Excellent PNW course, very underrated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was looking through the top Washington courses page on DGCR and I was surprised to see a few courses higher on the list, and this one not at all, it deserves to be in the top 25 for sure, it is a very nice course that is emblematic of the Pacific Northwest.
-Tee signs are nice, give distance, par, and a map
-Baskets are like new, Some that are hard to see have flags, others you have to look around a little for, but you can find them relatively easily.
-Fairways: Typical of a wooded course, a few wide open grass field type holes, well maintained, limited to no garbage on the ground
-For an area, and a park, with little elevation, there is good use of mounds, divots, and hills here, I think it was hole 6 or 7 that was on a big mound that made putting a fun challenge
-Trees are well used, some holes are pretty cluttered around the green and you gotta play Plinko a little bit, but for the most part there are good trees
-Paths are marks with arrows, and are fairly well worn, which makes navigation less of a struggle
-water comes into play a little bit on hole 5, there is rough before it, like, right before it, if your disc goes in the water it is gone
-Mandos: added on some holes to separate other fairways, some are seemingly unnecessary
-

Cons:

-Tees, not clearly marked except for signs, gravel is not the best
-No benches to sit on, this is a course I played on a long driving day and it was nice to stretch out, but, a lot of people like benches to rest on
-Not a lot of variety, usually just a tunnel in the trees or a wide open bomb
-Holes 3 and 4 get really close to each other, as do 2 and 5 so you have to be really careful if you play on a crowded day

Other Thoughts:

3/4 on the new shoe index
This course is pretty under appreciated for what it is. I've played some course that seem to get more love even though they aren't as good as this one, if you are willing to make the drive, stop by!

Underrated course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

One of my favorite courses in the Puget Sound due to its variety and never being crowded. Many recent improvements to tee boxes, basket locations, and brush removal. I never lose discs here now unless they go in the river. This course is the best in the winter when brush is not dense. Fairly challenging due to trees and open holes are long.

Cons:

In the summer it can be hard to find discs sometimes but recent improvements and better maintenance are helping. You will spend some time fighting blackberry bushes here unless throws are very accurate. Every now and then discs will be lost to river. I have lost 2 or 3 in ~80 rounds.

Other Thoughts:

I like the challenge and lack of crowds. Quite often having entire course to myself.

Fun Summer/Fall course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Great mix of woods and open holes
-As summer moves on the foot traffic makes even the more challenging holes decent for finding errant discs
-most of the course in in woods which means "shade" in the hot months
-Beautiful and challenging

Cons:

-Spring and early summer the course is severely overgrown both in the woods and open making the possibility of losing discs very real.
-a lot of blackberry bushes
-This area attracts a lot of shady characters. I've never had issues but talked to a guy who's vehicle was broke into. Park in open and don't leave things in sight.
-hole 4 isn't on course map.

Other Thoughts:

This area is next to the river and as such get affected by flooding so winter and spring play can be interesting. Hole #4 doesn't show up on the course map but I have the "Udisc" app on my phone which it does show on it's map. This is a fun challenging course that changes quite a bit through the year. If you play it in March and then again in August you will most likely play some of the holes differently.

Twin Rivers is back! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Variety of Holes
-Challenging Woods Lines
-Open Field Bombs
- Not too crowded

Cons:

- Rough is a bit heavy at times
- Navigation may be tricky first time around
- Little Elevation if any

Other Thoughts:

Twin Rivers is back from the dead! After incredibly hard work by dedicated locals this course is back on it's feet. Fairways and walking paths are navigable again, the tall grass OB doesn't swallow your disc alive anymore. 16, 17, and 18 are all moved into more playable areas. City of Arlington has also stepped up and an 18th basket will be added soon. This course will test every facet of your game! The majority of the course is technical, wooded shots on a variety of lines. You will be rewarded if your shot is true off the tee. Miss your line and your bound to be looking at bogey or more. The holes that will make or break your round are the field holes with their tall grass OB. Big arms can play the risk/reward bombs for the 2, shorter arms can keep pace with good placement off the tee.

