Ageing Sucks

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 6, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Moraga Commons is a 40 acre park located in downtown Moraga. It features a skatepark, an ampitheater, restrooms, playgrounds, basketball courts, water feature, bocce ball courts, volleyball courts, picnic areas, and a 9 hole disc golf course.

One of the oldest courses in northern CA, I have been playing this course off and on since the early 80s when it was a lids course and I was throwing WhamO. I don't play it that often because even though Moraga is in the SF Bay Area it really is the city in the most remote area. It seems like I get to it about every 5-6 years. A lot has been written about this course so I'll just try to put out my thoughts on seeing this course develop over the years.

Nice Paver teepads on all but one hole, 8s. Sturdy Mach Xs with number plates on top.

Cons:

First off, I don't remember there being so many safety issues. Honestly what I remember is the whole place being tilled up and not being able to even get my footing, so maybe I wasn't really paying attention to the course. The safety issue seem to derive from a couple of factors, it seems like a lot of the holes have been stretched out even farther, something that has happened a lot since the holes were all like 125 ft when the course went in and disc technology has changed. Also it seems like the bushes and trees have grown a lot to create a lot of blind spots.

I don't remember hole 1 playing alongside a skate park, probably because I don't remember a skatepark at all.

Hole 2 is real easy to throw on people throwing on hole 3 and the bushes keep you from being able to see people.

Hole 9s teepads is almost directly behind hole 4s teepads making it real easy to hit someone with a bad shank. I actually thought it was a short and long teepads for the same hole.

Basically holes 4, 5, and 9 are all playing the same fairway with holes 4 and 5 actually crossing.

And holes 4 and 9 are bearing down on a bike trail with lots of blind spots.

Holes 6 and 7 play right at each other.

Hole 8 crosses hole 6s fairway.

And speaking of hole 6 it was always a cool hole, the play was always to go over the top, but the trees have gotten a lot bigger now and that doesn't seem to be the wisest choice anymore. I was just looking at pictures on here and the trees were 20 to 30 feet shorter and much less full. Now you're throwing totally blind over some huge trees.

And just to nitpick hole 9 is on top of the hill throwing away from the parking lot instead of a hole going towards. I know walking never hurt anyone.

Other Thoughts:

This is an old course that is experiencing some growing pains. It's a fun 9 hole with alot of ageing flaws. Alot of the old courses from the 70s and early 80s just couldn't adapt to new disc flying distances and ended up being pulled. This one was lucky enough to have the room to expand, but I think a little more thought could go into safety.

nice 9-hole course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

bombing over the top on hole 6

fun elevation changes and variety. there's a fair amount of trees on some holes but not too many to make it frustrating. you definitely have options for lines on most of the holes.

not too crowded. low risk parking (and it's free).

Cons:

losing discs on hole 6

watch out for picnickers on the fairway around hole 9

it's a hillside/hilltop course so the wind can definitely be a factor. hole 1 in particular seems to usually catch the northwesterlies but not so much on the other side of the hill (4, 5 + 8)

Other Thoughts:

fun course in a weird little corner of the bay area

challenging, windy, mid length, elevation changes, needs grounds repair 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well designed course. 3 pin placements. Top of the line MachX baskets. Pavers tee boxes on all but hole 8. Elevation changes. Tree and bush obstacles on every hole, though not technically a wooded course. Easy parking. Circular orientation. Easy navigation, even for first timer.

Cons:

Grounds are in terrible need of repair or upkeep. It appears as though it was decided that funding for course maintenance was cut, so instead of mowing grass moving forward, they tilled all of the land. They did so in a very coarse manner causing big dry chunks of dirt with some rocks to be scattered on every square inch of all but maybe one or 2 holes. Difficult footing, uncomfortable, with odd disc skips/bounces. No indicators of pin placements on the signage. One of the holes crosses fairways with another. Beware of holes that cross hiking trails or paved pathways for pedestrians.

Other Thoughts:

Seems to be a historically great course with excellent potential that is just going through a difficult phase of maintenance. Especially challenging when the wind picks up.

