Pros:
Amount/Use of elevation 10/10. In stark contrast with the other courses in Manhattan (and most of central or western Kansas) this course has tons of elevation change. This provides a different kind of challenge for many players in the area. The elevation is pretty varied, with 1, 4, and 9 being very downhill, and 2, 3, and 7 being very uphill. 5 and 6 also play back and forth with a sidehill. The downhill on hole 1 is pretty unique too in that the dropoff isn't until about 100 feet off the tee pad.
Condition of baskets/tees 10/10. Both are in great shape. A couple of tees are shaped so that they provide a good path for a runup to either of the pin positions, almost like two tee pads on top of each other pointing different directions.
Variety of openness 10/10. It is very rare for a 9 hole course to have enough variety for me to give this a 10, but this course does. 1, 2, and 8 are pretty technical, 3, 4, 6 and 9 are more open but still have enough hazards to keep things interesting, and the others are somewhere in between.
Course maintenance 9/10. Course is generally clean and the grass is decently well mowed. Both times I've been it was a little longer than ideal but good enough. The signage and shelter near the start are also in good shape.
Use of obstacles 9/10. Overall this course does a great job of using all the obstacles available to it. Every tree/bush in the middle of the park comes into play on one hole or another. My nitpick is that they maybe could've used a little bit more of the space in the woods. A lot of holes have the edge of the woods come into play as a boundary.
Navigation 7/10. Both the course map by the first tee and the tee signs at each hole are well done and easy to read. That said, the flow is a little strange in places. After hole 3 you could very easily go to the 9th tee instead of the 4th, and after hole 4 you walk past the hole 7 tee to get to the 5th hole. In addition, many of the baskets can't be seen from the tee (1, 5, 6, 8, and 2 long), so on 5 and 6 you either need to look for them earlier in the round, or walk up to see which spot they are in. Arrows to the next tee and some way to signal which location the basket is in would improve this.
Variety of distances 7/10. There are more holes on the short side, but hole 9 (and hole 5 if in the long position) give you a chance to really air one out. Hole 3 and 7 being so uphill make them play longer as well.
Reasonably challenging all levels 7/10. This course is short enough that beginners won't get frustrated, but technical enough that more experienced players will still find some challenge. It's probably the best for intermediate players.
Cons:
Alternate hole positions 3/10. 5 of the 9 holes have one alternate pin position. In my opinion holes 2, 5, and 6 are done very well and significantly change the hole. However, hole 4 and especially hole 7 feel pretty much the same regardless of which spot they're in. I'm not really sure why the other holes don't have alternate spots, it seems like there is plenty of space on all but hole 3. I think giving 8 a long pin, or 9 a shorter one in the woods on the right, or 1 a pin on either side to force a different angle, or moving on of the spots on 4 back into the woods would help a lot and utilize more of the wooded area here.
Finding discs 4/10. Despite having no water hazards, you may spend a decent amount of time looking for discs. The woods are fairly thick if you go off the fairways and as mentioned before several holes have blind shots so you may not see your discs land.
Comfort while playing 4/10. It's only a 9 hole course, and there is a decent amount of shade, but the elevation plus the hike at the start makes it so having a bench or two on the course would be really helpful (there is a shelter near the start that is good for if you're playing it multiple times). Maybe one on the trail you cross from 3-4 and again 8-9, and one at the 6 tee would be perfect. A water fountain or a restroom could be good as well.
Variety of shot paths 5/10. There are multiple holes that force a left to right shot (2 short, 5, 6 right), but not really any that force a right to left. 1 and 8 pretty much require you to throw straight, and the others are open enough you can throw whatever you want. I think the course would benefit from having at least one left to right shot, even if it's just for an alternate pin.
Decisionmaking required 5/10. A couple of the holes do a good job of making you think about what kind of shot to throw and giving risk/reward options, but more holes having this could make the course even better.
Other Thoughts:
Overall challenge 4/10
More exact rating 3.53
There are no major problems with this course, and it provides good variety when compared with the other Manhattan courses. The fact that it's 9 holes makes it ideal for a quick round.
