Central Florida Beauty

Pros:

Peace River Disc Golf Course is located in west central Florida about 15 miles south of Lakeland just off a major state road and is easy to find based on the directions in the Course Description.

There are 18 holes with two tee pad positions each designated short (red stripe) and long (blue stripe) and with a separate basket for each (the short baskets are orange; the long are blue). The tee pads are generous being extra wide and long. The pins are not just farther from each other but are also offset so that the orange basket is not an obstacle in front of the blue. The holes are varied with no two alike. The course will be challenging for a beginner but for intermediate to advanced players there is plenty here to test your skills.

The course is in a sand pine scrub habitat filled with oak trees, tall long leaf pine, tufted fountain grass and saw grass. There is quite a bit of invasive Brazilian pepper as well. Much of the course is flat but there are some small hills.

Since the course is only 6 months old at the time I played (Jan. 2024) I was quite surprised to see how mature it was and that the fairway edges did not need to be tramped down to be defined. The rough was clear and not overgrown with weeds. However, there are lots of opportunities to lose discs if you land off the fairway into the tall fountain and saw grass which make discs invisible and hard to find. But the fairways are generous and there are well maintained landing zones.

The course is long and large but is laid out well and the navigation was very easy. A course map or UDisc may be helpful but not needed. You will have to cross another tee pad twice to get to your hole and those are when going from #7 to #8 (cross behind #6 tee pads) and going from #12 to #13 (cross in front of #17 tee pads). This might be an inconvenience in a tournament but otherwise not a problem.

Since the course is new there are not permanent signs but the current Tee signs are laminated paper but have an easy-to-read designation of hole #, par, and distances (although the distances are not necessarily accurate). The graphic layout of the hole gives a great perspective which is very helpful since you can't always see the baskets from the tee pad. The signs to indicate navigation to the Next hole are plastic board but well placed and easy to see. However, the arrow direction marking is inked and fading or completely faded out from the sun but the trail leads the way.

As far as the amenities there are no garbage cans that I saw located on the course but I also did not see trash left on course (not even a candy wrapper). Also, there are no benches to rest on or hangers for your bag. There is a Porta John located at the walk-in gate.

Cons:

I really did not have any cons for this course. The only slight bother was a little noise in an otherwise perfect environment. Along holes #4 and #5 is a pallet factory and the course is located about ½ mile from a busy major state highway. Once you are a few holes away from here, though, it is quite peaceful.

Other Thoughts:

The course is a Florida beauty with tall pines and oaks, a challenging layout without many water hazards but plenty of grass hazards, and just overall fun. Even though it was a little over an hour drive for me from Tampa I will definitely be back soon.
