Can Be Good, Not Quite Finished 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

A Course in the South Hills of Pittsburgh: This is basically the only 18-hole course in the South Hills. It doesn't come close to reaching the heights of the several great courses in the North Hills, but if you're already in the area it is worth playing if you don't want the long drive to the north.

Hole Variety: The front 9 is quite open, and the back 9 is quite wooded with a few open throws. The front 9 gets a little tedious, but the back 9 is much more exciting. There is a strong Jekyll and Hyde vibe going on between the front and back 9.

Elevation: This course has it and uses it pretty well, with a lot of throws both uphill and downhill. I remember a couple holes being tedious all-uphill slogs, but it was offset by plenty of nice downhill throws.

Caters to Beginners: The front 9 is a novice-recreational level course, giving newbies a nice (when it isn't windy, see cons) introduction to the sport. The back 9 is more intermediate level, but a couple of the holes are still within reach for beginner players. Advanced players should score under par here.

Cons:

Incomplete: As of the end of 2020, the back 9 long tee areas were laid out but there were no concrete pads poured. There appeared to be some wooden stakes in the ground for the short tee pads in some places, but again, no concrete pads poured. I overheard some locals talking about a weekly league that occurs here, so I would guess that teepads are in the works for the back area. I played with a course map which helped tremendously, but having the teepads in will really make the course feel better.

Poop: There is poop everywhere, especially in the grassy areas through which the gas pipeline runs. Watch your feet.

Wind: The front 9 is on an exposed hillside, and it was quite windy the afternoon we played. Based on the topography, I could see this being a pretty common issue.

Course Flow: Some of the walks between holes are pretty long. Hole 7 feels very out of place; if it were me, I'd remove it and add another hole in the area of the back 9. Completing the back 9 would help with the flow in that area.

Other Thoughts:

This was a tough course to rate, since it is clearly not finished in the back 9. In its "completed" state, I'd give it a 3 or a 3.5, with the strength of this course being in its back 9. The front 9 is what it is - a bunch of fairly open shots that go back and forth on the hillside. The back 9 has the opportunity for some really cool woods golf, but it needs the infrastructure in place to reach those goals.

I'm curious to come back in my next visit to the Burgh to see if the course improves over time. I hope it does, because I think there is some potential here and it would fill a major need to the South Hills.

Needs some work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Front 9 has good sight lines and good chances for birdies.

Cons:

Hole 6-8 need marked better and 7&8 have no tee pads.
Back 9 is rough. When comparing the front 9 to the back 9, it is like night and day. The front is what I would call beginner while the back is much more advanced.

Other Thoughts:

From what others have said, the course seems to have taken a hit from the gas line that was put in. It definitely has potential but still needs some work to be decent.

The Unfinished Symphony 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Variety... this course throws a lot of different terrain at you.
Signs... the map at the beginning is helpful, but so is the downloadable map, but...*
Tee pads... concrete pads. I agree with other reviewers that they feel a touch small, but they are concrete all the same
Convenience... North Strabane Park is easy to get to and it's a nice park

Cons:

It's incomplete. It was incomplete before the gas line disemboweled it. But its incompleteness is made even more obvious with that big scar running through it.
Only the front 9 have the concrete tee pads
Only the front 9 have the signage with the maps
It's overgrown. Every time I've played it I've walked through weeds that almost hit my knees in the fairways. And every time I've played it, at least two people are rummaging around on hole 3 looking for a disc they lost on 3 or 4. My first time I was that guy, spending a half hour looking for a bright yellow Innova Shark that my kid threw and he can only throw about 50 feet.
There is barbed wire around the #12 basket. Took me a good 20 minutes to get a broken branch long enough to retrieve a putter that didn't fade on me in time. I mean OB is one thing, but barbed wire? sheesh.

Other Thoughts:

* My footnote from the Pros section... The downloadable map is from the 2015 season. That was pre-pipeline, back when 6 was a groovy hole you had to hop over onto a little island of sorts in the trees and 7 was perched on a ridiculous steep hill that would guarantee long roll aways except that the steep hill was also in wetlands so you could just as easily land your disc in the perma muck. Neither hole exists anymore (the basket to 7 is there, but there's no tee to be found).

I really want to like this course. The trees often make drives challenging, but as many other reviewers noted, a bad drive can be salvaged rather easily on most of the holes. I call it the unfinished symphony because it has potential to be really awesome. And when that day comes, I'll up my review of it. But as it stands, there's only a few holes on the back 9 worth playing, and getting to them is a pain. Hole 12 is a very unforgiving par 4. From the long tee, you have to shoot down hill towards the creek with dense trees that rule out any shot with altitude. If you're lucky enough to not fall into the creek, you then go straight up hill through dense brush and shoot rather blindly for the basket which is uhhh bordered by BARBED WIRE... BARBED FREAKING WIRE.
The back 9 could use some permanent tees and signage, along with some maintenance.
I have no doubt that in its finished state, this course will be fabulous, but it's still a bit rough for now.
