There ARE hills in Kansas 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Amount/Use of elevation 10/10. In stark contrast with the other courses in Manhattan (and most of central or western Kansas) this course has tons of elevation change. This provides a different kind of challenge for many players in the area. The elevation is pretty varied, with 1, 4, and 9 being very downhill, and 2, 3, and 7 being very uphill. 5 and 6 also play back and forth with a sidehill. The downhill on hole 1 is pretty unique too in that the dropoff isn't until about 100 feet off the tee pad.

Condition of baskets/tees 10/10. Both are in great shape. A couple of tees are shaped so that they provide a good path for a runup to either of the pin positions, almost like two tee pads on top of each other pointing different directions.

Variety of openness 10/10. It is very rare for a 9 hole course to have enough variety for me to give this a 10, but this course does. 1, 2, and 8 are pretty technical, 3, 4, 6 and 9 are more open but still have enough hazards to keep things interesting, and the others are somewhere in between.

Course maintenance 9/10. Course is generally clean and the grass is decently well mowed. Both times I've been it was a little longer than ideal but good enough. The signage and shelter near the start are also in good shape.

Use of obstacles 9/10. Overall this course does a great job of using all the obstacles available to it. Every tree/bush in the middle of the park comes into play on one hole or another. My nitpick is that they maybe could've used a little bit more of the space in the woods. A lot of holes have the edge of the woods come into play as a boundary.

Navigation 7/10. Both the course map by the first tee and the tee signs at each hole are well done and easy to read. That said, the flow is a little strange in places. After hole 3 you could very easily go to the 9th tee instead of the 4th, and after hole 4 you walk past the hole 7 tee to get to the 5th hole. In addition, many of the baskets can't be seen from the tee (1, 5, 6, 8, and 2 long), so on 5 and 6 you either need to look for them earlier in the round, or walk up to see which spot they are in. Arrows to the next tee and some way to signal which location the basket is in would improve this.

Variety of distances 7/10. There are more holes on the short side, but hole 9 (and hole 5 if in the long position) give you a chance to really air one out. Hole 3 and 7 being so uphill make them play longer as well.

Reasonably challenging all levels 7/10. This course is short enough that beginners won't get frustrated, but technical enough that more experienced players will still find some challenge. It's probably the best for intermediate players.

Cons:

Alternate hole positions 3/10. 5 of the 9 holes have one alternate pin position. In my opinion holes 2, 5, and 6 are done very well and significantly change the hole. However, hole 4 and especially hole 7 feel pretty much the same regardless of which spot they're in. I'm not really sure why the other holes don't have alternate spots, it seems like there is plenty of space on all but hole 3. I think giving 8 a long pin, or 9 a shorter one in the woods on the right, or 1 a pin on either side to force a different angle, or moving on of the spots on 4 back into the woods would help a lot and utilize more of the wooded area here.

Finding discs 4/10. Despite having no water hazards, you may spend a decent amount of time looking for discs. The woods are fairly thick if you go off the fairways and as mentioned before several holes have blind shots so you may not see your discs land.

Comfort while playing 4/10. It's only a 9 hole course, and there is a decent amount of shade, but the elevation plus the hike at the start makes it so having a bench or two on the course would be really helpful (there is a shelter near the start that is good for if you're playing it multiple times). Maybe one on the trail you cross from 3-4 and again 8-9, and one at the 6 tee would be perfect. A water fountain or a restroom could be good as well.

Variety of shot paths 5/10. There are multiple holes that force a left to right shot (2 short, 5, 6 right), but not really any that force a right to left. 1 and 8 pretty much require you to throw straight, and the others are open enough you can throw whatever you want. I think the course would benefit from having at least one left to right shot, even if it's just for an alternate pin.

Decisionmaking required 5/10. A couple of the holes do a good job of making you think about what kind of shot to throw and giving risk/reward options, but more holes having this could make the course even better.

Other Thoughts:

Overall challenge 4/10
More exact rating 3.53

There are no major problems with this course, and it provides good variety when compared with the other Manhattan courses. The fact that it's 9 holes makes it ideal for a quick round.

