Pros:
As the designer and owner of this course, please understand that I'm biased, so read all the future reviews to get a better feel for this course.
Pro's
1)Good variety of long / short, open / wooded, lefty / righty, ceiling / no ceiling shots.
2)Variety of basket heights: On blocks, buried in ground, on poles, hanging in trees, normal heights
3)Since it's a private course, it's easy to modify the layout so there is a lot of variety in the way the holes are connected to form new courses. ( See Con's #5 below )
4)The course is on a beautiful piece of property with a pond, a lake, creeks, big Live Oak trees, some elevation changes, mowed meadows and thick woods.
5)Good variety of basket locations: Near a creek, under Live Oak trees, protected by overhanging branches, On the side of a hill near a pond.
6)There are 2 standard 24 hole courses: Red and Black, but it's easy to connect the holes in different arrangements to make shorter courses, or only woods or only open holes. It's also easy to add borrowed baskets to spread out a larger # of players.
Cons:
1)No tee signs. You need a guide or at least a map. Small tee flags are used during scheduled events to show the distance and target basket for each hole.
2)Most tee pads are grass or dirt, so it can be slippery. 1 concrete pad, 7 wooden pads, a few carpet pads.
3)If there are more than 20 people, there can be some waiting for a basket or fairway to clear. The fairways cross, so you have to be aware of other players on the course.
4)To play the course, you need to know the owner, contact the TDGA ( local disc golf club) or play during an event. You can't just show up and hope to play the course.
5)The courses change often, so it's hard to memorize the layout ( see Pro's #3 above ). It can be a confusing place to play.
6)The owner loves trees.
7)Some potential for snakes in the creeks. Some thorns in the rough around the pond, some mosquitoes and ticks depending on the season.
Other Thoughts:
This can be a pro for some and a con for others, but Tally Hills is about 12 strokes harder than Tom Brown and 6 strokes harder than Jack McLean.
As the designer, I felt I met these design goals:
1)This course will make you a better player since it has a variety of shots. Or it will make you quit the sport.
2)The woods holes were designed to help you get out of trouble, so they are shorter, but ask you to perform a specific shot.
3)The basket locations were chosen based on their interest, then the tee locations and fairways were picked.
4)I wanted some true par 4's and a few Ace runs.
5)I only wanted a few poke and hope type shots. But I'm ok with some luck on a hole.
6)I designed some risk/reward type holes with multiple fairway choices.
