Fun outing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great course for long unobstructed shots.

Terrain is pretty hilly but makes for good up and downhill variation.

Extremely clean, no trash in sight.

Cons:

Other than a couple holes, not really any obstacles.

Nothing that really makes this course "amazing". Just a solid slightly above average course.

Layout is slightly confusing.

Can get crowded.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a good course to work on elevation shots.
Not close to the best or worst course I've played.

Good for beginner/intermediates 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Wide open layout. Well marked course. Two pads for each hole. Some tree holes on the front 9 and a hilly layout on the back 9. Hard to lose a disc.

Cons:

Still new to disc golf, so I'm not sure. Can get a bit crowded/congested?

Other Thoughts:

Still pretty new to disc golf. This course is very close to my house. Of the four courses nearby, this is my favorite. A great course for beginner to intermediates. I wonder if experts would get bored here.

Awesome & Challenging 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Loved the openness and slight elevation change throughout the course.

Easy to navigate between baskets to next tee pads.

2nd favorite course in central Indiana!

Cons:

Nothing to complain about.

Other Thoughts:

As a beginner, some of the holes should be bumped up to par 4 or 5 due to distance.

Par 3s 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

All the tees now have concrete tees.
Plenty of elevation changes.
Good signs at each hole.

Cons:

I would say most holes are the same/similar.
I think it's mostly the hills, but it is sometimes very windy.
I play almost every hole as drive, easy up, easy putt. Going for long putts can quickly lead to bogeys with the wind.

Other Thoughts:

If you want to have more fun, play the short tees or stagger short/long. Otherwise play for ~15 pars and a couple birdies, and maybe miss a couple putts from wind gusting.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is set up on the sprawling grounds of a church. The course stays well away from any other activities. There are 2 concrete tee pads on every hole. These are all nice sized and grip well. The baskets are DISCatchers that are all in excellent shape and catch great. Each also has a next hole arrow attached to the pole. The tee signs here are also well done. They all have a nice map of the hole layout, hole #, par, any applicable OB, both tee positions and distances for each set of tees. Great job with these. The flow from hole to hole is very intuitive too, making for a pretty hassle free, seamless flow. There is a pretty decent amount of elevation here that is used very well. The first section of the course delves into a more wooded area with the latter being more open with scattered trees. This helps make it a well rounded round. The wind will be your main adversary on the more open holes. The grounds were in immaculate shape when we were there. Mowed to perfection and not a lick of trash to be seen. This probably isn't going to be the busiest course around but there were a couple other groups out on a Wednesday afternoon. The course is free and permanent (donations are accepted).

Cons:

There's not much for cons here. There's not any bomber type holes if that's your thing. The distances are all on the shorter end of the spectrum. Other than that not much I can come up with.

Other Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised with this course. I wasn't really expecting much with it being at a church but wow was I wrong. This course was designed superbly with the available land. Not worth a long drive out of your way to play but if you're anywhere near here it's definitely worth a stop. This is a great place for beginners but even more experienced players should enjoy it.

Pros:

Good tees and decent length for amateurs.
Tees are now almost all paved.
Kept in great condition.

Cons:

Needs concrete pads still on 11, 13, and 14.
Lot of contact with cross country course which can disturb round.

Other Thoughts:

The greens are really strangely cut. Just because you land in the cut green does not mean that you have any kind of putt.

Solid course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 21, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Makes good use of the terrain
Requires multiple types of shots
Easy for beginners from the amateur tees
Clear signage, with next tee arrows below baskets
It would be hard to lose your disc on this course
Dual grippy concrete tees on every hole

Cons:

Some holes seem too easy
Some holes could use a few extra trees

Other Thoughts:

This course is good, but I think planting some strategic trees here and there could make it better. Also, a couple of the next tee arrows below the baskets were pointing in the wrong direction, so that was confusing.

Terrain limits potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice elevation changes.
Nice variety of shots.
Good baskets.
Multiple tees 2 per.
Map at the beginning.
Nicely mowed and clean. didn't see any garbage.

Cons:

The layout is a little confusing in some places.
The area is shared with by a running track and some sports fields so sometimes there are lots of people around to be careful of.
Aren't really any wooded holes but some line shaping.
Not the most creative design.
Dirt/grass tee pads.
Not very challenging, every shot is kind of one dimensional.

Other Thoughts:

This is a decent course with a bit of a chance to air it out a bit if it isn't too busy. I found my confidence affected by the number of joggers around. The shots were varied enough to have fun but not super challenging to where I am dying to come back. This is a course you would feel lucky to have in your neighborhood but you wouldn't drive too far to go play at. My sister lives near by and I plan on destroying this course next time when there isn't so much foot traffic.