Underrated and could use some maintenance 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good Mix of holes.
Never Crowded
Pretty challenging
Good for hot days, Mostly shady and close to the river

Cons:

Hole six is a victim of river erosion
A couple of holes are really overgrown. 13 is unplayable, 16 is iffy, I didn't take a look at 17/18
Tees are marginal butt workable for the most part, you can throw from the grass on the long holes

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course and hate to see it underutilized. It has a lot of tunnel shots and blind shots with thick rough so keep a eye on your discs. There is a lot of potential with a couple of work days to clear out the overgrown holes. I think a few holes could be extended or have multiple pins. I think some of the tees need to be widened.

Needs maintenance 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The first couple holes were very promising and interesting. Some holes are along the river - beautiful. Was quiet and only saw (or heard, really) two other people trying to play.

Cons:

Several holes (6 and 7 'proper' 8, 9, 10, 16, 17, and 18) were so overgrown as to be not playable, or in some cases even navigable. Some baskets missing due (I am assuming) to vandals. Most Tees were poorly marked if at all.

Other Thoughts:

This course could be a fun and challenging course on par with the front 18 at SeaTac (Nothing long like 19-27). Similar wooded/narrow fairways with good obstacles, but it is not used enough to 'self maintain' by foot traffic, and it is not maintained enough to navigate many of the holes, let alone let your disk fly. A frustrating shame, because it couyld be so good.
3 or 4 of the back 9 holes are open with long grass (4' - 5' grass - I mean, LONG TALL GRASS) as the only obstacles, and with nicely mown fairways, but those are pretty much the only holes playable past 6 - which you throw to the 7 basket because neither the basket for 6, nor the tee for 7 are able to be used (or even found) because of the overgrown forest floor (and, I think the 6 basket was removed).
A good weekend work party lead by someone who is familiar with this how this course 'should be' could turn this into an excellent course, on par with the best I've played, but as of now, its not worth the drive if you live any farther away than downtown Arlington.
If you d brave the trip, don't go alone. Bring someone who you can trade off disc spotting duties with on most holes. Even right in the 'fairway', it is grown and rigged enough that you are likely to lose discs, and if you don't throw 'perfect' you'd find yourself sprinting from the teebox with every throw in hopes of seeing which part of the overgrown underbrush you've landed in. Send someone halfway down the fairways you can find before you throw and you'll leave with the disks you brought - it takes extra time, but so does rebuying disks, and if you are like me, some of them in your bag are just where you want them and you'd be upset to lose them (and they are probably the ones you'd reach into your bag for to make that long narrow shot with 3 bends and 8 trees along the path.

Interesting play style 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hole 18 was directly beside the river and offers great views and wonderful afternoon sun. I really liked the variety of holes with some tight technical aspects and open disc-chucking holes.

Cons:

The tee off pads were a bit sloppy, but throwing from beside them in the grass worked to alleviate that problem. A couple of the holes likely experienced vandalism and were missing the tee info making the movement in between holes a bit more troublesome.

Other Thoughts:

If you're up in the area, take advantage of this course. It is fun because even if it is crowded, there are always areas where folks can have some privacy.

A fun round if you have a spotter and some time 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Twin Rivers is located in a park that offers exactly what disc golf courses need: There are heavily wooded holes, holes with danger of losing a disc in the river (aka water hazard), and wide open holes across a field with enough rough bordering the fairway to keep it interesting. None of the holes are long enough for an advanced player to truly air it out, but two of the field holes are slightly uphill and will still challenge the average player. As I'm not advanced, and most people playing here won't be advanced, I won't review it for the advanced.

There is a map by the trail to hole one. Although this map is outdated, it does help to have it for most of the course. Plenty of parking is available and the park also offers softball fields and soccer fields if you want to go out and work on your drives.

Twin Rivers is an extremely challenging wooded course that will challenge most aspects of your game. The biggest challenge will be to your accuracy. The fairways are defined for the most part, with only hole 16 having trees in the actual fairway. The rest of the wooded holes have narrow fairways with plenty of "tree hitting" potential.

