Wide Open Hills 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

A course that is hilly enough for Colorado and almost completely open.

Mountain View is one of those courses that simply exists. The only sign of it are some tees and baskets strewn about a large hill near Cripple Creek. The scenery is a definite pro, with good mountain views all around and a pretty drive to get to the course as well. It's also secluded and quiet. On a summer morning, it was a top-notch atmosphere.

The course is a full 18 holes. They range from just under 200' to just over 500', with quite a few just over or under 200'. When it comes to shaping, most holes have zero requirements and are wide open. A few of the back nine are more interesting, with guardian trees, two slow curves, and some over-the-top in play. The hillsides and variety of difference in length are good touches that provide some level of interest.

I could see this course being decent for beginners. There are few places to lose discs, and many holes are on the shorter end. Plus, you won't slow anybody down playing at this course.

Cons:

The biggest con is that the holes are boring. There is little challenge beyond distance off the tee except for a select few holes. Compared to most courses I've played, the level of shaping is among the lowest anywhere.

I think the amenities are sub-par, as well. Single-chain baskets are okay, gravel tees are slippery, and tee signs only have number, distance, and arrow. The next tee arrows are well used, on the other hand.

There's a water hazard on (1) that could definitely eat discs. The last two to three holes could see some longer searches thanks to blind shots over or around shrubbery.

A potential con is overlapping fairways, which happens more than once. If you have the course to yourself, though, that's no problem.

The wind here gets brutal. Wide open hills means lots of possibility for discs to sail away.

Other Thoughts:

Mountain View is one of the less remarkable courses I've ever played. It is endowed with a great natural setting, but it happens to be in a tree-barren area that doesn't provide any scope for designing shot shapes. Combined with the lackluster amenities, it leaves the course at Reasonable. Unless you happen to be in Cripple Creek, don't go out of your way.

-Cows: Also worth noting that cows roam free on the property. I personally enjoy that, but others may not.

Elevation 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent use of changes in elevation. Many holes play way uphill or downhill. Very scenic views. Lots of birdie opportunities without much trouble. Course is well-marked and isn't tough to navigate.

Cons:

Gravel teepads aren't level and many had some foliage growing in them. A couple teepads are "close" to baskets but it isn't too bad - course flows pretty well overall.

Other Thoughts:

Worth the play if you're in the area. The views alone are worth it.

Hillside crisscross at altitude 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun start over a pond
Parking area close to first tee and has portolet
Used whatever was available for rocks and trees to try to protect the baskets
Tee signs were helpful for the distances but not direction (see cons)
Some cool elevated shots to baskets perched on ridge lines towards the end
Big steep uphill shots made 250'-300' holes unreachable without Advanced arms
A few downhill launches made up for the long hard slogs up up up

Cons:

Tee signs didn't always indicate the direction of the hidden baskets
About 7 tee boxes were way too close the prior basket. Some at circle two. It's not a heavily used course, but consecutive foursomes would have to wait.
Basket numbers are on small flags above basket, so can't usually see them until you unfold the flag
Most of the holes cover one big open hillside
Tee boxes were dirt/crushed rock following the lay of the hill. Some pretty steep boxes up or down or slanted on hillside.

Other Thoughts:

THe course is an easy access from a playground and bike dirt track park. Nice to start across a pond at the A tee boxes. My buddy skipped across and stayed dry. Hole Two tee sign pointed the wrong way and we played left to two WRONG baskets before we turned right and found the right one. We made a Udisc map so folks can find the right direction. A number of baskets are always visible on hillside.

Some big up hills were tough, and the climbing tells you it's 9,500 in altitude quickly. Felt a little like a ski area course due to big ups and a few looooong rollaways. Once the wind picked up the downhills really get your attention. No OB so most errant shots are quickly recoverable.

Overall they did okay with what was available. Awesome views, and the fast moving May snowstorm we played through was a typical Rockies experience. It's worth playing a round up there

The altitude is real 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course has its own designated area where you are not likely to encounter other park users. Easy to find from Cripple Creek, with a parking lot and port-o-let. Dog Park and playground means you can drop off your dogs and kids while you enjoy some high elevation disc golf. Holes are mostly open with some nice changes in altitude. Altitude of 9450' will have you chuffing on the uphills and leaving your most trusted flippy sidewinder short and left. Wind will be a factor, I count this as a pro because it makes you a better golfer.

Cons:

Tee boxes are crushed gravel, which are slippery in dry conditions, also not quite level in most cases, which left me teeing from beside the box on several holes. Also the orientation of the boxes are not always toward the basket. Be sure to look for the white arrows (thanks to whomever painted these) on the frame of the boxes to know which hole to throw at. The navigation was a bit confusing but most of the directional arrows cleared this up. Some of the tee signs are covered in bird poop, so much so that you can't read the distance. Grab one of the provided scorecards at the parking lot to avoid scraping bird poop with your driver. There are very few trees, in fact none really come into play until hole 10. The back nine does get more interesting with some blind shots and some fun lines to hit. Nice 450' finishing hole plays towards the jackass pasture, because it's not Cripple Creek without a few of those.

Other Thoughts:

Great views of the collegiates to the west from the holes up on top. Good mix of distances, and I appreciate that Cripple Creek went to the trouble to create this course. The name had me confused that it might be a pay to play private entity, but it is completely free. Don't forget to hit the slots after your round!
