 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a good course with opportunities to score but also several opportunities for disaster if you follow the ob rules. Hazards are in play and easily findable on 15 of the 18 holes. Good mix of short and longer holes depending on the basket placement. More trees than many courses in Texas but also some "open" holes

Cons:

Easy to lose discs, especially on 8 and 9 to the point where they are utterly unretrievable. The pond that is in play on 7 and 12 (and maybe 11) has two snapper turtles in it and you can't see through the muddy water so be careful! Sidewalk on the course will bang up discs and it's easy to find the sidewalk on multiple holes. A few holes are basically unfair, including 9 for weaker armed players as well as 6. If 10 and 4 have the hard basket location they can be brutal too.

Other Thoughts:

overall a fun course, one of my favorites in the area, but infinite discs and the local dynamic disc store are making good money off of me on account of the number of discs i lose here.

Decent, but Busy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Will challenge you to take some left to right lines on drives, also encourages low, straight drives. Good challenges for intermediate player
-Made good use of the creek as an obstacle
-Decent amount of trees, made what use they could of them

Cons:

-Walking sidewalk cuts through majority of holes, and it's a busy park
-Busy road borders 4 holes
-Too challenging for beginner
-If you play aggressive, you can lose some discs
-Course does not drain well. If it's rained within the last few weeks, probably best to hold off

Other Thoughts:

I have to knock at least a star off if the course has a walking sidewalk running through it. It takes away from the flow of the game. And in this case, it's a busy park. I saw at least 6 separate people walking today, and it was hot and in the middle of the day. One person was walking through a hole I was throwing on and wasn't even using the sidewalk.

A few issues I'd consider "maintenance" problems:
The tee on hole 6 seems like a disaster waiting to happen. I think originally there was supposed to be a gap in the trees to drive through directly in front of you, but they've grown and closed the gap. The only line seemingly to take is a hyzer that starts right and breaks left, which means you're throwing blind INTO a sidewalk and possible people you can't see. This is my biggest complaint of the course. I guess the workaround is not to go alone and have a spotter. Why not clear those trees in front of the tee though?
Hole 10: The basket is on the other side of a creek, but the only bridge is way off to the right. I don't understand why they don't put a small bridge which would link the tee to the basket.

Other than that, I'd say the course is alright. It's probably a little too challenging for me to play frequently personally, but I could see how it'd be more fun for someone who's more skilled. I plan on playing this occasionally b/c it forces me to strategize more and play more specific lines than somewhere like Greenbelt or L.L Woods, but it's also going to be a more frustrating experience than those courses..

Meh 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 17, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging
Good place to practice against O.B.

Cons:

Crowded
Lot's of non disc golfers slows down the game
Good place to get wet, since you are bound to throw at least 1 in the water somewhere
Tee boxes a little small
Too open and subject to wind

Other Thoughts:

Kind of dumb to put so many of the holes by a busy walking / biking trail
There are also others wanting to use the park for softball, Frisbee, kickball, throwing around a football etc.
Every time, I wanted to let one rip seemed someone was walking around the corner or near where you throw
If you play aggressive and not a pro, you are bound to throw some out of bounds and maybe into some water. I will come back during the middle of the day after it warms up too cold recently to go fishing in the creek for discs.

Updated to 3 star. I have been back a few times and it's an okay course and convenient. On subsequent returns there is alot less foot traffic conflicts.

Beware of water 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 6, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Beautiful park
-Trees around baskets provide for unique and challenging up shots
-Great for intermediate players

Cons:

-Beginners will lose a lot of plastic
-Short teeboxes
-Not much variability off of the tee

Other Thoughts:

Difficulty (3/5): This course has slightly above average difficulty, especially for beginners, because of the water. When I first played this course I was incredibly new to the game, and was stressed out on almost every shot because of the threat of losing my discs in water. This caused me to play overly safe and add a ton of strokes to my score. When I played again more recently, I was much more confident in each shot I would be taking and was willing to take my normal lines as if the water wasn't there. I still found my fair share of trees and shallow water a couple of times, but having a little more experience under my belt made the course far more manageable.

