Ignored the Map the Second Time around

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

PV West might be worth a play if first visiting Upper Salford DG, just for an extra round filler or possibly as a warm up round to Green Lane Park's Monster course.

It's on middle school grounds and shares space with the fields. Playing middle of winter, on a weekend, and now in summer would be ideal.

Parts played like a better community course niner, with a fair amount of obstacles, however the official course layout falls short but is easily fixable. It starts really well and #1 is truly star of the course. #4 is also worth throwing.

+Good holes can be created if you're willing to ignore the udisc map

Cons:

Navigation is non-existent and there are no tees, markers or maps onsite nor online here. It's all guesswork. Going by the UDisc map, the course peters out on the backhalf - a series of uninspired holes. The basket arrows sometime disagree with Udisc's map to boot.

If #1 is anything to go by, the designer had talent going in but then had to curtail the course later so the middle school crowd doesn't lose too many discs. Making for a tepid course. Or maybe I'm reading tea leaves because so many of the holes are made better simply by moving the tee 50-75 feet. The good news is on empty days nothing stops anyone from throwing a better layout.

#5 seems so short and pointless, it was probably designed to start farther back. Distance would put the threat of overshooting the wall by the basket with fade into play, for harder comeback putt.

#6 seems like it should tee-off closer to basket #5 so the course gets a single slight downhill rather than just another flat shot.

#7 currently throws 100 footer over the valley from near basket 6. But it seems using the nearby concrete square (discus throwing pad) further back would be more challenging and 200ft, bringing obstacles and punishing fade into the mix.

#8 is the perfect example. Map tee is the side of the detention pond for a kid friendly but boring tee-off. The natural tee-off spot seems like in the valley dip, thirty feet in front of basket #7. That tee-off spot goes for 75' over a detention pond, full of tall growth like cattails or the like, to an uphill basket about 260' away.

#9 is the last one of those. A short severe right curve around the building (don't hit the corner security camera!) that seems like it was supposed to start 50 to 75ft farther back than it does.

-Navigation? What navigation?
-No tees

Other Thoughts:

You'll know you're in the correct parking area if you see #4 basket perched near the parking lot. Go across the driveway.

1-4 loop, 5-9 loop.

#1 Across driveway. Nice little V shaped fairway with basket 263ft bit to the left.
#2 Cross driveway again. Near playground, shoot towards the basket you see hanging out in sight of the football goalposts in the distance.
#3 Coming back, shooting a right curved shot for the basket that was near the sheds.
#4 At end of parking lot, shooting at basket 300ft near starting point, at edge of lot. A hyzer, going right of asphalt path is a gentle downhill roll.

#5 Tee near last basket towards the basket along the wall going towards the school.
#6 Tee off near shed to basket along Track & Field Oval.
#7 Throw over the valley 100ft away.
#8 Throw uphill alongside detention pond to backdoors of school.
#9 Back towards corner of school, tee off near shed to basket around corner.

Terrain: OOo - Typical. Some interesting spots but also hemmed in by other activities and left underutilized.
Execution: Oo - Passable as is. Barely. No navigation. Back half feels like a neutered course but nothing ignoring map won't fix.
Upkeep: Oo. Okay. Just mowing.
Difficulty: Oo - Beginner's course.
Fun Factor: Oo - Passable as is. No wow factor but a playable course.
Crowded: XXX. I expect it to be unplayable during Spring/Fall School Days except in Winter. Summer clear.
Overall: Oo - Passable as is. Reasonable only when the course map can be ignored for more interesting shots.