Warner's a Winner 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Short and sweet, Warner Park is about as good as any 9 hole course I have played. Starting with the great setup with concrete tees, nice signs and great baskets.
There are alternate basket locations on several holes. All holes are par 3, and there is a pretty good mix of throws. After a short walk from the parking lot you will see a course map, but the layout isn't that hard to follow.

The first hole is a fun shot into the woods that drops off once you cross the tree line. Not long, but if you miss the window it could be tough to save par.

Hole 2 is like one in reverse. Reachable, as long as you make it up the hill and out of the trees. Another good little hole.

#3 crosses the open grass and the basket is perched on the hillside. As long as you don't overshoot it, trees should not interfere much.

Hole 4 is an elevated tee and the line is open most of the way, but trees surround the pin location making it important to get the proper distance and angle if you want the birdie.

5 is longer than most of the other holes, but it has enough space to get good distance off the tee. Again, as you near the pins, trees will come into play and force some shot shaping.

Number 6 is pretty open, but a good patch of tall grass short of the pin can put you in the rough and make it a little more difficult.

7 is a good birdie chance, open and not that long, with pin positions on the slope before going into the trees.

Hole 8 is the hole tucked into the woods atop the hill, and isn't tough to reach if you stay in the middle of the fairway.

The big finale is hole 9. It tees from the hill and covers a lot of ground as you head back to the parking lot. The grass is wide open, but there is a lot of it. The approach requires you to hit a gap in a scattering of trees, but it isn't all that tight.

Cons:

It's only 9 holes, goes way too fast. The difficulty level is moderate, good for newbies and recreational players, but not a test for the best players.

The park was pretty crowded with disc golfers on a nice Sunday afternoon. Busy times may cause waiting on groups.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely worth a play if you are in the neighborhood. Really took the sting out of a University Park beatdown.
I was 4 over, no birdies, but found it to be an enjoyable round all the same.

Lots of variety, lots of fun! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Lots of variety in the hole styles
-Close to town, easy to find
-Often not super busy, don't wait on people hardly ever
-Very clean park, well maintained also
-Almost no Poison Ivy!

Cons:

-Only 9 holes
-Wind will be a big factor if you play on a gusty day
-lots of evergreen trees, very little mercy if you throw into them
-tons of elevation changes

Other Thoughts:

As stated above, if you play on a windy day you will have lots of crosswind on holes 3, 4 and 7. The wind channels through the valley of the park which makes these few open holes quite a doozy if you play on a windy day. Overall a great course that is always fun to play.

Pros:

Good variety of shots very tricky holes on most. huge elevation changes. easily the toughest course ive played which can be good or bad.

Cons:

it was extremely muddy so it caused a hazard to where it is very easy to fall down a rocky hill and hurt yourself. some tees were hard to find and some baskets were hidden so well i had to scout them out before teeing off at each hole.

Other Thoughts:

i would recommend this course for experienced players that have a high fitness level as it is long and you have to do some pretty serious hiking in between some holes.

Gem tucked away in Manhattan! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice nine hole course!! This was well worth the time. Even though it's only nine holes, it feels like a lot longer course due to the layout.

Great use of elevation!! Not everything is flat in Kansas, and this course proves it. Excellent job to the course designers for working with the land they had available.

Multiple pin positions keep it interesting. They also change the way you play many of the holes, which I really like to see. Signage is bright, clear, and in great shape. Big shout out to the course maintenance!

Great layout, with a great mix of open and tight shots. Although this park is super open and has one of the largest open areas in Manhattan, the designers used the the surrounding wooded areas expertly to really blend the course well. You forget how open it is most of the time you're playing.

Course was very well maintained, with tee pads, signs, and baskets in great condition when I played in July. Nobody there, however, it was also summertime in Manhattan so it's usually pretty slow.

Decent range of short and long shots. The 9th hole is absolutely gorgeous, with a nice shot over a large bluff to finish off the round.