Rare Indy Hills 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 20, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

With the best use of elevation in the Indianapolis area, The Hill is a course that beckons the Intermediate and above disc golfer to plan a round here on a breezy day, if they like to challenge themselves under tougher conditions. Having a good balance of up-and down-hill shots, several that require some deliberate line shaping, and even a couple of tightly wooded, shorter holes, it has a nice mix for the rambling acreage available. The 'northernmost' six holes (10 & 12, 15-18) each have dual sets of large, level concrete tee pads (the others are natural turf, for now?), the longer ones really giving the opportunity to show off a bigger arm. Though I was playing the short tees this time, I really felt tempted to bomb one down the hill on 15. And 10 is a fun, reachable controlled shot to a guarded 'green'. (What can I say, I like the down-hillers!)

Each red tee has an excellent sign that shows two tee positions and two basket positions, for a considerable amount of flexibility of play. I wouldn't be surprised to hear folks even add 'safari' holes here, like playing from 1 to 9 (putting the water hazard just beyond the drive), or 12 to 14 (plays a little longer downhill), for instance. There is obviously a lot of potential to play long tees and use the cross country 'hedge' lines for delineating OB, and have a truly competitive tournament course here. Newer DisCatchers are all in good shape, and often include next tee signage. And though I didn't stop in, there is a pro shop and lost and found on site (though most of the year, it might be difficult to lose a disc here).

Cons:

The main issue out here is the natural tees on holes 1-9, 11, 13 & 14. With the awesome, dual concrete tees on the others, it really jumps out at you. And the lack of signage at the blue tees, combined with the need for the course map to detail all tees and basket positions, make it difficult to navigate for a first-timer. Heck, even the red tees are tricky to spot the first time, being just little round markers in the ground.

Course flow is a little awkward the first time, with several baskets being blind from the tee sign (1, 2, 7 (sort of), 13 & 18), the long walks between some holes (especially up the hill to 10), and the fact that a few holes throw over obvious safety hazards. Hole one plays over the porta-potties and a small cross country bleacher. Several holes have to give way to runners or sports fields (and cross country seems more used here than the disc golf course, at least in the late season I played here).

Other Thoughts:

If you want to start the course from the beginning, don't enter from the north side of the church property (like I did), but from the east. There's a TON of parking in both areas, but if you come up the sloping drive, you'll find a very nice course map just west of the barn.

Hills and variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Baskets - 18 grippy Innova Discatchers. Two different possible locations per hole. The pin positions only truly change the hole on a few holes, 3 and 4 off the top my head.

Signs - great signs that include map, distance, and par.

Tees - mix of natural and concrete tees. Mostly natural. Two tees per hole (pro and am).

Variety: a few blind shots due to elevation or trees, short holes with obstacles, several mature trees on back 9, long open holes, rolling hills, wooded holes, tunnel shots, elevation, and one hole with a water hazard.

Elevation: the most elevation in a central Indiana course (not counting Frankfort or Knightstown). Rolling hills, flat holes, major uphill shots, and long downhill shots.

Course is in two 9 hole loops. Each loop feels like a separate 9 hole course different than the other. Could play front 9 or back 9 only if short on time. Front 9 is a mix of wooded (3, 4, and start of 5) to long and open (6-8) with slight elevation (1, 5, 9). The back 9 is much more hilly. Each hole has some sort of elevation change.

Course is well maintained.

Course is easy to get to and is a nice part of town. Many nearby courses.

Pro shop on site.

Cons:

No practice basket.

Mix of tees takes away from unity of course. If this course had all concrete tees, it would be much better but might interfere with cross country path.

Course crosses a cross country path several times, holes 6-8 go around a soccer/football field and can be unplayable at times, and hole 15 goes near a softball field.

Natural tees are marked with red and blue circles that can be hard to find if grass is longer. If they had raised stones, it would make it that much less of a hassle.

Long walk between holes 9 and 10. Shortest path crosses fairway for hole 1.

Minimal trash cans and benches.

Other Thoughts:

This course was and is a great addition to the disc golf world in Indy. It's more of an intermediate course that is doable for beginners but wouldn't be too challenging for professionals.

It needs more concrete pads and a few more trees. Slowly but surely concrete pads have been replacing natural pads on the back 9.

If it is too easy, Hazel Landing is right down the road. If it is too hard, play Dillion Park or Lawrence Inlow park.

I would recommend, end this course to anybody in the area or to any beginner/intermediate players looking for a new challenge. Many of the holes are too short for pro players. I have never had a bad experience here.

