Perfectly Complements The OG Course

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Short, fun, ace runs/deuce-or-die style golf adjacent to Sandy Knolls - Original. I don't think anything breaks 250'. Trees and little scraps of elevation are used to add interest and challenge. A mix of slightly wooded, mostly open, and wooded tunnel shots keep things nicely spicey.
- I had a lot of fun on this course. I would've loved having this kind of 9er locally as a beginner. It's not necessarily church-league beginner-friendly, but if you're a new dg obsessive, this would be a good place to cut your teeth.
- Proshop and picnic area. Port-a-john.

Cons:

- The tee areas are natural, mostly just big mushy pits of sand, with a board to trip over at the front. Literally the worst of the worst, and non-optimal teepads almost *never* bother me.
They are so bad here, and so inconducive to good footing, I had to knock off .5 discs. Just noticed this course was installed recently, so perhaps a tee upgrade is in the works.

Other Thoughts:

- Jam it out pre-OG course to warm up, or as a cool-down after getting your ass handed to you after playing from the Gold Tees to the C pin positions. Either way, a perfect complimentary 9-hole course to increase the discin' enjoyment to be had at Sandy Knolls.
- Pay to play, $5 day passes. Online payment for days when the entry booth is unmanned. Look for the little yellow cards with the info at the pro shop.

Warm up with this pitch and putt 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course maintenance 10/10. Course is very clean and the entire site appears very well maintained.

Navigation on holes 10/10. All the baskets are visible from the tees, and distances are provided on the tee signs. There isn't a map on the tee signs, but with how short the course is and the fact that there aren't alternate positions this doesn't matter.

Finding Discs 9/10. Discs should be pretty easy to find overall, and even shots that go astray shouldn't be too far off the fairway since the holes are short. There is some brush lining 2, 3, and the left side of 4 that could potentially get thick in spring/summer.

Use of obstacles 8/10. Not much land to work with and this course accomplishes its purpose. I would've liked to see a couple more holes with obstacles in the fairway like hole 1.

Comfort 8/10. Pro shop on site, fairways well mowed. A bench or two in the middle of the course wouldn't hurt.

Navigation between holes 7/10. Arrows attached to cages pointing toward the next tee. A couple confusing spots with crossing trailes (between holes 1-2) and 3-4 appears to point to the parking lot. You have to walk around the corner past a second practice basket.

Elevation 5/10. Not a ton of elevation present, but there's a decent mix with 5 and 8 playing downhill and 4, 6, and 7 playing slightly uphill to effectively add a small amount of length.

Cons:

No alternate hole positions 0/10.

Challenging all levels 2/10. This is a good course for new players, but for anyone with much experience it will primarily be a pitch and putt to warm up for the 18-hole course.

Decisionmaking 2/10. Hole 1 is definitely the most interesting, giving multiple routes to the basket. The rest are pretty straightforward in how it needs to be played, with the only decision being whether to go for an ace run or a tap in 2. Elevated basket on 5 gives a little risk/reward.

Variety of distances 3/10. All of the holes are short (which makes sense for this purpose), ranging from 150-240ft. Holes 1 (240ft), 4 (200ft uphill), and 7 (200ft uphill) are the "long" holes. Personally I threw mids on these 3 and putters on the other 6.

Variety of shot paths 3/10. Most holes are pretty straight to the basket. 1 favors a slight left to right, and 5 and 8 require a slight right to left.

Baskets/Tees 4/10. Baskets are pretty good, new chainstar pros. Tees are natural dirt, but it's not hard-packed, it's more like loose sand. You're better off teeing from just to the side/behind them.

Variety of openness 4/10. A lot of holes have obstacles lining one or both sides, without much in the middle to avoid. Hole 1 is an exception. Hole 4 also makes you hit a slightly smaller gap about 60 feet in front of the tee.

Other Thoughts:

Overall Challenge 2/10.
More precise rating 2.228

Great course for kids or people playing the game for the first couple times. Not just an open field, but not really any technical lines to hit after the first hole. Fairways are fair and decently wide on the holes through the woods. For more experienced players it's a great way to warm up before playing the main 18 hole course on site.

This course is right between a 2.0 and a 2.5 for me. Installing decent tee pads would be enough to bump my rating up to a 2.5.
