It’s a Dam Campground Course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 29, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 9 DB-5 portable targets, some with a more level setting than others. Not the best targets, kinda weird and short chain area, but they caught the frisbees.
- 9 full color tee signs with par, distance, pretty accurate depictions of the layout, and directions to the next tee. These were surprisingly nice considering where they were installed.
- Course flows mostly around the outside of the campground area using the available terrain fairly well. Some trees coming into play but mostly open after a fairly wooded hole 1. Minimal elevation but they squeezed a tiny bit in there. Hole 5 throws at the water but not a ton of danger of actually going sploosh.
- Nice mix of hole lengths and assigned pars for a Rec level track with holes clocking in between 230' and 585'. Six holes are designated as Par 3, One as Par 4, and Two as Par 5. Always appreciate a varying mix from that standpoint.
- Very well kept grounds. Most everything nicely mowed with more modest mow strips on holes 4-7.
- Pretty views overlooking reservoir. I mean, it's ND, take what ya get.
- Free to play.

Cons:

- The land only has so much to offer so a number of the open holes just don't have much intrigue. After Hole 1 there's not much challenge to get off the tee. Other than tee shots on Holes 2 and 4, and the approach in Hole 7, shot shaping isn't really required. And the required shaping on all three of those is RHBH. Nothing at all to really contend with on Holes 3, 5, 6, most of 7, and 9, just open field shots of varying distance, any trees brought into play on these are only from poor throws.
- Other than the property's general lean towards the water, it's pretty dang flat.
- Holes 5's green could be epic out on a peninsula right on the reservoir. Instead, the target is placed just before the land goes to peninsula and its rope off just past. The water wasn't high so guessing this is a permanent design feature regardless of flood conditions.
- The course gets a bit tight to or crosses the campground roads/paths on Holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. We didn't have to wait on anyone so may not cause issues often.
- As noted, the targets are serviceable but not great or all level. Maybe OMD approved with the short target zone and less than average quality chains?

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed this course pretty well despite not being particularly special. Well kept grounds, a few interesting hole layouts, and some nice views over the water. Other than some kids on the campground playground by 3's Tee, it was really quiet and peaceful, particularly for a lovely Sunday afternoon on Memorial Day weekend. I probably had the fun level of a 2.0 course but this one fits more into my 1.5 bucket rather solidly so that's where it'll shake out on here. Good additional amnesties due to the campground with RV/tenting available, water, restrooms, and a boat drop. Also, Hole 9 finishes near the entrance with the basket framed between and tank and mounted helicopter which was pretty cool. I'd happily recommend this pit stop for a quick round if a bagger found themselves on this obscure route. Stack it between Larimore and the Red Willow Bible Camp and you're on a nice stretch of quality ND 9-hole garbage bagging!
