Another Multi-Use Park

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- significant elevation change for a city park
- generally well manicured park
- baskets and tee signs are in decent shape
- some good incorporation of creek for water hazard on 6 and 7
- most, but not all, holes do a decent job of staying away from other park activities

Cons:

- numerous, major safety hazards
- natural, unlevel (on some holes) tees
- rudimentary tee signs with no maps
- start of course and navigation are unclear
- Mach III baskets are dated and a bit underwhelming
- some taller grasses needs to be mowed
- some backtracking between holes
- ample opportunities to lose discs in fenced areas

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun enough little course for a quick round, although plan to hike some hills, as there is surprising elevation change for a city park (I guess that's West Virginia though!). This course probably is close to deserving a 2, but the major safety hazards were too much for me. In particular, hole 9 is terrible, throwing directly over/through the mini golf course and then straight at the playground if you overthrow - and as all the holes are short, this is entirely possible.

On hole 2, I ended up throwing over the fence into the pool area. This wasn't a very good shot but it can definitely be done. As the pool wasn't open yet for the season, nobody was there to help me and I ended up having to climb over the 8-10 ft chain link fence to get my disc back, which I would have rather skipped. There are a few other places to watch out for this.

There are a few decent tree obstacles on this course, but mostly you are competing against the terrain. This is not an especially challenging course, with most holes under 300 feet. The equipment is a bit dated, but serviceable. Natural tees always make navigation harder since they don't stand out, and the tiny tee signs without maps here only add to that. The tee signs do at least have par and distance for the holes. To find tee 1, drive into the park and keep going to the furthest parking area. Tee 1 throws uphill back towards the main road outside the park. After hole 3, you have to cross the park entryway to get to 4, and again after 5 towards the creek to get to 6. After holes 6 and 7, the park has a major backtrack to get to hole 8. I think this is to avoid the playgrounds, but it's not completely clear and there probably was a better layout here.

Despite being flat, I probably enjoyed 6 and 7 most since they play over the creek in the park. Like several courses I encountered on this trip, there's a nice wooded area back behind these holes that is unused - the land may not belong to the park, but it could make this course so much cooler (and keep it away from other activities).

Holes 4, 5, and 8 in particular have some crazy long grass between knee and waist height. It's not that big a deal, but I feel like you're just asking to pick up ticks, so some more mowing of these areas would be nice. Rough is one thing, but it shouldn't be that rough at the basket.

Overall, this is a decent little course, though best played during early morning hours when not many people are around, perhaps. It is not worth going out of your way for, although on my trip Weston, WV had the cheapest gas by a significant margin, so it made sense to stop here anyway. The course is fine for bagging and pretty inexperienced players, or if you just want a quick, casual round.