Although this course is very close to most of the development over by Seth Child, it feels incredibly remote and makes for great gameplay.

While there are no benches ON the course that I saw, there is a nice area with a shelter that you can rest at before and after your round.

Very good maintenance! Well mowed, and generally well trimmed back. The trees that weren't trimmed just made for good obstacles.

Overall just a super enjoyable course design. I loved the way this course flowed, and it made for a super enjoyable round.

Cons:

The navigation, especially towards the end of the course, can get choppy and frustrating. Nothing I couldn't handle, but it did make gameplay slightly frustrating. Some "next tee" signs would have been super helpful at the baskets.

A fair amount of the last part of the course does play close to itself, which could get annoying if there's a lot of people on the course.

While it IS a gorgeous park in my opinion, most of the course plays around the edges, so it doesn't have the "walk through the course" that you might expect at a longer course.

Other Thoughts:

This course is located on the southwest edge of town, near the Target. The best way to find this course? Search for the Arby's, and then find the road behind it. You will see a small parking lot. Be advised, you do have to hike a bit to get to the first hole.

Even though this course is just nine holes, it was a super enjoyable play and really felt like a longer course than it was. I thoroughly enjoyed feeling like I was in the middle of nowhere. This course played super well, was very enjoyable, and very well designed. I can't wait to play it again! Happy discing!

Pros:

Great 9 hole with a potential for another 9. Nice mix of shots and elevation. Appears to be pet friendly. Open shots, hyzer shots, annie shots, wodded shots, just a good mix for what it is.

Cons:

Needs better signage. Small parking lot kind of tucked away. Flags on baskets would be nice.

Other Thoughts:

Well worth playing if you are in the area. Can't wait until they add another nine (I'm sure it will eventually happen). HAPPY DISCIN!

Short and technical 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is a different animal from other courses in Kansas. The holes were short, most didn't go over 300 feet, but they were very technical. Often this meant throwing around pine trees(more dense than deciduous ones), throwing at very different elevations or both. If you play a lot of disc golf in Kansas, this course may provide a unique and different challenge not seen at most other courses in this state. A couple of holes sat on very big hills and provided and awesome view. Unlike Tuttle Creek this course requires more finesse and utility shots. Accuracy and creativity are definitely required to do well here.

Cons:

My biggest complaint is how the baskets were arranged, they were often difficult to find. Sometimes it seemed like they weren't there. With it being my first time and from out of town this was very frustrating. The baskets should be marked better, out of town visitors would have a much better time. Next we played after Manhattan received about 5 inches of snow. Most of it had melted, but with there being no grass from the cold weather and pine trees making it impossible for anything to grow on the ground, there was a lot of mud. I'm sure this would happen after a good rain also. I'd recommend wearing a pair of shoes that you don't mind getting dirty or having a pair of cleats.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of hiking was involved. You have to walk a ways before you get to the first hole, which is quite different. This course is only 9 but it would be interesting to see it turned into an 18 hole course. If you ever are near Manhattan and want a different kind of challenge give this course a go.

Best course for miles around! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 1, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Brand new course so it is very nice and well maintained. This course is also on the far west edge of town up on a big hill and is very isolated. It is a very tranquil spot if you are up on the course by yourself or with few others. There are great elevation changes on this course, some up, some down. There are also a good mix of holes in the trees (mainly 1, 2, and 8) and out in the open. This course has two holes (4 and 9) that are teed from the very top of the highest hill, and this is not only a great place to tee off, but a beautiful view of the rolling hills as well. Number 9 will have you wanting to throw every disc you have from the tee as it is a 500' + bomb off of the top of the hill. Gorgeous area and course.

Cons:

Tee pads are nice, but could be a little bigger. This is a great area, but there are no restrooms and I believe just one trashcan at the start. It is high on the outer hills so it can become very windy up here at times, making for a frustrating day. Parking and signs are a problem. If you don't know where this course is exactly, then you will not be coming across it. It is located behind business on the west end of town, and there are no signs for the course or parking area at all.