Decent neighborhood park course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Fairly challenging course with good use of terrain and open space
- A few opportunities to throw bomb shots off a hill (4 and 6)
- Makes very good use of the space allotted - longest hole is 500+ feet while shorter holes are around 200
- Nice pavers tee boxes
- 9 Mach X pins in very good shape
- Pin positions rotate infrequently but there are at least two or three options for every hole
- Hidden practice basket atop the hill near the tees for 4,6, and 9
- Usually pretty lightly trafficked so you can easily play this course alone in about 45 minutes or less
- Signs for every hole
- Decent amount of shade

Cons:

- As many others have mentioned this course grows extremely high grass in the spring and summer and is only cut once a year
- When the grass is mowed there are big blocks and rocks of dirt on the hills that make throwing a bit difficult
- Tee for 6 is on a dusty hill and there is no broom to brush it off so watch your feet
- Tee for 8 is on the footpath that comes through the park and is only marked by a faded spray-painted line with an unreadable number 8
- Kids skate park is right next to 1's fairway
- Nearly every hole after 4 crosses another's fairway, especially 4/5 and 6/7.

Other Thoughts:

I live in Moraga so this is my go-to course. I learned how to play the game here and am still pretty much a beginner, but this has always been a pretty fun course.

It's a fast-playing 9 hole in the back area of Moraga Commons Park. Sadly the maintenance on this course is lacking as compared to the rest of the park. The demarcation of the course is very obvious - you'll see a lush rolling green hill and then immediately beyond that a patch of dead brown grass is the course.

Holes 6 and 7 play in a back area separated from the rest of the course by a wall of trees. The area they are located in is flat and open.

Watch out for the footpath that crosses in front of the pin for 4 and 5's tee.

It's a good, but not great course that provides for a fun time regardless of skill level. I'm glad I have it five minutes down the road from my house and school so I can play a quick 9 pretty much whenever I want.

Nor Cal Disc Golf Course Preview Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-One of the longest and biggest 9 holers of Nor Cal
-Has good tees
-has signage
-has parking
-has bathrooms
-big long bomber shots
-Steady Ed Influenced
-old historical course

Cons:

-Walking up and down a huge hill
-poison oak
-tall trees that grab discs
-Grows really tall grass
-grass gets tilled by a tractor and then its huge ankle breaking clods

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the older Bay Area courses. It may be a 9 but it isn't an easy one. It will put some hair on your chest. You are playing up and down this big hill and might be one of the largest 9 hole courses in Nor Cal. Its one of those courses where the 9 is big enough that you question if you want to go back for a second 9. It has some historical Steady Ed significance. Its gets a 3.5 due to these but misses a star because of the conditions are only good for a few months out of the year. It grows tall grass and when its at the point where you cant find your disc they come and till it with tractors and most of the course has big dirt clods that will break your ankles. It also has a couple poison oak spots so pay attention to where your disc lands and what your walking through.

Not bad 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 29, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Scenic.
- Not crowded (at least on a weekday like today)
- Some moderately challenging shots, but then again I'm not very good and it was my first time playing.
- Decent signage and tee pads.

Cons:

- Some thick trees that can be troublesome (which ate one disc of mine)
- Poison oak
- Baskets are often difficult to locate for first timers. We had to do some hiking around to figure out where we were going.
- Two holes cross one another. Could get dicey with a lot of people on the course.

Other Thoughts:

All-in-all, this is a nice course and one I'd like to play again. It's a nice change from Aquatic Park and Golden Gate, but without having a car, it's hard for me to get to. My advice on playing here is watch where your disc lands, watch out for poison oak, and carry a baseball or a long stick for when you get one stuck in a tree!

The Commons 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

California seems to know how to build nine hole courses fairly well. The elevation change from hole to hole makes for a very fun round and adds difficulty. Shot selection is also a critical aspect for this course for the downhill throws; throwing the wrong disc or line could result in a disastrous result either getting lost (worse case) or a big roll away or what have you. Hole three is interesting from the tee pad as it looks like a straight forward toss across a large flat area only to throw your disc and watch it disappear into a fairly deep/wide valley.