Cons:

This course is just too overgrown to play alone. You know the instant that you step up to hole 1 that you're in for it. You essentially throw an S-curve down a very narrow fairway bordered by plenty of trees and underbrush. The underbrush doesn't get any lighter for the rest of the course. Even the four open holes have 6' high grass waiting to eat any errant shots. In the infamous words of Scott Papa, "The best way not to lose a disc is to land on the fairway." Heed Scott's advice and you'll enjoy this course a lot more. If you don't heed his advice, you'll find that the underbrush is a con. I get the feeling that this course doesn't get much play, because the brush hasn't been trampled down any of the times that I've been there.

The teepads are atrocious. They've adopted the "bury some logs in the ground and call it a teepad" approach here. They were dry when I was there last, but they do tend to collect water in the rainy season and to be somewhat dangerous for a run up.

The baskets are all great... Except for the two that weren't there at all. Luckily the thieves decided to leave the pole behind so we had something to throw at. Unluckily for us, they were thieves.

It's finally listed on here as a 17 hole, which is unfortunately true. This is where the inaccurate map by hole 1 will mislead you. Hole number 8 does not exist. There's no teepad, no basket, nothing. The map will send you to the parking lot. If you follow the natural flow of the course from basket 6 to teepad 7 you're fine. But then walk part of the way back toward the teepad and hook down a trail to your left and it will lead you to teepad 9. Don't waste your time looking. 8 isn't there. It apparently went the way of the 7 and 9 baskets.

Hole 13 is a tough one too. I think the tee is right up against the river for a short 150'ish hole. If it is there is no fairway whatsoever. It makes for a fun putter/mid hole, but I don't know if I played it right. Walk back toward hole 12 from the 13 basket once you're done and turn left at the T in the path. Follow that on until you reach a fork in the path. Take the right fork to find teepad 14.

Hole 18 is a short hike away from the parking lot, and that hike will take you across the fairways for 16, 14, 10, and 11.

Other Thoughts:

This course has some serious potential, but it needs some TLC and some more traffic to beat down some of that underbrush. It's a fun course if you bring a spotter and the risk:reward ratio here can be through the roof. I'm just afraid that it's too far from everything to ever fully achieve its potential as a destination course. Without traffic they won't raise the money for new baskets or better teepads either. If they do get it back up to an 18 and actually get some decent teepads and baskets in I would gladly raise my rating... But with a stretch of three holes with no baskets (and one hole in there just gone completely) it's hard to rate it higher.

If you're coming from the Seattle area I highly recommend a warmup round at Silver Lake or Ferguson and also a round at Lake Stevens in order to make a great day of it.

Twin Personalities 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 26, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course was built during the 2 years I lived in Arlington. I was excited by the potential I saw in the very rough course, but if you think its a disc-hunting course now, you should have played those first few years.
Some things have come to pass. The fairways are settling in nicely, with much leaf cover in the fairway instead of a wide variety of low shrubbery. As a result, the holes are showing more distinction from one another. There's a nice mix of woods and field holes, left and right breaks, airing it out and technical shots. Not much in the way of elevation change but for a small hilltop basket. Its still an undiscovered gem of tranquility, despite the proximity of the state route. Quality baskets. Nice map facing the parking lot.
One of the few courses in the NW where hardwoods are prevalent, which can make for beautiful sunny fall rounds. Never crowded.
Bathrooms at the ballfield, but often closed Nov.-April.

Cons:

Tees need concrete, brick, gravel or sand, anything but the muddy pond that exists in each tee spot. The fairways could be widened, and a woodchipper employed to great effect to alleviate some of the underlying fairway muckiness. The first field hole doesn't show up till #10---it would be much better to get a strong drive in by hole # 3-5 or so. When I was last there, high water from the winter before had eaten #6, which had yet to be replaced.

Other Thoughts:

I don't get to visit the course but 1-2 times a year now, so I hope the disc community can continue to develop Twin Rivers into a road trip destination.
A wide variety of stores/restaurants 1/2 mile away.

