A Fun Park Style Course With Plenty Of Fun Holes Geared Towards Intermediate Players.

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Review #100 and Course #149 for me is Perryville City Park, a fun park style 18-hole course that snakes all around a vast, 100 acre park. This course makes the most out of the space provided, and has a little bit of everything you'd expect out of a recreational park course.

Location of Perryville is right on I-55, about an hour and a half south of St. Louis and 45 minutes north of Cape Girardeau. You'll most likely access the park via S Kingshighway, where you can take an immediate left and then complete a U-Turn to the right till you reach the parking lot with the disc golf course map next to it. There are some fast food options, mainly a McDonalds by the highway, as well as independently owned foot stops in town. There are also a few gas stations on Kingshighway. If you are wanting a day out of disc golf, There's also a 9-hole course at Northdale Park, just a couple minutes up the road. There aren't really any other super close courses; going south, you'll find another pocket of courses around Jackson and Cape Girardeau, and Chester and Ste. Genivieve have a couple as well.

Park Amenities are robust at Perryville City Park. This park has pavilions, baseball fields, pickleball and tennis courts, numerous walking trails, wildflower preservation spots, and a dog park, just about all of which you will see during your round. The park also has plenty of bathrooms, and I remember seeing a few throughout my round, including one right after hole 9.

Course Equipment is very nice as a whole at Perryville. The baskets are DISCatchers that I'm pretty sure are the originals installed in 2013, and while they're not looking the shiniest at this stage of their life, they're still catching great. The course also has a practice basket right by the parking lot with plenty of space to practice long putts and even approaches. The tees are all concrete and were very nice to throw from. The tee signs have all of the info you can really ask for, including pin locations, which pin is in use, pars, distances, and a basic hole graphic. The course map is also handy by the parking lot, providing a nice overhead shot of the course along with the park as a whole. My favorite equipment on site has to be the prominent next tee directions on every basket, which single handedly made navigation immensely easier on this course given some of the longer transitions. This course also has benches at plenty of the holes.

Course Design is composed of mostly 200 to 350 foot holes with varying numbers of mature trees to navigate. There's a nice mix of tee shots that either require straight drives, a particular shape in either direction, or careful navigation of low ceilings. The distances are fairly accessible to newer players when considering pars, with this course being more scorable for intermediate and advanced players, especially in the back 9.

Elevation doesn't necessarily vary to the degree the hole info page suggests, but there is plenty of subtle slopes throughout the course. Holes 1, 6, and 14 are the most uphill holes (especially 14), and holes 5, 15, and 17 play the most downhill. Other holes like 2, 11, and 12 have either valleys through the fairway, or pin placements that are on hillsides that make roll aways something to be wary of.

Shot-Shaping is going to be an essential skill for you to have on a lot of the holes at Perryville. Holes 5, 7, 9, and 11 are particularly right hand back hand favoring shots off the tee, while hole 13 is the primary spot where an anhyzer is going to be most beneficial for that same throwing style. Holes 2 and 3 will have you navigating a low ceiling. Many holes like 5, 14, and 15 have multiple lines to the basket. Others like the A pin of 14 and 3 require a pretty straight shot. Overall, you'll need a little bit of everything here at some point.

Distances are mainly in the 200 to 350 foot range, though 16 and 18 have B placements that are par 4s and around 450 feet. A lot of the longer holes feel shorter than their lengths suggest, even those that aren't downhill. For the most part, there's a decently consistent ratio between the length of a given hole and how many obstacles you'll need to navigate, with a lot of the shorter holes having more specific shot requirements.

Difficulty leans towards intermediate players. Newer players that don't have good accuracy or distance on their drives will find a lot of the shots challenging on this course, and may have a little trouble hitting par, as the distance/par combos are fair but tough on a lot of holes, especially in the front 9. Advanced players, on the other hand, will likely be able to score really well on this course. DGCR usually has me in the 890 to 920 range of rating, and I was able to hit a -7 on this course with 5 birdies to end the round. If you can throw 250 feet somewhat accurately, ending with a turkey is in the cards with two fairly open 450 foot holes and a very short hole 17.

Course Highlights: Hole 15 is a fun one, downhill with plenty of trees. You can either go for the straight shot, or hit a wide line either direction. Hole 18 is also a fun design, with 450 feet and a slight hill about 2/3rd of the way to the pins. The A placement is at the top of a drainage ditch with trees on either side, a fun tunnel challenge to end your round if the basket is in that spot.

Cons:

Proximity To Other Amenities is definitely the main con to this course that was on my mind throughout my round. This park has plenty of other park uses and pathways, and this course snakes around jus about all of them. That comes with plenty of spots where you're throwing close to other paths and fields. Hole 2's pin is close to a path that isn't visible until you are on the green. Hole 4's pin is close to a shelter. Hole 5's pin is close to a path that many player's shots will curve towards. Hole 8 plays over a path, though you can see pedestrians before throwing. Hole 11 plays towards a baseball field that is much easier to end up in than it looks (trust me). Hole 15's pin is also very close to a path. I could see on nice Spring and Summer days, especially those when ball games are being played, a risk for discs to end up where they shouldn't, especially if the disc golfer isn't looking before they throw.