In my opinion you only need drivers on a few holes even though most are a good length. Uphill holes need drivers while downhill holes for the most part are better played with a putter or mid disc unless throwing a spike hyzer for holes like number nine. There is for sure a RHBH friendly slant at this course but I believe good lefty players could overcome fairly easily by taking a different route or turnover as there is quite a bit of freedom for line shaping here AKA it's a more open course.

Cons:

The biggest problem here as with a lot of public courses these days are dealing with other park users getting in the way. Apparently other park users here don't understand that there is a course here and stood right near the baskets, especially on hole nine. While this could be an isolated incident it's something to remember; look before you throw and never throw when someone is near. Also the walking path is a dangerous area for errant disc throws from the top of the hill.

The course terrain had these giant balls of dirt and rock like they run tractors up in there, again this could be an isolated incident but being my first time from out of town it was a little annoying trying to find footing and avoid these giant hard balls. Giggity. Sure made walking much harder.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very decent nine hole course and maybe the best of the limited nine holers in the area. While not epic it is a solid course with solid holes and decent challenge. It is more than a course baggers course and I think anyone within the area should check out this course first before any other shorter nine hole courses.

Pleasantly surprising 9-hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 11, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Tons of bathrooms on site.

2) A few water fountains located around course.

3) Multiple pin positions on every hole.

4) Signs on every hole.

5) Signs show the preferred route to reach basket location, as well as the change in declination from the teepad.

6) Teepads on all but one hole (8).

7) Nice, long and wide teepads.

Cons:

1) Some baskets to holes are located within the same vicinity of other holes, so have the course map handy or ask one of the locals.

2) Signs do not have a marker to indicate basket location. So you must physically verify where the basket is or again, ask a local.

3) Some holes criss cross or are in close proximity to another hole so errant throws can be a problem.

Other Thoughts:

Course play revolves around the hill that it's built on. After playing Golden Gate Park earlier in the day, I was ready for this hill and course: Be Prepared to do a little hiking.I only saw one hole (3) that had an alternate tee, but was more concerned with what challenge that the next hole would bring. From first hole to last, this 9-hole course did not disappoint. I was pleasantly surprised with the variety of lengths and types of shots that this course presented. Equal amounts of uphill/downhill, short/medium/long and hyzer/anhyzer shots. Hole 3 on short presents a challenge as the basket is placed near an edge, so choose your shot/disc/throw wisely. Hole 5 is a bomb in either position, launch your disc over the trees. Be wary of stickers in the field as you approach the basket to hole 6 and on your way back to hole 7. Hole 8 is the only hole that doesn't have a teepad, look for the chalk line that designates it as the throwing area. The course is nicely groomed with lots of dry grass and dirt, so skip shots are definitely in play. No elevation change, up/down, that is greater than about 40 feet.

A Great Little Course!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lovely location.
Easy layout to understand. (Pay attention on 7 and 8. On seven, they have changed the basket and it's a much longer hole. And, 8 goes UP the hill, not across. Doh!)
Lots of challenging holes.
When I was there, I didn't see another golfer until the end of my round, which allowed me to play multiple discs, and practice.
The weather was gorgeous.
They do a lot with a small plot of land. Really impressive.
Lots of elevation changes.
Well maintained.
Easy to use.
At the end of hole seven, it looks like folks have made a nice little place for a beer break. Couldn't be a better idea. (There's a picnic table near the top of the hill, where you can also chill, have a beer, and watch great drives.)
I will absolute play this course again, and it may become my home course. (The drive from Redwood Road is spectacular: Lots of places to stop and see views. Would be a great destination for folks into heavy-duty biking, too.)

Cons:

They wisely keep the holes away from trafficked areas in the park - but watch for bikers and joggers - I nearly took a dude's head off with a drive, cuz he came out from a blind spot.
I can imagine that driving from The City would be a pain in the ass (and the tunnel can be a challenge. Try using Redwood Road.)
Some of the signage has not kept up to date with hole changes, but it's not major. Just pay attention and don't be afraid to walk a hole to figure out where the basket is. It's worth it.

