What a long strange trip…

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 24, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is odd, because while I do think it's very good, it's really odd in some points as well. If I think to certain holes I have to say it's near a 4 and other things make me think it's barely a 3 so 3.5 it is.

It's in an area wedged between the Tarpon Canal and a residential area in a park with tennis courts, baseball fields and a super busy walking path.

The course begins in between the playground and tennis court with a long open hole with water from some sort of backwater/drainage from the canal both short and left of the pin and you play around this weird circular area of water for a couple of holes. The water is dark and deep with several abandoned discs floating in it when I was there, and the first several holes are quite long and not easy to attack.

Then you pop into the woods for some bending shorter holes that while much shorter are not much easier and then break into a wooded tunnel par 4 and then onto a couple of holes with the canal on your right for a bit. It's intimidating beucase the wind whipping off the open water and how deep it is, you know you won't get a disc back.

Then the vibe changes a bit and you play long park style golf with a few trees to miss until 12, which is a tunnel shot with a salt marsh behind it.

And then you return to longer park style holes to work you back to the parking lot including a couple more along the creek thing, which is just deep enough to give you pause.

Some of these holes are flat out great. Tour quality and interesting, I think that most of the course is really nice.

Pads are large and there are 2/3 on every hole to offer a wide variety to challenges, and a few have a different look as well.

Signs and navigation are good and quite easy, most baskets had an indication of where you should go next.

Said baskets are Mach Vs which seem prevalent in this area and I think at one of the most fair baskets available even if they are more plain looking than many.

The varied hole styles really made this one for me and I would consider coming back, even with the other great courses around.

Cons:

One of the cons is how busy it is and how often the walking path intersects with the course, be prepared to wait occasionally especially from the long tees.

A few of the holes, especially on the back 9 are kind of flat and repetitive. I understand it's necessary and with the land available you couldn't do a ton more but about 4 of the holes were just meh to me.

A lot of the benches are falling over and some maintenance pieces could use a bit of work.

Other Thoughts:

This has nothing to do with the course, but there were a couple of kids wondering around the wooded parts of the course with backpacks clearly not wanting to be seen.

One of them I interacted with briefly and he bugged out. Later on the long par 4 I hear running behind me and this kid is booking it at me Naruto running. I turned around quick and I guess he either thought better of jumping a big dude with a metal tripod in hand or realized he looked like a threat and diverted.

Don't know if he was on something or just impaired otherwise but it was an odd situation.

Know your skill level before playing 2+ years drive by

Pros:

- Park is located in a residential neighborhood on a major road between Tampa and Clearwater, so it's not too hard to get to.
- Course amenities are good; three tee pads per hole (some of these throw from the same pad but change the par of the hole) and three pin positions on most holes, so the course is not the same every time you play.
- You do need every shot in your bag; there are a few sidearm friendly holes and even some overhand opportunities.
- Water is not present on every hole and the hazards are avoidable for the most part.
- The first tee is located right by the park restrooms and other amenities.
- The large baseball field is open all the time and is a great spot for fieldwork.
- The tee pads are nice and large, good for many run-up styles, and they have a textured surface to help with slipping.
- The on-course navigation is pretty good; next tee signs under the baskets as well as signs to show the routes to the different tee pads.
- The course is mostly segregated from the rest of the park so pedestrian holdups shouldn't be too big a problem, save for on the walking trail that winds through the park and runs between holes 7 through 15.

Cons:

- No dedicated warm up area.
- Flooding is a major problem here after any kind of rain; the fairways of many holes will hold water and holes 12 and 17 are located in areas that are swampy most of the time and the mud can be like wet concrete.
- The red tee for #1 is off-limits and the basket is in a new, very short position on the left; presumably, the city needs to put up a fence in front of the row of houses to keep people from throwing into their yards.
- The rough in many places is oppressive - especially on holes 2-6 - and any disc off the fairway by more than a few feet is probably gone, and if you go in you will come out with cuts and scrapes.
- What water hazards there are - especially the ditches on 1, 2, 7, 16, and 18 - are extremely murky and deceptively deep; even just on the edge, your disc will vanish completely.
- The course does not return to the parking lot at all during the round and there are no on-course restrooms or water fountains and few benches.
- This course is a hike; easily at least a three-mile walk, so this may be a con for some.
- The "crossroads" can be a bit confusing if you don't see the sign beside the trail after 6.
- Because of the way the course holds water, foot brushes are an absolute necessity here and there are none.
- Bugs are a huge problem during the summer, so you'll need Off. Also fire ants here can be insane during their season; careful where you step or put your bag.
- There's not much shade on the course either; bring an umbrella or a sun hat.
- Each time I played here the grass was too thick for rollers and that's a problem given how long the course is.

Other Thoughts:

- If you're playing here for the first time, even if you think you're good, play the shortest tees first; you'll need to get the feel of this place. If playing with others, you need to spot each other, especially on the first 6 holes; the rough is borderline unfair in some places.
- You really need to know your skill level before you try the long tees here; 2-6 will make you want to leave if you're not good enough.
- You will lose discs here and you won't lose them in water, and sometimes even a good shot is punished; you need a strong mental game to battle this place.
- The gold tees are truly pro-level; again, you've been warned.
- Overall, this is a good course. The design is thoughtful and makes you throw a lot of different shots, but play the tees that represent your skill level. Some improvements could bring my rating up further. It's not a "go out of the way to play" course for me because of my skill, but if you've got the arm you'll have fun here.
