Beautiful Course in a Great Location 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The La Mirada Regional Park is located on the back side of huge park in La Mirada, California. This course is one of the events on the European Tour and is a great course to play. This course is obviously maintained very well and is one of my favorites. Day use at any time I think until after dusk. Every hole pretty much plays on luscious grass with walking paths throughout the course. Hole 1 is a downhill hole that plays straight to the baskets not much to it but it is pretty fun to rip a backhand down this hole.

This course rests under a moderately hilly to lightly wooded course. Pine trees are shading most of the holes as well as some shrubs.
Various pin locations on this course make it fun if you live close. Most course I play they keep it in one position and it stays there throughout the year. Great hardware on this course.

You have got color coded signs and concrete tee pads. Discatchers were added to this course when it was built and make it great. When I went it was pretty busy and I can understand that because this course is very nice. I had a great time hear and it really made me work on my backhand and forehand with all the mandos.

There is a nice little pro shop where they sell some discs. I always like to see a pro shop on these kind of courses. I have played the front 18 and let me tell you it was not very much different.

The front definitely felt more open with a bunch of pedestrians and walkers. I think there is more trails on the front side so you definitely get more picnickers and people fishing.

Some of my favorite holes are: Hole 1, Hole 6 and Hole 15. Most of this course plays by the back side near a busy road. I really liked the pro shop and all the environment around hear. I would like to see them not make so many of the holes near the road on the back side.

This course is great I would reccomend it to anyone who has not played here. Hole 6 is my all time favorite with the extremely small island green that they need to take out. This hole is great to rip a backhand on or forehand. There is a wide variety of shots and is a great place to have a stress free round.

There is a wide variety of shots as well as things to do in this park. There is a playground and workout area near the front 18. A big pool and splash pad not in the park but neighboring it. I like this course a lot but it is a little busy especially on the other side.

Cons:

Holes 9 through 12 are very close to a busy road and side walk. I like these holes but it is very easy to get your disc flattened by a car. Some of the holes are a little muddy due to over watering. A lot of courses I have played do that and I think they should tone it down.

I do recommend the course map on the links and files page. This course is a little tricky to navigate around if it is your first time. This course seems almost the same compared to the other course on the front 18. Both of these courses offer a great experience though. Not much of a first timer course though. It is fun if you just want to get outside but it is not very beginner friendly.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course is amazing. I loved coming here and I hope to come back soon. If you feel ambitious and want to go 36 holes it is very doable. I have not done it but I would like to do it sometime. There is lots of OB such as roads, french drains and paths. On hole 6 I really want them to take out the island green. This hole is so hard to put it on the green from a good 150 ft. Front 18 was nice as well I would like to do it again.

What makes this course top notch is the hardware I think. Great Discatcher baskets are great as well as pretty big concrete tee pads. This course needs hardly any updating. All of the hole pay on grass which is nice but you will not get any skip action. One thing I liked about this course is there is not to many people and is very fun to play.

The other half 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

It would be a crime to come here and only play one of the courses. So here we go with the back. I'm going to act like you're only reading this review, so I'll repeat some points.

Equipment: It's similar to the front. The baskets are all in prime condition and the teepads are long enough and grippy enough. Nothing to complain about here. This side of the course doesn't feel as well traveled by pedestrians, but the baskets are still in great condition. I'd almost expect more damage and vandalism back here, but you just don't find it.

Navigation: The teepads all have signs that detail the hole. You get an idea of the pin placements, the distances, and the OB and obstacles. They don't give you any suggested lines, but I'm finding that I prefer that. Why should they tell us how to play the course? Half the fun is us figuring it out for ourselves. Oh, and a good majority of the baskets had something pointing you toward the next basket. Always appreciated.

Design: The design here is pretty solid too. You get some uphill and downhill shots. Some more "technical" lines. Some open looks. Some blind pins. Some rollers. Some air shots. There's some OB to take into account too. This course really does take full advantage of the property.

Cons:

Equipment: Really no cons to list. The sprinklers drenching the 1-4 fairways were kind of annoying, but how else do you keep a course this green? It was my own fault for playing in the morning.

Navigation: While not as bad as the front course, this one does need some better navigation aides. Yes, we have UDisc. Yes, we use it. But a map would be helpful, and possibly some next tee signs on the longer walkouts. I did get turned around between 3 and 4, and especially between 10 and 11. There really isn't room for a hole between those, but it's not the best walk out.