Down the River and Through the Woods..... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 18, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has the extremes of thick wooded holes and a group of "links" style holes that play through open mowed lawns surrounded by tall thick (OB) grass. None of the distances are extreme, and even the links holes in the fields are managable if you don't lose your disc in that thick grass. You will be challenged with twisty technical shots of all kinds in the woods (Most of them are right or left turning shots, with a few that require straight or S-Curve shots) You will use lots of other stuff when you save from the rough.

My favorite hole was #7 which is about 270' with mostly open woody fairway which has a group of guard trees that start about 40' from the pin which is set on a small slope. It has some nice little clump of trees behind the basket which are tricky and fun to putt through (with a drop off behind).

Cons:

In the summer the rough is thick with shrubs and sticker bushes. You will be looking for discs and would be wise to use spotters. In the winter, the rough is much more managable, but the course can be very muddy or even flooded.

The tee pads really need an update - whether they become rubber or concrete. They get water filled when it's wet and when they're dry, they're a bit rutty.

Other Thoughts:

This course becomes more enjoyable the more you play it. It inspires new lines of attack and also good course management skills.

There is talk about refining the 4 field holes and combining them into 2. I think this would be a positive move, as three of the existing holes are almost exactly the same. Also, mowing defined landing zones at a couple of key distances would add a reward, instead of forcing a perfect narrow line for the entire fairway.

Pros:

I enjoyed the variety of the holes. There are some decent long-shots as well as some easy Birdies. It's fairly easy for an amateur or intermediate to score in the single digits over par. The wooded areas make it fun for the more technical, accurate throwers.

Cons:

Crappy tee-pads. Underbrush. Waist-high grass. Be prepared to spend a half-hour, at least, looking for your discs. Hole 6 was missing, last I played.

Twin Rivers 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 20, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is located on the banks of the Stillaguamish River in a nice wooded park that combines for a nice environment while playing here. Has a good mixture of left handed, right handed, short/technical, and long/open holes that makes the course well rounded. The course gets little traffic and navigation is fairly simple. There is a good amount of challenge involved.

Cons:

The course is a disc eater, there is so much brush and stickers that almost every throw your disc is going to land in something and a number of times during a round you can find yourself searching for a while which becomes irritating. The open holes have waist high grass so even the open holes you can end up searching for a disc. The tee pads are natural dirt pads and when it's rainy they are slippery so beware. During the rainy months the course gets flooded by the nearby river making it muddy and less fun to play. The banks are eroding and there is some danger of falling in the river. There were some benches when the course first went in but they have been vandalized.

Other Thoughts:

A couple of holes have been eliminated due to erosion so we'll see what's going to happen there. This course is much more enjoyable in the winter months because the underbrush is mostly gone.

Little muddy out there. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is fairly well marked, with some signs on trees to lead you from basket to next tee. A few open holes, but mostly tough tunnel type shots in the trees to challenge your accuracy. Nice to play fairly near the river with little current chance of going in the river.

Cons:

One hole appeared to have been pulled out, as there was a basket laying on the ground near the starting area, and it looked like you currently play 7 tee to hole 8. Also, a few holes have changed since the online information and map were created, though it wasn't too tough to puzzle out where to be most of the time. After our recent rains, the course was muddy and some of the tee boxes were pretty wet, also. However, the mud didn't make the course unplayable, just more challenging.

Other Thoughts:

Looks like a course that is kept up fairly well, and unfortunately, at the time of day I played, no one else around to talk to about it, but if it were closer, I would make it a part of my regular rotation.

Hwy 530 Bridge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 8, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Twin Rivers has a good mix of distances and doglegs with a good flow and a non confusing layout. The courses is in a mostly untouched natural setting with a few park amenities. The course was well balanced and seemed good for all levels of play. There is good parking with the lot right next to the first tee. The group I played with came to the consensus that this was their favorite course of that day (we mostly played courses just north of Seattle, I liked Terrace Creek). What I think makes this course stand out in my memories is number three, which has a basket placement near a bridge and river. The river is a dominating boundary for many of the holes on the course. The course has a few holes that are out in the open for those who need to bomb out. The alleys in the woods are pretty tight and logical so in my opinion there is little chance of getting too lost. The kiosk has a map incase you forget to print out the one from here.