Other Thoughts:

I'm still relatively new at this, after 40 years away from the game, so I may be a little generous. That said, I think this is a deceptively difficult course with lots of variation. I had a fantastic afternoon, and can't wait to play it again (and again and again).
Although there are some trees that come into play, it's largely an open set up. I like that, but I know others don't. (That said, I can't imagine losing a disc here. Sight-lines are clear and the course is open and well maintained.)
I really can't think of much bad to say, given some of the options in this neck of the wood. FAR superior to Chabot Park and Aquatic Park in my opinion.

Spring Overgrowth Ruins Course Experience 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful course on rolling hills. Toughest 9 hole course in the East Bay.

Cons:

Town of Moraga does little to no maintenance in the section of the park where the course is located. Every spring the grass and weeds grow to knee high level or worse. Moraga claims they can only afford to cut once annually, despite the fact that the remaining areas of the park are cut on a regular basis. Moraga is one of the wealthiest municipalities in the Bay Area, so it seems to be a matter of priorities rather than a lack of funds. Spring is the best time of the year to play the course before the hot weather arrives...but it is also the season in which the overgrowth is severe.

Pretty Good First Time Spot 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Mix of challenging holes and fairly simple but pleasing holes
- Not a ton of people on a warm Sunday afternoon - waved 3 groups to play through us, but got to throw 2 discs each our second time around
- Great use of the hill - makes a small area feel like fairly interesting
- Baskets with the number in green on top where much-appreciated

Cons:

- The first two holes were pretty tough and could punish; not the best to start off on
- #7's dirt-only tee made for a rough approach to a challenging hole
- Wish it were longer

Other Thoughts:

People are pretty harsh on this course to me -you'll enjoy a day here for sure, but there are enough minor detractions that people have which are valid which can add up for people. For me, coming from Aquatic Park, which is a pretty punishing course, this was a welcome spot. I didn't see too many non-disc people using the area and getting in the way.

Tree and bush issues weren't as bad as I imagined, but I can see how if you're not on the look out for PO, especially in the leafless season, you can get some bad Poison Oak.

"I'm new to but excited about the sport - why should I come play here?": This course really utilizes the great hill at the center of it for maximum effect. The 9 holes are varied and some are quite challenging.

Fun, Approachable and Challenging for Most Players 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 10, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Challenging but not punishing
- Pleasant rural suburban setting with some nice views
- Comfortable weather for most of the year
- Overall a very lovely park with lots of nice amenities. The course itself is isolated enough that you usually have pretty clear play.
- Large concrete tees, decent signage. Course is pretty well maintained
- Multiple pin locations on most the holes that move periodically
- Multiple Teepads on 2, 3 & 6 spice up your 2nd round a bit with different lines and distances
- Challenging but approachable. This is an intermediate level course and will accommodate a broad skillset
- I almost never lose discs here. Just steer clear of a couple heavily forested areas and you will most likely be OK
- Not usually over-crowded. Everyone I've met on this course has been extremely pleasant

Cons:

- After a rain, avoid this course like the plague. The mud continually clings to your shoes and adds about 2 lbs to each foot
- Prominent poison oak on a couple holes (2 & 4)
- Occasional interference from other park attendees. Although most non-disc golfers hang out in a different part of the park
- Criss-crossing fairways (4/5 & 6/7) can hinder play at times
- Alternate teepads are dirt
- Navigation could be improved. Look for worn paths in the dirt and you'll probably find your way through.

Other Thoughts:

I live witihin walking distance of Berkeley Aquatic park but I play this course more often. It's become more challenging in the past years. 6 from the long tee is not an easy par and could be a hole at Stafford Lake. 8 with the long basket placement is a challenging too. It's a ~350ft incline with the basket perched on the edge of an 8ft drop off.

What happened 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Seemed to be a busy/popular course.
Some great uphill/downhill shots.
Great visibility but still technical with trees and obsticles.
Tee markers and tee maps in place at most tees.