Design: This course was likely designed by the same person who did the front and they did a good job with the property provided. Some of the holes do feel like filler though. 11-14 definitely come to mind. Just fairly short holes without too much in your way, and all of them play closer to the street and parking lot than you might like. In fact, a lot of holes play too close to the street and parking lot. But at least that gets them in your head I suppose.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this was a very enjoyable round. I threw a crazy get out of trouble roller on 4 that was quite possibly the best shot I've ever thrown. That alone made the full 18 worthwhile. We're choosing to ignore that I drove my tee shot into the ground by the sprinklers and needed to get out of trouble in the first place... We're also going to ignore the con that the street and parking lot come into play so much, because even those holes are still just challenging enough. Bringing trees, slopes, and OB into play. This was my first experience with California disc golf, and it was a great choice to start out. I prefer the more technical courses of the NW, but playing defined lines and manicured fairways is a pleasant way to spend a day.

Lesser of Two, But Still a Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Great course design, allows for lots of different shots. Plenty of "grip it and rip it" holes, as well as holes that are more technical and require some finesse.

- Serene setting. The course is very well-maintained, grassy, and plays like a ball golf course.

- Cement tees with great signage on every hole.

- Pro shop on site. Has a small quantity of discs for sale, as well as cold drinks and snacks.

- Another immaculate course on the same property if you're up for two-round day!

Cons:

- Parts of the property play along a neighborhood road, so be careful (it's OB, anyways!).

- The neighboring school often has activities that can get in the way. Last time I played there were groups of cross country runners cutting across multiple fairways throughout the course.

- It's a public park, so there are occasionally park patrons that are oblivious to the DG course and can get in the way. It's easy enough to get them to move, though.

- The start and finish of this course are a good ways from the parking lot.

- A few holes play near a waterpark, which can be pretty loud and distracting.

- Several holes play right next to each other, with fairways essentially overlapping.

- Navigation. Like the other course on site, it is occasionally tricky to find your way to the next hole. If no locals were around I would never have found a few of the holes.

- Not particularly different from the lakeside course.

Other Thoughts:

Like the other course on site, the backside at La Mirada is a highly enjoyable course. Both courses are well-designed, serene, top-tier disc golf experiences. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and make time to play them both. If you only have time for one, though, I'd recommend the lakeside course.

Fantastic course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-La Mirada Backside is located on the back side of the huge, beautiful La Mirada Park. The rolling, green grass hills and mature trees make it a one-of-a-kind course in Southern California. What this course lacks in lake views, it makes up for in fun challenging shots.

-Some outstanding holes:
Hole 1, a long downhill shot with both a hyzer and anhyzer route.
Hole 3, a shorter downhill shot with the basket perched on a hillside under a huge, flowering tree.
Hole 17, a long anhyzer shot with the basket in a bowl.

-All shots are required. Touch shots, crush shots, hyzers, anhyzers, and rollers are all key to a good score.

-Interference from pedestrians is minimal, unlike the Lakeside course.

-Excellent tee signs showing all pin placements, as well as OB and mandatories.

-New Innova Discatcher baskets.

-A well-stocked pro shop, with all the latest Innova releases.

-Another wonderful, 18 hole course on site.

Cons:

-It's rather easy to throw into the road and/or the parking lot on several holes on the back nine. Three baskets are located within a short distance of parked cars.

-Most of the tee pads were excellent. However, three share space with a pedestrian path and are uneven and slick.

-The first tee is about a half mile from the parking lot. I suggest Hole 13 become the new Hole 1, as it's only 50 feet away.

-No practice baskets.

Other Thoughts:

-It's a lot of fun to throw the same shots seen on CCDG.

-The course routing must have been changed at some point. The last few holes on the map are in a different position.

-This is a splendid course, one of my favorites in Southern California. With two fabulous courses on site, this is certainly a must-play if you're in the Los Angeles area.

Excellent use of vacant area behind baseball fields 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

More trees in play than it's front 18 counterpart. Very well designed, O.B. And mandos make open shots more difficult. Every inch is used to perfection here. Very easy to navigate with no hold ups. A lot less crowded than lakeside course. The desciption says this is the best course in SoCal, I have only played these two La Mirada course in SoCal, but I can really see why they are considered to be the best. This course is also much less crowded than the frontside. Much more wooded also.