Maintenance (3/5): The baskets were in great shape. The teeboxes were in good shape but often a little shorter than I would have preferred. Grass and brush were trimmed low. Tee signs were extremely faded.

Variability (3/5): The majority of obstacles on this course are from the water. There are definitely trees, but for the most part they're on the edge of fairways and therefore don't force different lines but rather punish you if you don't throw straight. That, combined with my noodle arm (I can't throw more than 300' consistently), meant that on at least half of the holes I was driving as hard as I could straight down the middle. An additional 4 or 5 holes were straight down the middle but within my driving range, so I needed to focus more on accuracy. A couple of holes used the water very well to make you question whether you wanted to go for it or layup. All of that being said, there was usually clusters of trees around the basket that made approach shots interesting. The tee shots were less varied than most courses, but the approach shots were more varied than most courses.

Flow/Experience (4/5): Going from 9-10 and 10-11 can be a bit confusing the first time, but not much. The hole layout really makes sense even for a first time player. This was a really stressful course to play as a beginner, as I mentioned before, but much more enjoyable as an intermediate. I imagine it'll be even better with more skill. A lot of pretty views and fairly secluded disc golf.

Technical if windy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Very technical course
-A few wide open holes to see how far you can throw
-Well thought out lay-up areas for those of us not blessed with huge arms
-Water hazards that aren't too daunting to get your discs out of except the pond
-A few elevation changes to keep things interesting in the beginning of the round especially
-Well marked hole locations for each hole with approximate distances
-Benches at the tee pad for most holes

Cons:

-Make sure you have some overstable discs in your bag or you will go swimming a lot, especially if it's a windy day
-While the basket locations are marked on the signs, some of the locations of the holes change depending on the season, so it can take some scouting
-On the weekends, the park can get a little busy so be careful blind throwing
-Some of the tee pads are a little uneven, and the pad at hole 6 is almost treacherous
-If you throw your disc in the very small pond on 12, good luck getting it out thanks to zero visibility
-Don't be fooled by any rock bridges you see, they are cosmetic and the rocks will move

Other Thoughts:

-There are no bathrooms on the course at all. The closest is at the softball complex across the street

Water water everywhere 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Nice easy to navigate layout
-Teepads in good shape
-Nice variety of holes
-Water in play on almost every hole
-Very distinct holes
-Flow from hole to hole is excellent, nice rapid pace of play

Cons:

-The fairways are fairly open, with most of the "wooded" description coming in from guardian tree placement around the pins
-Some of the rough, especially on holes 5,6,8,10 is pretty dense.
-Water in play on almost every hole, most of the creek is shallow but there are definitely some deep spots that require more than just removing your shoes to retrieve your disc. And then you have the pond on 12.
-Walking path weaves through the course and there are some near blind shots on 4 and 6 where you have a chance of hitting somebody
-Hole 14 tees of right next to a busy road and I cold see a lefty grip locking a drive and causing a big problem.

Other Thoughts:

Jimmy Porter is an excellent example of a municipal multi-use park course. The design incorporates a wide variety of shots and approaches and uses a single creek to introduce OB and risk reward type shots on a number of holes.

The design of this course really maximized the terrain, landscape and water features to its full potential, resulting in a course where each hole feels distinct and memorable.

Standout holes for me were:
Hole 2 - Nice elevate tee with creek OB right in front of the pin
Hole 4 - Curve your drive around the base of the hill and then an upshot into a wooded section guarding the pin
Hole 10 - Pretty wide expand of creek and rough in front of pin which is tucked in the woods. Decent fairway before you get to the OB if you want to play it safe and layup.
Hole 12 - Hyzer line over a nice sized pond
Hole 15 - Drive over a wider, boulder strewn section of the creek with the pin on the opposite bank

All in all, the water really adds both challenge and an extra level of scenery to a nice municipal park layout. While the fairways are mostly open, the pin placements have you still needing to make a technical upshot on most holes.

good park course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-great use of the creek and the limited elevation
-a variety of different distances, lines, and degrees of woods
-concrete tees and finally has new signs for the (relatively) new layout
-good bridges to cross the creek
-creek is shallow and clear, discs easily retrieved

Cons:

-old baskets in okay condition
-no stand out holes
-some of the posted distances seem off, especially hole 14 (looks like over 500' to me)

Other Thoughts:

Jimmy Porter has been around for a long time and it is not hard to see why it is a popular course. It looks easy with lots of reachable pins but there are just enough trees, water hazards, and sidewalk OB that it is much more challenging than it looks. I usually leave here eager to come back and beat my score by several strokes!