Cons:

Quite a few tee maps were inaccurate - baskets were often moved from their apparent original placement with no alternate marking on the map (basket 7 or 8 was pulled out of the ground with concrete intact).
Tight course with a little more overlap than I prefer - causes backups on the course
Course crosses public paths numerous times - make sure to check for bystanders.
Dangerous foliage (cactus, poison oak, etc.) - most are well marked/visible
More than half of the baskets were not visible without significant scouting - a pain if you are having to go up and down the hill between throws

Other Thoughts:

I had mixed feelings about this course. If it was not my first time playing I think I would have enjoyed it more. I never like overlapping runs but sometime it's difficult to avoid with courses in tight spaces. Correcting basket locations to match the maps or updating the maps could help first time players of this course.

This course is great for beginners and amateurs. I think this course has some good challenges, but you shouldn't have problems losing any discs. I love having a course where I can let a few discs fly without having regrets if they fly over the hole. There are many poison oak warnings, but thus far I haven't had any issues when searching for my discs.

Cons:

The course has recently tilled fairways so much of the walking is done over large dirt clumps, which can be quite annoying. The poison oak may be a problem for some. There is a small playground close by and many kids often play around hole #9.

Pros:

This has become my home course and the course i learned to play disc golf on. It has been very challenging for me with holes #2 and 3 having you navigate through some trees. #4,6, and 9 good size downhill throws that you can really put some power into but still have some obstacles in the way. # 5 and 8 have been ones I've really gauged my power on with some uphill shots. All and all as I experience different course this one has still been my favorite and still challenging.

Cons:

The first tee is right next to the skate park they have there and its on the left perfect for a beginner to toss right in the middle of. The first downhill shot on #4 has a walking path at the bottom that gets used pretty frequently. #6 crosses paths behind trees with hole 7 which can be pretty dangerous.

Other Thoughts:

All and all I really like this course a few flaws in the design of it but defiantly the best they could do with the space they have. Its got a lot of other things to do at this place besides just golf that the family can enjoy while you get some rounds in. Challenging course that still makes me use a lot of different shots in my repertoire.

Pros:

-Elevation Change adds to challenge.
-Baskets and tees in good condition.
-This is a small park, but they did as well as they could at keeping it away from playgrounds, picnic areas, etc...
-3 pretty dramatic downhill shots. I've played plenty of 18 holes courses that can't say this!
-Course was pretty clean. Access to Water and bathrooms is very good.
-Locals are welcoming. Jumped in with 3 of them and had a nice time.

Cons:

-You will have to watch for others using the park on foot and bicycle.
-A couple times holes cross or play very close to each other.
-It's only 9 holes and multiple tee pads were not always an option or in good condition.

Other Thoughts:

For a 9 hole course, there is good golf here. You'll have to shape shots, gauge distance on elevation shots, make putts on fast greens, and even throw hard a few times. If I lived within 15 minutes of it, I'd be a regular. Nice people and a good place to work on the game.

Great 9 hole in Moraga 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 23, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great use of the terrain and wonderful views of the town of Moraga an the Oakland hills. Mach II Baskets are older but still do the job perfectly. Most of the holes have cement block tee pads that are a good size and level. There are multiple pin locations that can make play much different from the previous location. Great locals that will help guide you in the right direction. There is a great variation of hyzer/anyhzer opportunities. Trash cans at most of the holes. Good signage to indicate pin locations.

Cons:

Moraga Commons is a busy park with lots of folks utilizing the walking paths. There are several holes 4, 5, and 8 that are near the bike path and caution when throwing will need to be exercised. This is the only course in the immediate area and can get crowded during certain times. Discs can be hard to find when the grass is tall during the spring. When the grass dries out the city discs the grass down making the fairways on some holes hard to get good footing. When course id wet the clay soil is slick and will stick to your shoes making play difficult. There is some poison oak to worry about so use caution.
Hole 7 has been changed for the worst. The tee pad is much closer to the pin due to people hanging out below the properties on the old tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fun course to go to and bust a couple rounds or more. The locals that take care of the course are not high in numbers but still make sure the course is well maintained. This course has slowly over time improved to be one of my favorite 9 hole courses that I have ever played.
There is a locals tee that is located to the left of hole 2's pin for hole 3 that greatly changes the pay of the hole and is very fun to play when the course is not crowded.
One has to watch out when enjoying a beer or a smoke during the round because there is an access road that goes through the middle of the course that is patrolled by the local cops. This course is worth taking the time to play if you are in the area.
