Park 9 Work in Progress

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2023 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

~ Dynamic baskets, no tees or signage yet on a new riverside park 9

~ The layout is a long "back and forth" loop in this narrow multi use park, and several of the holes can easily conflict with other users (walkers on a paved path, athletes using the playing fields, children on swings)

~ The early holes are just across open fields, but later holes in the less-used end of the park have more interesting designs (an early dogleg on #6, throwing at the river on #7 and #9)

~ As much as I like to see new courses - especially those with good baskets - Millerstown feels a little too "force fit" onto the property. Besides the problems with being too close to other park activities (playgrounds, fields, the bandshell, throwing across the walking trail on multiple holes), enthusiasm might have gotten the best of the designers. Hole #7 requires a throw around (or more likely, over) a Lions Club pavilion. Hole #8 is a downhill dogleg right with a mando tree that creates a 90 degree turn into a narrow fairway that runs right along the river. You're throwing your teeshot right at the water. That's exciting, but since the risk of throwing downhill at the river so outweighs the reward of making the turn and landing safely, most players will likely go for a layup

~ There's a lot of length here, more than you typically find in a multi use park course. Hole #1 is 365' and #4 is 345' (both par 3's), plus 485' and 498' par 4's. Fine for experienced players, but unless they set up some short tees, it will be pretty daunting for beginners. It makes for a quick round with a few fun shots for experienced players. But try to play when few others are using the park

~ Tee locations were indicated by Christmas season markers, so there might have already been some informal seasonal tournaments. There was also a sign indicating that the first four holes could not be used for the rest of the winter, so the design might be undergoing some review for changes. Given that there are no tees or signage, it's probably best to consider Millerstown a "work in progress."