Cons:

Road comes into play a lot, with more trees a bad kick is a looming possibility. Tee pads are not as obvious sometimes as they are on the front 18. Before coming here I wondered why it was two 18ers and not a 36er, the two courses are very far apart, and it is a long walk in the heat to get to the next course.

Other Thoughts:

Bring a map for this course, it isn't that hard to navigate but better safe than sorry.

Backside La Mirada! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

I've played the front 18 at La Mirada quite a few times, but I've always been told that you HAVE to try the bask-side too. That's why when I had a few hours to kill one morning, I decided to play all 36 and finally get a round in on the back 18. I started by playing the familiar front side to get warmed up, and I'm glad I did!

The back at La Mirada is a longer, more technical course than the front. The front has more hills, and more baskets sitting on hills, but the back does a good job of making you feel like you're not on a typical socal course. First off, it's quiet. Unlike the front where you have joggers, homeless, people fishing, and other randoms... the back was almost entirely disc golfers. It made the round feel more private, and that's a rare thing around here.

My favorite stretch was holes 1-4. This felt like world class disc golf. The hills, the manicured grass, the lines... it was awesome. Holes 5-9 wind through a wooded section (not east coast wooded, but more open), and holes 10-18 wind back around some baseball fields toward the pro shop.

You'll throw just about every shot in your bag out here. Big hyzers, placement straight shots, annys, and I even threw a couple of thumbers over blind hills. It was fun!

Each hole had a concrete teepad (or shared a sidewalk), mandos were clearly marked, and all the baskets were in decent shape or better.

Add in he fact that La Mirada has a pro shop, bathrooms, and another 18 holes on site... and you're gonna have a good time out here.

Summary:

- Concrete pads
- Nice baskets
- Pro shop
- Practice area
- Two 18 hole courses on site
- Variety of shots and lines
- Variety of distances
- Elevation!
- Well maintained park
- Fun factor!

Cons:

My first gripe about the back 9 is the layout. It took me a while to find hole 1 (even with the map), and once I got going I found the actual layout differed from the map I had in my hand. This probably isn't an issue for locals who know their way around, but for a newbie out-of-towner like me... I was lost. Some of the baskets are close together so I had to figure out what target went with what hole, and this required me to walk ahead a few times to scout.

Hole 10 seemed out of place between the parking lot and the road. Another one (maybe 14 or 15?) was right up against the parking lot as well. One bad throw and you can smash a car pretty easily.

Finally the walk from 1 and 18 to the car is looooong. Had I known this before I started I probably would have parked closer, but it's a hike.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, this facility is a must visit for any disc golfer in the area. Both the front 18 and the back 18 are incredible courses. Against popular opinion, my favorite was probably the front. It just fits my game better I think. Even so, the back is a monster. Park in the lot next to the tennis courts if you want to visit the pro shop, or maybe park in the north lot near the baseball fields if you strictly want to play the back. Have fun!

Great course, a moment of nature in LA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Almost nobody but disc golfers, a few walkers etc. Trees, hills, small valley that has a wow I am not in LA feel, clean park, grassy City park for rollers, clean park, variety of backhand and flick, one 'roller hole' ( hole 6, nice tees, free. Challenging yet doable for an older player like me.

Cons:

No water fountains on course, bathrooms only at tee 4 and they were closed and kind of run down.

Other Thoughts:

Loved it, played it 3 days on a row while staying in Garden Grove.on business. Locals told me I had to play this instead of the front course so I did. Will be back for sure. A hawk nailed a pigeon in mid-air at hole 4 right over head, Closest thing to an Ace I will ever see on that hole.

Catch you on the Backside 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The front 9 on the backside of LaMa is some of my favorite SoCal golf. There are plenty of elevation changes, trees to challenge your lines, and distance to challenge your arm. It flows smoothly and is very well maintained. In general I think the majority of the Backside at LaMa is a more picturesque than most courses.

I like that the backside is more secluded than the front. There's never really a crowd so often I can throw my entire bag on quite a few baskets.

The proshop is great and has a good disc selection (when they get new shipments in). There are facilities readily available.

Cons:

They changed the layout by removing the original holes 1 and 2 and splitting a couple of the longer holes in half. I think 5 and 15 might be the ones they cut in half.