Short, Fun, Family-Oriented DG 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The Hill (aptly named) is located on the property of some sort of mega-church compound. The looming church building dominates the round in the background, frowning down on heathen discers like myself. As this is a private course, play by their rules: no smoking, drinking, or cursing the Lord. Amen.
- Good use of the rolling terrain. No part of The Hill gets cra-zy with the elevation, but almost every single hole incorporates some sort of up or down. #1 and #18 provide perfect examples of the range of elevation in play. #1 plays down from the parking lot. #18 climbs back up to the top of the hill, with the basket tucked between a few large tree trunks.
- Amenities. Good baskets, adequate signage (although a touch confusing first time through it shouldn't create any real problems). Dual pin positions help add a bit of much-needed distance. Portajohns on several holes. The circle is often represented by a ring of uncut grass, which is a novel touch. We used these to "up" the challenge factor by playing them as island greens with everything else being OB.
- Several holes have more trees than the rest of the course, which is mostly open with scattered trees. These holes do a decent job of creating fun fairways and greens.

Cons:

- Despite the signage saying there were two sets of tees, there was scant (read: no) evidence of the long tees. The only thing marking the shorts is each holes sign. The natural tees are rutted and uneven in many places. Far from ideal, but also not the worst thing I've seen.
- Part of a busy multi-use park; cross-country seems to take priority, so the course could be unplayable at certain times.
- Short and repetitive. Not much of a challenge for experienced discers. Great for beginners and casual players, or if you're ace-hunting, warming up, or cooling down. I had a blast scoring 5 birdies on the back nine, and I stink at disc golf.

Other Thoughts:

- Overall, nothing is really wrong, per se, with this course. It probably accomplishes the goals of the designer (an accessible church course) that is fun and family-friendly. In that respect, it's wildly successful. But for hardened discers looking for adventure golf or a challenging round, The Hill is a slippery slope to boredom.

nice grounds, poor course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Located on very nice grounds, the land was manicured and well maintained. Cut grass is always nice to see on a disc course.

A few concrete tees on the back nine. Am and pro tees on most of the holes.

New DisCatcher baskets. Good elevation on the back nine after a flat front.

Cons:

The course design was poor in my opinion.

Several blind shots even though it was a mostly open course. No variation on the tee shots, almost every throw was the same off the tee.

Mostly dirt tee pads worn into the grass. Red ground level markers also were near the dirt tee area but were very hard to find, sometimes 40 ft from the tee sign.

The grass was cut more so for the cross country course than for the disc course which seemed odd while playing.

Other Thoughts:

I thought a lot of holes could have been designed better. Great land which could of been
utilized better.

IMHO, over rated by others here.

Cons:

Lack of concrete pads is the biggest challenge. Some have been poured already. When the pads are completed it will be much better. Would also like to see some more trees in the mix.

Pros:

Signage is very good, arrows on each pin guiding you where the next tee box is. The course is very well taken care of, shop on the grounds is excellent as well. Very open and slightly wooded. It's very good to get some exercise as well, the map of the course layout is very very good as well as coming equipped with score cards.

Cons:

Even though the outline of tee's are raised grass, the blue tee's are quite the pain to find. Spent quite sometime trying to find each blues and I've been playing here since April'ish of 12. A friend and I stopped looking for blue tees after 12. Some concrete pads there would be rather refreshing. Also, no trash cans during course play.

Other Thoughts:

I'm no pro mind you, but it's a very fun par 3 course. I enjoy the sun and the walk out there. After only playing disc golf for a few months, but quickly learning - the Hill is close by and fun. Few things could really make this very enjoyable for other newbies like myself.

Long but Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This was the first course I played. It's a long course that plays even longer in the wind. Lots of elevation changes and fairly wide open.

Cons:

The grass tees are okay but it's hard to find the tee markers in the ground. Would be nice to upgrade to concrete. The wind can make it almost impossible to score well. For first timers it can be hard to find the 2nd tee. Luckily I had a group in front of me that I was able to follow.

Other Thoughts:

The course has a cross country trail through it so watch out for runners. Also, there is a softball field near one basket on the back nine. Usually not an issue unless you are way off on your throw. Be prepared to walk up and down hills.

Pros:

Well maintained. Clean greens. Elevation changes were nice to see. Tee pads were natural, but movable so not to warn out. Multiple pin locations.

Cons:

Tee signs were nice, but some holes were blind and there was no indicator on which position the pin was in. Finding tee markers was difficult since they were marked with 4" diameter circles up to 50'-60' from the tee sign.
Lack of variety in shot needs

Other Thoughts:

I could see this being a course made for beginners. Playing the blue (long) tees, if a player is RHBH and can throw a 300'-400' hyzer there are no holes that can not be done in 2 shots. The red tees actually seemed to be more difficult even though they are shorter. Unfortunately, the length of the red tees was not much more than a putter or mid-range for the slightly advanced player.