Sogginess and Drainage Holes are also very prominent throughout the course. Hole 5 plays close to a ditch, which was pretty wet given recent rain. Hole 14 has one as well. Hole 18, while a fun design, also revolves around a drainage area. There are also plenty of other spots where there are drainage areas a disc could end up in. Most of them are covered with grates, but there are still plenty of disc sized holes in those areas and I've seen weirder things happen than a disc hitting such a spot just right.

Trainsitions can be pretty long, especially 8 to 9, 9 to 10, 11 to 12, and 12 to 13. The directional arrows on the baskets really are helpful and will get you to the next hole; just expect some long walks, many of which have zero shade.

Course Equipment seems to have been improved overtime given some of the older reviews, particularly with signage. That being said, I wonder how much more life the baskets have given how they are looking. I didn't have any issues with them catching, but the bands and metal are far from pristine at this point.

Course Difficulty may not be very welcoming to newer players, as many of the holes will be hard for any new or novice to score on. At the same time, advanced players will likely score all over the course. The pins don't add too much variety in shot shapes or challenge.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, Perryville City Park provides a fun round of golf. My expectations weren't super high driving down for the afternoon, but the setting throughout the park was very nice to walk around, especially with the parts not around the ball fields. The park gets plenty of use by the community, and it's obvious that groundskeepers and the parks and rec department take good care of this and other parks in town. Perryville really seems to punch above its weight in the parks and amenities department for a town of its size.

This isn't a course I'll be driving an hour and a half out to play again, but I'd be happy if this was a home course for me, and I'll be keeping it in mind if I find myself traveling south on 55 in the future.

If you're driving up or down 55 and want a disc golf break, this course is a nice option for you. I hope this course gets plenty of traffic by the community, and while it's not a destination course by any means, I'm happy to have it be my 100th review for DGCR. Here's to the next 100!

St. Louis Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 3, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained park/course located in a nice city park. The flow of the course is solid and there are plenty of trashcans and restrooms along the way.

There are a decent variety of holes in general along with a few elevation shots. Tee signs (which makes navigation that much easier) and concrete pads are on every hole and the baskets are all in good condition (2 pin positions per hole).

There are no holes that really go into any wooded areas. Just mostly well positioned trees, a little bit of out-of- bounds, variety in elevation, and some tough greens make this course a reasonable challenge especially for beginner to intermediate level players (but can still be enjoyed by all skill levels). The course can be played within 1.5-2.25 hours easily. Adding some additional players may lengthen this time frame.

There is also a practice basket located near the parking lot and I want to point out how friendly the folks were in Perryvile. I met some very nice people at this park.

Cons:

One thing I can see that this course may have issues with is when there are a lot of baseball games being played. While I was there, no baseball was being played at all. In the heart of the summer, I can see this changing. There are some hole locations and tee pads that are a little close to baseball fields; especially bleachers, benches, and bullpens.

The one other minor thing with this course is the vast majority of holes are within the 225-350 range there is I think 1 or 2 that gets close to 400'. Which is OK, given the amount space. It would be nice to see a few more either bomber holes, or even some more technical holes (but that is just my opinion).

I am glad to see 18 tee pads out here. I play some courses that do no have any, so something is always better than nothing. But, the tee pads aren't all that long. Even someone with a medium run up will start on the grass. But, like I said, at least they are there, and that is something.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed my round at this course. If I am in the area, I could see myself playing this course again. I could also see how this would be a great course to teach someone how to play, as the course is not overwhelming by any means.

I also thought the course was well kept. I noticed plenty of trashcans and restrooms. The park is a multi-use park, so please be kind to others. The people I ran into were all extremely nice to me and I let them know I was from out of town.

Hope this review helps! Have fun and stay safe out there!

Continuous and Consistent Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

~ Markers at every tee, all of which are leveled concrete pads, and directional signs to the next hole where necessary
~ Course flows very well, is full of moderate hills with well placed trees throughout
~ Plenty of straight shots, left hooks, right hooks, and technical multi shot approaches, long and short, it definitely tests your throwing velocity
~ Beginner friendly, but a great thrill for the moderately skilled, no major hazards, minus the thick brush at 7 and 8 that you have to shoot over, better than a pond
~ Great location at the Perry Park Center, plenty of places to park and pick up a game at any point in the course if you need to get spread out away from another group
~ Easy to get to from I-55 (exit 129) use 51 headed east, turn right onto 61, drive until you see the Perry Park Center on your right, maybe a 5-7 minute drive from I-55
~ It's even better if you live in town, simple to find, and located close enough to the edge of town to not feel like you are playing in peoples back yards (at least not the whole time, 5 - 10 play near some residential houses, but they really aren't that close)
~ Park is really spread out and not claustrophobic, yet the next hole is generally only a turn of a head away
~ Course map located near the Perry Park Center parking lot with a practice basket located between it and tee number one
~ Bathrooms and water spickets/fountains located throughout the park
~ Friendly locals

