Playing in the time of COVID 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

I dont know if it's just the fact that we haven't been able to play in so long due to parks being closed or that I got to check off a new course but this course was amazing!

Great use of terrain; up hill shots, some nice long downhill shots, through the woods and across open meadows.

I really appreciated the well thought out lines as much I enjoyed the beautiful landscape!

This is a park well suited to both the novice and pro a-like. two t-pads on every hole, and I believe there might have even been multiple pin locations possible.

Cons:

Mud!- Played May 22, 2020, hadn't had any substantial rain in days yet there was still some pretty deep mud bogs and wet areas to traverse. Early spring could get pretty messy

Other Thoughts:

-Someone had taken the time to laminate direction arrows to the baskets indicating next hole, very helpful! Probably a good idea to get something permanent in place.

-Still have no idea how to park by hole 1. Google took us to the main entrance so we started from the first pad along the path, hole 11. No sense walking to hole 1, it would be a slog.

-I didn't see washrooms onsite or any stores particularly close by

-Big shoutout to my buddy Sean for the ace on hole 6!! it was beauty RHBH flex line smashing through the trees into the basket!

Really looking forward to going back later in the summer to see the course in full bloom!

Very enjoyable 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

A little bit of everything comes with this layout. The front nine is a little tighter and more in the woods. There are a couple of blind tee shots (at least from the long tees) on the front, and a good variety of shots needed. I even had to break out the roller on the 7th, and the dog-leg 9th was a stiff right turn! The back 9 was more open, other than the 10th, but the holes still had a little bite, with baskets placed directly behind trees and bushes, or in clusters of trees, and the elevation changes seemed more abundant.
Not too much foot traffic through the park. Only spotted a couple of dog-walkers. Passed a few pavilions and quite a few picnic tables, so likely the park's use picks up on the weekend..

Cons:

Not too much wrong with the course itself. Had more difficulty with finding where exactly to park to get into the course. I talked to someone who had played the course prior to me, who advised to turn off Hwy 54 at the "day entrance" to the park, and cross through a tunnel under the highway to get to the first tee. The marked park entrance was gated, and would have left a monster walk to the first tee, if you wanted to play the course in order, instead of starting at the closer 12th tee. And a little more direction is needed to get players from the 8th basket to the 9th tee. More on that....

Other Thoughts:

The fairways were very well manicured, and there were signs on each basket with arrows directing you towards the next tee.
Now, as for the trek from the 8th to the 9th.. The arrow on the basket has a comment below it directing you to "follow the path", which I thought I did. A local told me as I wandered, that the path wasn't the paved path I was on, but was in fact a little muddy trail through the woods I didn't even notice! Careful or you'll walk 20 unneeded minutes in the wrong direction! Now that I've played it once, I'll have no trouble. A fun day out on the course, all in all.

Out of stater 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

A well layed out course. Mostly 2 sets of tee pads. Reds seamed/looked good for beginners and whites were right up my alley. Loved the mix of shots and some open holes and a few wooded holes.

Cons:

Wet, wet, wet..... must of played right when weather was bad a few days before. Could use arrows on baskets to direct you to where the next tee pad was. And the trek between 8 and 9 is far. Better signage here would of helped.

Other Thoughts:

Would love to play this course when the ground is dryer. If I am ever up this way again. You know I'll be back.

Awesome Par 3/4 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- An amazing new par 3/4 course in Caledonia, Ontario, 15 minutes south of Hamilton (1.5 hours southwest of Toronto)

- Expansive, well designed course that takes advantage of the natural topography, which features rolling forested hills

- The locals are more than friendly--they sponsored the course! A big thank you to the sponsors and the Friends of LaFortune!

- Combines technical holes with lots of open throws and offers a surprising amount of elevation, which is always fun

- Short and long positions, nice signage, and rubber tee pads (similar to those used in White Spruce and Paris) work well

- Free! Yeah! :) No park fees! A Six Nations Indian Reserve is located on the other side of the river

Cons:

- Muddy! Granted, I went in March, which means there was still snow and ice on the ground - all very squishy

- The lengthy walk down a trail between hole #8 and #9 is kind of fun and cool, but also comically muddy right now

- Despite being next to the Grand River (which is beautiful and within sight) there are no water hazards (no big deal)

Other Thoughts:

- The little town nearby, Caledonia, seems kind of posh but still has a Beer Store, liquor store (LCBO), McDonalds, etc.

- Great to have another wonderful course in southwestern Ontario. Visit this course plus Christie or Paris for a great day!