Cons:

Some of the vines here are insane and will provide a good workout for disc retrieval. I know that this next "con" is most likely a unique experience to me, but on the day I was here the restroom walls were completely covered with bugs and spiders, it was an awful experience. When I played it was very wet and the boxes were as you could guess, big puddles. I wish that Washington would pave all their teepads. Distances would have been a mystery without a map on the holes missing signs. The brochure says that the courses is in a flood plain, and judging by JR Stengele's course note, it has made things much worse than when I played.

Other Thoughts:

I played five courses on the day I played here and this was the last one. The sun set on us and we played in the twilight the last few holes. Because the park is in a nice natural setting and I played near sundown, the pictures I got from this course are amazing. I've wanted to come back here for quite some time. I imagine there will have to be some sort of clean up effort after the flooding that has occurred. Hopefully a local can update us on the situation.

Stillaguamish River Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course sits in a large park next to the Stillaguamish River (love those Northwest Indian names). It's mostly a wooded, technical course with four holes playing out across an open field. The baskets were good, the teepads are dirt and footing was good on the day that I played. I wonder about the footing on a rainy day? The course has a nice mix of hyser and anhyser shots, mixing the length of the holes well. My favorite was # 4, a simple little anhyser shot around some trees. # 4 and especially # 6 are scary, in that if your disc sails left, it's in the river, sailing away on it's way to Puget Sound. This course definitely has it's share of rough, treachorous nasty rough. Fortunately, when I played in early October, discs were fairly easy to spot/find in the rough.

Cons:

Each hole is sponsered by a local business and has a tee sign. But only about 1/2 of the tee signs remain, the rest probably thrown in the river by vandals. I'm sure the teepads would get muddy during some of our wetter weather. Concrete pads will be a nice addition at some point. Navigation was fairly easy although I did get lost once, went the wrong way at an intersecting trail and ended up playing 3-4 holes out of turn. This course could benefit from one of the locals taking a sharpie and writing the # and distance on those tee poles where the signs are missing and by writing the #'s on the baskets themselves and maybe writing an arrow pointing the way to the next tee. The little arrows up in the trees helped me with the navigation but I couldn't always spot them.

Other Thoughts:

The holes on this course tended to blend into three distinct groups for me: the decently, long ( 260-280') hyser shots through the woods, the shorter (200-225") anhyser holes and then the four open field holes. These open field holes have green, grass fairways mowed out of 2-3' tall field grasses. I'd reccommend this course from May to September. I think you'd enjoy it more when it's dryer.

Arlington is a easy to navigate course, there's so much rough you have to follow the trail, and there are arrows on the trees near the baskets to show the next tee. It's got a nice mix, very technical at times. Distance varies, nothing too short (Hole 4 is the shortest one but interesting, there's a row of 5 trees in front of you, you can just zip it thru straight up or go around on the open left side.). The fairways are clear but can be very narrow at times, and be very careful to stay out of the rough and suggest good spotters before you throw. Trust me you WILL go into the Rough more than once in a round. Baskets are nicely placed. One basket No. 7 is on a large molehill, watch for roll aways. Myself and a few masters got a couple birdies in this course, and they didn't come easy.

Cons:

Blackberry & the Rough. In the summertime, if your disc goes into the rough you can kiss it good bye. Please do Spot every hole, even the open holes w/ tall grass. In the winter, it's manageable but the tees and trails get very muddy. Come prepared. I agree w/ JR Stengele about the arrows. Hard to tell if they're for the next Tee or if it's a Mando.

Other Thoughts:

It's wild, flat and strongly wooded. Mostly cottonwood and various trees. Sometimes the grass is tall. Runs by a large fast moving river. There's 4 open meadow holes that let you air it out for 400 yards. Personally, I find these the hardest. Be lucky to get a bogey on each one. There's no OB in this course, unless you lose your disc in the blackberry or the river and have to take a drop. No real water hazards. Arlington is a wild and beautiful course and defintely worth visiting.
