Kilcona - The Lakes 2016 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful setting, many picturesque views with well mowed fairways and quaint bridges over the many ponds.
Well designed course with a good mix of medium to long holes. Water involved in 4 holes but only one where you must go over (long tees). New signage! Excellent short tee course as well with very different looks. Spend an afternoon playing 36! One of the most beautiful courses I've played (out of hundreds)

Cons:

No tee pads and the tee areas are a bit chewed up now. You must look for the tee marker post then the tee is within 15 feet. (posts are near other mowing obstructions for ease of maintenance) Dog owners that don't follow the rules. (but their dogs seem to give a shit) After rain can be soggy for a day or two

Other Thoughts:

This course was begging for a recent review. I've been playing this course since it was created and it has changed a lot in the last few years. If you are in Manitoba it is a must do. Hell even if you're in Minnesota add La Barriere Park's 36 holes and make a weekend of it!

Excellent, Well-Maintained Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Use of Trees: holes were sculpted around trees to produce a variety of shot requirements
-Maintenance: Baskets were in great condition and lawn was well mowed
-Scenery: Course is surrounded by beautiful shrubbery, trees, and ponds
-Accessibility: Easy to reach course of main roads
-Utilization of space: Holes were spread such that there was great variety and the holes were not too close together

Cons:

-Lack of Cement teepads: Grass was hard to get traction on, and tees were difficult to find at times with only wood markers
-Lack of Signage: Hard to follow course at times
-Baskets: While they were in great condition, the grey color was hard to see from a distance, and they were not marked with hole number
-Lack of Parking: While the map indicates a parking lot, there is nothing close to the start of the course
-Non-DG Specific Park: Plenty of dogs and walkers in the park, constantly having to make sure walking paths are clear

Other Thoughts:

A great course, and definitely worth a bit of a drive to play. Hole 6 (over the pond) is a ton of fun, and the rest of the course is wonderful as well. A must-play if you are in the area!

so close to perfection 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Well designed shots
-Nice mix of long and techincal shots

Cons:

-No signs
-Tee boxes are just a piece of wood. Could not find tee box for #3, #8 and #13 so guessed on position from map.
-Several long walks between holes

Other Thoughts:

This course is so close to awesome, but the negs definitely hold it back.
I played this course in August 2010 so the weather was nice, but should have brought the bug spray. Not sure what the availablity of the course is in the winter.
The course needs some better defined tee boxes and signs; even with the map it was hard to find the tee boxes. I could not find the tees for #3, #8 or #13. For #3 I played just left of the bench; #8 played even with the island; and #13 up on the hill played from the trail intersection.
I will definitely play this course again when I am back in Winnipeg, but will make sure to allow more time to enjoy.
Oh and if you are a novice/recreational player, beware of hole 16, 301ft accross water to the basket that sits within 30ft of the water, very tough for us players whose great throws are just over 300ft.