Other Thoughts:

Park in the gravel parking area or by the Arby's (as there has been construction at times) if needed. It should be mentioned that you have to walk 1/4 mile or so up the hill on the trails to get to this course. Don't pass this up though, as it is totally worth the bad parking and little hike. This, I believe, is the most fun course in the area.

Pros:

Easy to navigate, well maintained, great changes in elevation (especially for KS), very scenic tee boxes, good mixture of short and long. Most baskets are protected by elevation or trees.

Cons:

Long hike to get to course, wind tunnels are unpredictable, parking is terrible. Would love to see 9 more fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Solid course that uses elevation. Warner is a huge park so hopefully an expansion is in the works.

Cons:

Hole 1 and Hole 2 are in among heavy tree and require some/lots of luck or GREAT accuracy. I did kinda like this challenge but it can really hurt your round fast if you hit a few trees in a row.

It was good exercise 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 4, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has great views. The teeboxes are concrete and like new. Signage is good and offers a lot of tough elevation challenges you don't get in other courses in the area. The fairways are maintained. Chainstar baskets with bright neon flags. Offers good holes for both right/left hand throwers and backhands/sidearm throws. Picnic area is nice.

Cons:

The driving situation and small parking behind the Arby's make for some confusion. The hike up the hill to the course was downright exhausting. I was unfortunate to play after some snow and rain so mud was everywhere. some steps or handrails would be nice. The layout is ok but most of the holes feel like the elevation changes are forced instead of natural.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed playing here despite the long hike and redundant elevated baskets and holes. The tree tunnels are no joke it will test your game despite not being long. Not a beginners course in anyway and not a course you play unless you want to get in a good hike as well.

Cons:

Only nine holes, spent lots of time searching high grass due to elevation and misjudged windy shots, very popular place and crowds up, hole 7 completely out of sequence,

Other Thoughts:

This is the most challenging nine hole in town. Couple holes are complete blind shots. This is the rare course where after driving, you'll want to drive again from the same tee.

Pros:

Fun elevation course, shorter up hills and longer down hills, make all holes plausible to hit par. Very secluded, with some tight tree shots. Directions to each tee box's that take you on hiking trails in between.

Cons:

No flags on the pins, and some baskets are close to each other, so you don't know which one to throw too (number on basket, but have to walk to it to read it). Short, but quite a bit of walking involved. There is no in between, either a wide open shot, or you are throwing into a mess of trees. Takes more luck than skill on hole one.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 15, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Practice basket near shelter is good for warm up game of horse, there are a couple of trash cans and a shelter here also.
For a nine hole course it offers a good variety of shots and much more elevation change than any other local courses. I get to use a few discs out here that dont get to see much action around town.
Good layout without much confusion between holes and although the park is relatively small, it is easy to keep your disc out of the middle of someone elses game on a bad drive.
Very close to residential area on one side and retail on the other, but it still has a very peaceful feel to it any time of the day.
Update: Brand new concrete teepads, and new course sign!

Cons:

Although the Fairways are well kept, a misplaced drive in the rough often times seems to dissappear in the tall grass, however the grass is trimmed in the fall and presents no problem for a large part of the year. Although the short hike from the parking lot to the course is nothing for an average person to sweat over, I think a couple steps on the slippery muddy spots would be helpful.
There are also no restrooms on site, so plan accordingly.

Other Thoughts:

Although not particularly impressive or anything to write home about, this course is a lot of fun. If you are looking for something to play while passing through town, I would reccomend Warner Park.

First Ever Review of this Course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 7, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are two major down hill shots that are really fun, they are almost "cliff shots". There are also three heavily wooded fairways that are very technical. This course offers a variety of tree and elevation challenges which are unique from other Manhattan, KS courses.

Cons:

Small 2 minute hike from the car, BASKETS ARE NOT VISIBLE FROM THE NEARBY ROAD. However, it helps build some excitement and it gets you warmed up to play the game.

Other Thoughts:

Unlike when this course first opened, the fairways are now mowed on a regular basis. So, if you stopped playing because of the tall grass you may want to give it another go.
