Pros:
Monte do Gozo DGC is just two miles outside the historic pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela. Thousands of pilgrims walk 500 miles across Spain to come to the church where St. James is buried but probably none of them stop and play a round at Monte do Gozo even though the course is right on their pilgrimage route. Sacrilegious!
The 18 hole is Spain's third 18 hole course and my personal favorite of the four that I've played. It's a little tamer than Parque Purificacion Tomas Disc Golf Course but you can play it without needing CPR. There are definitely hills here but much of the course is played on level ground and other than two holes, the distances are more relaxed here.
The course starts and finishes right next to the in-park hotel which actually has free parking. That in itself is a major treat for any of Spain's cities. There is no course sign but # 1 starts just below the parking area. There are nice, lengthy concrete tee pads and the tee signs are wonderful, indestructible and mostly vandal-proof. They should be standard issue at any disc golf course. The baskets are the norm for all Spanish courses, the yellow Latitude 64 models.
The course is solid with a couple of uphills, one big downhill (# 16), a few low ceiling throws, a 189 m (over 600' to you English speakers) , a tight gauntlet throw on # 4 and four par 4's although # 5 should be a par 3.
Cons:
The course is good and solid, well designed but in my best Valkyrie Kid, I'll point out just a couple.
# 5 is a fine hole but it probably should be a par 3, not a par 4.
Very long walkout after # 5.
On # 6, the 198 m hole, the basket is set out in the gravel. It would have made more sense to shorten this hole just a smidgen and set the basket in the grass.
Some ??? baskets are portables complete with wheels but they are not secured to the ground. I don't know about here in Spain but back home in the US of A, some idiot would have a great time either repositioning this basket or simply roll it to his truck to be done who-knows-what with.
Other Thoughts:
My choice for the signature hole, uhh, maybe # 14, only because I have no idea how to play this hole? It's kinda intriguing. I think some players might throw an big overhand tomahawk or I think a roller might prevail? The hole is tight, technical with an extremely low ceiling.
Rating this course since I get to be the first to review it? I like it but it might be a little simple for better players. It's an above average course, very solid. I fell very comfortable awarding a 3.0. And I'm not even awarding it any Christopher Columbus or Queen Isabella bonus points.
