Perfect to grow the sport 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 23, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Setting, signage, facilities maintenance, park amenities, concrete pads.

Cons:

shorter course

Other Thoughts:

I live in the area and know the people involved in running the park so I may be able to add a few more details. The layout had to fit within a campground and not encroach upon the campers so this led to it being an "executive" course. In ball golf this simply means small or short in length. Other criteria was it needed to be suitable for newbies, younger players, and families without overly frustrating them, yet provide some interest for people who play more often. If you're looking for a relaxing environment with great scenery bring you favorite midrange or approach and give it a test. The course/park is open year round except the last two weeks in December. It is free to use but on Friday, Sat, Sun between Memorial Day and Labor Day there is a day use parking fee. Currently its $10 per vehicle.

Score cards with a map are available at the entrance booth (when open) or see any park employee. There is also a map and rules/terminology board at the kiosk on hole 1 that new players have found helpful.

In the last few weeks the expansion to 18 holes (west 9 and east 9) has been completed. This also included adjusting all signage to be aligned with the fairway, adding concrete pads on 15 holes, adding foot bridges over a seasonal creek on 1 east, and adding bag hooks.

Fun round of 9 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-great beginner level course, mostly short, open holes
-parking close by hole 1
-nice course maps with scorecard on the back available at kiosk by hole 1 or at the welcome booth
-easy to read signs with maps and pads at each hole
-baskets in good shape
-fun double Mando on hole 2
-clean and well maintained
-each hole has a unique name to it

Cons:

-intermediate/advanced players will likely be bored
-natural grass tee pads are not going to hold up too great over time, already some unevenness to them
-the map signs at several of the holes were facing the wrong direction

Other Thoughts:

As my wife and I drove into the park, we were most pleasantly welcomed at the booth by a woman wearing a UW hat. She gave us a course map and told us a little about the place. We really appreciated the warm welcoming.
The course itself is very easy! Most holes are short and wide open. As the Valkyrie Kid said, this is just right for a campground with folks who are new to the game.
I liked the double Mando on hole 2, although I might push the basket down the road a bit to allow a basic hyzer shot to have a chance to land in the circle.
The course is pretty easy to follow- just look for the white circles on the ground to know where to throw from.
There are a few quirks however: most signs at the holes are facing the wrong direction, for some reason hole 3 has a random giant gravel tee pad, and hole 6 was the only par 4- I am not clear as to why they felt the need to call it that, but hey, I enjoyed my 200 something foot eagle!
Mossyrock and Tacoma Power have done a nice job here and I would love to see the back 9 built- especially if it's slightly more challenging!

Now This Is How You Build A Campground Disc Golf Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Unlike the last campground course I played (Brooks Memorial State Park in Goldendale) the course was designed and built for the inexperienced campers that might be playing here. That's with pitch and putt distances, very few obstacles and an easy to follow layout.

Mossyrock Park is a 132 campsite park on the shores of beautiful Lake Riffe which was formed by the Mossyrock Dam. This is one of Tacoma Power's parks and seems popular with boaters and campers, alike. The sign at the kiosk says if this course is successful, a back nine could follow.

The course begins right at the small kiosk which has a course map and the # 1 tee sign. The tee signs are fairly large, brightly colored which show the route with a map, par and distance. Tees are clearly marked by two white orbs which sit in the ground. The baskets (Discatchers of some model?) have a narrow, yellow rim which proudly says Mossyrock Park and a nice sized number on top.

Each hole has a name and from 1-9 they are: The Woods @ 140', Twin Firs @ 173', The Hump @ 130', Overhang @ 155', The Long One @ 263', Shoot the Gap @ 192', Skill Builder @ 237', Confidence Builder @ 220' and Easy Street @ 152. The Long One and Skill Builder are par 4's.

There's a possibility of hunting for your disc on # 5 with rough on your right and also on # 7 where the most direct route has you throwing over tall grass almost the entire 237'. The course kinda loops back to the start.

Cons:

The # 9 natural tee pad is pretty tough and would get worse with use.

Some signs are beside the pad, some face forward and others completely backward. They're slightly confusing but the little white tee markers make it clear which direction the basket is.

The double Mando on # 2 is not only confusing but also beyond the skill level campers will have. And it's not really necessary. The Mando forces you to throw through a narrow 4-6' gap between two large Fir trees which are just 10-15 feet in front of you. I had left an old Shark in the # 1 basket and a boy about 10 had scored himself his first disc. His family was sitting there trying to figure out what this Mando thing was all about. They never would have solved the mystery had I not happened along and explained it to their satisfaction.

Other Thoughts:

I like this course for what it represents; that is a simple little pitch and putt course mostly designed for the campers that will be staying here. The park is free for day use so disc golfers are welcome to come here and play for free. There isn't much population nearby as the little town of Mossyrock probably doesn't have 1000 people. It's a way off the beaten path for casual players and course baggers alike. I guess it's right on the way if your driving across Washington # 12 which is also know as White Pass. It's a very pretty drive across the Cascades and now you can stop and enjoy a quick and easy nine holes of disc golf.