With 13 holes with water in play and 7 with an OB sidewalk, there are plenty of opportunities to take penalty strokes and it makes for great score separation. Some may find it too punitive but I like it. The OB is clear and good shots shouldn't unluckily end up OB.

There are 2 elevated tees (2 and 6), 2 large bombs (14 and 17), 1 throw across a small pond (12), and several holes with baskets nestled into protected woods (4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13). The holes are mostly short (half under 300') but the variety of terrain features keeps it interesting. That said, there are not any holes that really stand out for me as signature holes.

Jimmy Porter is right down the street from Greenbelt Park and they make a decent pair though they are similar courses. Jimmy Porter is definitely the better of the two. While there are plenty of better courses in the area, this is a solid option with replay value and decent fun factor.

Well laid out 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice variety of distance.

-Well thought out design- uses water as a thoughtful obstacle.

-Baskets in wooded areas when possible so wind putting isn't so much of a factor.

-Discs that end up in water are generally retrievable.

-Nice tees and signs.

Cons:

-I spent a fair amount of time waiting for runners to clear (the Carrollton Purple trail bisects the course) and this was on a Monday morning. I imagine weekends are worse.

Other Thoughts:

-Watch out for hole 6... if you fade too far left you will land in a swampy mess overgrown with tall reeds. It was only by the grace of the DGGods that I found my disc.

-Compared to the other course that is close (Greenbelt) this place is more fun IMHO.

Bum Wrap 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 15, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Requires a number of different shots
- Majority of holes allow for multiple approach angles
- Creek forces you to be tactical, but doesn't hinder your angles
- Course was well kept and had decent flow
- Holes 2, 3, 6 and 10 were 'signature' type holes that make this course worth playing again

Cons:

- Tee signs could be better
- Course map at hole #1 would also make this course more easily navigable
- The course does play across a walking/jogging path which requires the player to be constantly aware of foot traffic

Other Thoughts:

In reading the previous reviews, this course gets a bum wrap for eating discs. I didn't see this to be the case at all. While water is present on most every hole, it only serves as a boundary and not really an obstacle. Without the water, this course would be fairly mundane and lack any sort of challenge. The lack of length on the course is offset by the strategic factor presented by the creek. Overall a good course and worth playing on a semi-regular basis. Not overly difficult and can be played fairly quickly.

Parking lot was abnormally hard to find.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a great great course. It has a great layout, great flow, good elevation changes and it really challenges you to think about what you are throwing and how. The major issues with the course are that the dirt tees are horrid and a injury waiting to happen! This course eats discs! A river/creek runs through the entire thing so be careful, if you throw bad, short, or slightly off target you will have to search for you disc for ages and HOPE to find it, and if you play here regularly the money loss in plastic will add up.
BUT, dont let this scare you away this is a great course and if you are in the area play it!

"Disc Eater" 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 11, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I just started playing the game in July '11. The better I get, the more I enjoy playing this course. A variety of shots are needed to effectively play the full 18. On some holes, a back hand just wont do.The course is unforgiving and demands precision shots. If you happen to throw your disc in a hazard (which is highly likely), there is a greater than zero chance you'll come out with a few more discs than you started with. Give me a call if you see one with a paw.

Cons:

My buddy and I affectionately call this course the "disc eater". Between the two of us, we've lost 6 since July '11. Your first victory is getting through the 18 with all the discs you started with. You can see moderate improvements being made to the course over the past month. If a few more bushes and tree limbs were trimmed back and concrete tee boxes were installed, this course would rivals the best in the area.

Other Thoughts:

If you have some skill and can throw without fear, this course is sure to entertain.