Cons:

~ One of the few downfalls to this course would be coming during a heavy populated day of Baseball or Softball, due to all the walk paths it would be hard to feel comfortable throwing with children playing near the fields in a few spots, but you could easily skip to the next hole
~ Couple signs are seeing a little age, material is peeling off the metal blank (example, #16), this could easily be fixed when it really becomes a problem, also the way finding sign pointing to 16, near 15's basket, kinda misled me, but referring to the course map photo I took on my phone, I found my way

Other Thoughts:

~ This is a really great course, great place to test using ann-hyzers and hyzers, using various discs, and also throwing velocity, to navigate trees and to get the best approach on the basket
~ I can only see this course remaining a great place to play into the foreseeable future, if not maybe even improving with use of landscaping around the tees and baskets, it was well worth the near 40 mile drive from my place in Cape
~ FOR CAPE AREA LOCALS, I would say it is on Par with Litz and Scott City, but a little better than Cape County. It is very similar tree coverage to the first 9, 10, 12-15 at litz, with the hills in Scott City, great place to play if you don't enjoy dense forest courses

Nice relaxing course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained. No major hazards. Easy to find the next tee. Out of bounds shouldn't be an issue, all holes had wide fairways.

Cons:

Could be a bit more challenging.

Other Thoughts:

A variety of tee shots. Uphill, downhill, tunnel, etc. Most tee shots are wide open, there are just a few that force you to limit the hyzer. The day I played the ground was a little soft, but it was just after a snow thaw so it was to be expected. It is in a public park so it's well maintained, but don't expect a country club level of grooming. There is a walking track zig sagging through the course but it didn't really interfere with play.

Clean, Enjoyable, Great for the Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This new course makes good use of the empty spaces in a well established park. The layout includes concrete tees, excellent signage, and Discatcher baskets, all in new condition. Getting from one basket to the next tee might have been confusing but for the explicit directional information provided wherever needed.

It's great that they found a way to put 18 holes here rather than stopping at 9 or 12 as they might have, but there are some long hikes between a few holes.

Parking is plentiful as are restrooms.

Although there are lots of roads running through this park, the course, thankfully, does not play over them.

The layout is wide open, so you're unlikely to lose any plastic here.

Cons:

Because this course makes use of an old park packed with ball fields, playgrounds, walking paths and picnic areas, it may get quite busy at times. I played at dawn on a frosty morning and had the place to myself, but beware of the traffic on a nice afternoon.

The holes average about 300 feet, which is a little outside my range, so I didn't have many birdie chances, but pars were relatively easy. Any bogies carded were the fault of the player, not the course. Those with stronger arms will likely score quite well. There is no rough, just wide-open, mowed parkland, so accuracy off the tee is not all that essential. In only a couple places will you have to worry about hitting an early tree from the tee.

Every hole is pretty much a straight shot from tee to basket. The trees that do come into play are, for the most part, widely spaced and mature, leaving plenty of room to maneuver. The course has minor elevation changes, rambling uphill here and downhill there, but there's nothing that adds any real stress. (I would describe this course as mostly flat rather than moderately hilly.)

Most of the baskets are in wide-open spaces, so putting is pretty simple once you're close. There are a couple exceptions, notably hole #18 which is perched atop a bank at the end of a ravine and guarded by trees.

Other Thoughts:

I generally would prefer a course that's a little more challenging, but this layout is perfect fit for the town, especially since there's nowhere else to play for miles around. This course won't frustrate newbies or family groups and is decent for more experienced players. I'm in town often to visit relatives and it will be great not to have to drive 30 miles to play a round. I wouldn't go out of my way to play here if there were other opportunities, but the course is clean, well maintained, and a good fit for the community. I'll be back for another round on my next visit.

Cons:

some areas are pretty soggy after a heavy rain

Other Thoughts:

its a good course for beginers and more experinced players. The course pushes beginers to the limits of their abliltys and chalanges more experinced players with holes that are shorter and makes them take some off of what they are use to throwing

Solid city park style course but nothing special 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

1. concrete tees

2. signs with pars and feet

3. signs for next tee by the baskets

4. well maintained

5. decent variety

6. friiendly people

7. alot of bathrooms

Cons:

1. short

2. too open in parts

3. a few boring holes

4. too much walking from last basket to next tee

Other Thoughts:

This is not a bad course by any means but its also not anything to write home about hence the decent/typical grade. Its about as standard of a city park course as your going to find. It certainly has its bright spots and the park is pretty good. 4 or 5 holes could easily be tweeked to make it better but the open holes have trees planted that could improve it as well in a few years. It's not the best but if I lived in Perryville Id be happy with what they have done and pleased in general. I wouldnt drive more than an hr away to play though.