I understand why this had to be done for safety reasons (children's playground near basket 2), so it's not that much of a con.

If you're someone who can throw a par or +1 or +2 you'll be alright, but if you're somewhat new or don't quite have control of your shots then a few holes are going to present very challenging approaches. You may end up throwing into a crowded parking or a street. These are holes even a seasoned golfer knows can be trouble.

I'm not the biggest fan of the new 15 which plays just beyond the softball field fence because there's a lot of ball players and cars. The hole itself is easy, but it's a very busy area.

Other Thoughts:

This course is definitely worth the visit. If you have a full day, or can jam through in a half day, playing all 36 at LaMa is well worth it.

Excellent course!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 17, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent hole variations!! Variety of shots needed. Makes for some challenging rounds. Some elevation changes, lots of shade and grass. Cool locals. Drinking water and restrooms available, as well as a pro-shop. Some nice tunnel/hallway type shots. I enjoy bird-watching, and see a lot out there (swallows, woodpeckers, black phoebes, doves, orioles, forktailed flycatchers, robins and who knows what else). All baskets and tee pads are in good shape. Hole markers with nice hole diagram at each tee box. Easy layout to follow.

Cons:

No longer any par 4's. A few holes play near a parking lot, so errant shots could hit cars. I've stepped in a few squirrel holes and almost turned my ankle, good thing I wear high top hiking shoes.

Other Thoughts:

I play here all the time, and I love it. They've recently moved a few tee boxes away from sidewalks, evidently for the safety of pedestrians. Holes 1 and 2 no longer exist. We now start on what used to be hole #3. 1 and 2 have been replaced by splitting the old par four 7th into two par 3's and same with the old par four 15th. The back 18 is much less crowded than the lakeside 18. There's long holes and a few short holes, maybe an ace waiting to happen? I rarely start on hole 1, usually warming up on the back 9 with my start and finish being there. This course is always worth playing!!!

Much less crowded with parkgoers, but felt longer than the front 18. I more or less like the Front and Back 18 equally. Too many holes played this day to point out some specific ones, but Hole 11 stuck out in my mind. Its the narrowest strip of land that I've seen a disc golf hole on and I like it alot. -The elevation changes were awesome. Hole one is a nice downhill shot, hole 2 was a tricky uphill shot with a mando, hole three was hilly to flat, etc...
-This is the first course I've been to with a pro-shop, I though that was pretty cool.
-Short walks between pins and pads.
-Friendly locals
-lots of tree's that enhance play not just a bunch of overgrown disc thieves.
-Great set-up

Playing from hole 5 to 6 I got confused as to which pin I was supposed to shoot at since there were a number of baskets around and I couldn't see any numbers. The placard didn't help much because it was facing the wrong direction, but luckily some locals helped me out though.
-Be careful when you tee off on 1, 2, and 3 especially because you end up throwing right next to another tee-pad.
-It was super muddy on the day I was there, I almost fell a number of times on my upshots.

Other Thoughts:

Great course, I only had time to play one round (I also had my wife, daughter, and father-in-law in tow which detracted a little bit) and I would have loved a few more trips around. I'm hoping to be able to make it back and try the front 18 soon. Do yourself a favor though either print off a course map before you go or pay the 25 cents to get one at the pro shop it will make your first round a little more relaxing (I wish I had done that).

Ballin' Back 18 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 2, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Absolutely maximized course layout for space available, if not a bit tight at times. Nice and mild elevation changes, with a fair amount of sidehill lies as well. I absolutely loved and was blown away by hole #11, which I have dubbed "The Janokowski Hole". Not just because I'm a Raiders fan, and #11 is Jano's number, but the drive is literally like trying to hit a 64yd field goal and keep it between the hashmarks. The #11 hole layout borderlines between: mad-genius, crazy ballsy & utterly stupid. How many drives have been chucked directly into oncoming traffic here??

Cons:

Some blind drives had me aiming at the wrong baskets. #3 sign is missing. Could have a few more anhyser drives.

Other Thoughts:

Comparing the Front 18 to Back 18:
Well, I did my best to play and review the Back as its own course, but it's near impossible not to consider the Front during the round. Both courses are immaculately maintained, and while the Front is definitely hillier, it doesn't have some of the the sidehill effects of the Back. A couple of things I liked about the Back vs Front are: less morning dew on the grass (presumably due to lack of lake in the middle), denser amount of trees (holes 4-9), and the incomparable hole #11. Overall, tho, it's really no comparison; the Front is more epic than the Back!
==================
Uniqueness: A- (for a course that surrounds some softball fields, it's done VERY well)
Difficulty: A- (mild elevation changes; great amount and use of trees; lots of OB)
Fun Factor: A- (some really nice approach shots on #4, #5, #9, #18)
Aesthetics: A- (perfectly maintained; parking lots & softball fences provide OB, but take away from beauty)

Overall: A-

Tough call which is better, the front or the back... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 2, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-18 Holes (at least it's supposed to be)
-Free!
- Great variety! Short holes, looooong holes, technical shots, uphill, downhill, everything!
- Much less foot traffic than the front 18
-A great course to just let loose and let those discs fly!

Cons:

When I went (1/2/10) there were several holes that had been removed for one reason or another, so I didn't get to play all 18, I believe it was more like 12 or 13. A local said that too many people had been playing in the street or hitting cars in the parking lot and had to remove them. Hopefully they'll be replaced somewhere again to make it a true 18. Even with these holes missing though, it was still beautiful.
-Once again (I mentioned this in my review of the front 18), one group of guys that just couldn't wait to throw.

Other Thoughts:

If you look at my review of the front 18, you'll see the one main problem I had, and that was the people. Same thing on this side. There literally couldn't have been more than 4 or 5 groups playing, and the one directly behind us were throwing as soon as we got to where our first drives had landed, sometimes not even waiting that long. Its bad enough to throw at adults, but my 8 year old son was with us (and no, he wasn't slowing us down) and they came very close to hitting us on several occasions without ever hearing a "Fore" or even a "Hey, watch out." I didn't seem to see a lot of signage as to where the next tee was, but there was a sign showing the multiple pin placements and distances. The guides we were with though were very helpful though, and were aware of the missing holes. I'm not sure how long they've been gone, but I really hope they are brought back soon so I can go play again. A great course through and through, and when you combine it with the front 18, this park is a must play!

Pros:

-The more secluded of the two courses at the La Mirada complex.
-Very nice use of the hills and trees in the area.
-Most elevation change of any park course in the area.
-2 putting baskets near the pro shop.
-Mostly DG Exclusive, much quieter vibe here than on the front 18.
-Some incredibly long bombs, and some technical throws too.
-Course flows pretty logically
-Lots of privacy, at least for the first 9. There always seem to be less people playing this course.
-Extremely long holes are both followed by shorter holes, which is kind of a relief. Hole 6 is so long that people behind us regularly begin playing it before we finish, but its totally cool because the hole is so long.

Cons:

-The people of La Mirada LOVE running over discs. GET IT QUICKLY if you throw it in any street!
-Holes 11-16 have been pulled, most likely due to car/pedestrian danger.

Other Thoughts:

While not really a complete course anymore, the back '18' at La Mirada provide more seclusion and a more serious game than the front half. The back play in a largely unused portent of the park. Moderately wooded and quite hilly especially for a city park, the opportunities are endless for the holes that exist.

Hole 7 is very long, along an OB fence, and should really be a par 4. La Mirada Disc Club's website says its a par 4. It also says that 18 is a par 4.

Since the middle pins have been removed, I have seen people playing 'unofficial' or 'old' versions of the course, whatever they want to call it. I call it getting in the way of people playing the intended layout, and I am seeing more and more people in the middle of fairways when they are not supposed to be. Watch out when throwing, and ESPECIALLY watch out when playing unofficial holes ;)

Apparently the back 18 is still considered 18, the website indicates that you play holes 2 thru 5 a second time around, then 18 again from an alternate tee. Seeing as how the course is already busy I am curious to see if this actually works.

Went to play a rain round on a Friday, and there was a track meet taking up the ENTIRE park. It was impossible to play, so we left. This was at about 3:30pm. Just FYI, you might want to call the pro shop before you go on a Friday afternoon.

While I REALLY like this course, and still believe that it coupled with the front 18 course is definitely a destination, I have to be honest and say I am not visiting it nearly as much since part of the course was removed. Other than that, the quality of the remaining holes, tees, and signs, are all wonderful and is really great park disc golf.
