A simple, 90% wooded short course where few shots require more than one rudimentally shaped shot drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Next Tee arrows hung on almost every basket. Navigating the course is simple, even with leaves down.

- Difficult to lose discs, as the only water on the course is a series of extremely shallow creeks, and the undergrowth is well-maintained

- Two open holes start the round and let you hone your accuracy, then the woods begin for the rest of the round. Terrain is not very taxing, so you won't leave the round worn out.

Cons:

- Course is one the busier ones in the area, and I don't think I've ever had the course to myself without encountering other players.

- Players with big arms looking for a challenge will not find it on this course. All the shots are very similar without much shaping. So players at a higher skill level than I might get bored quickly.

Other Thoughts:

- As other have indicated, the first hole isn't where you think it is. The tee box is between the parking lot and the road on the FAR left side of the property. The first basket is on the "island" of grass in the middle of the parking lot and driveway in front of the church. From there you head towards the small bulletin board for hole number two, the last open hole on the course. It's all woods from here.

- Tee boxes are mostly pavers, with a few exceptions. #17 is elevated, so don't stride long, or lose an ankle. #12 has been the victim of some wear and tear, and is a mesh overlay on top of what used to be pavers.

- Most memorable holes: #6 - an uphill shot over a creek and valley where you can really grip it and rip it, as the creek is only in play if something went horribly wrong with your tee shot. #7 Is the come-back reverse version of 6: Downhill with a creek at the end. #10 - A 110-foot par 3 where you throw over a downed tree and between two mandos. The mandatory gap is around 20-feet, adding a little bit of pressure to an obvious ace opportunity.

- All-in-all, it's a nice course to go spend an afternoon at.

Discin' at the Break of Dawn 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 28, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Located just minutes off 421 and I-40, Sunrise UMC isn't your typical church course. With some nice land and elevation, this is a charming 12-hole layout.
- As of December '20, this is now a 12-hole layout. Clearly the extra three holes were recently added. With this addition, the first hole now tees off alongside the main road. With a basket next to the parking lot, there may be times you need to skip this hole if there are a lot of cars here.
- After a simple, straight ahead open hole on #2, you're in the woods for the rest of the round. Prepare to throw a lot of mid-ranges and putters from here on out.
- This course is really highlighted by two quality holes, a couple more decent ones, and the rest. The two best holes - #6 & 10 - along with #7, are what players will remember about this course. As for holes such as #3, 5, and 12, those all blend together.
- #6 is a fun, multi-disc off the tee type of hole. It's a 235 foot, over a small creek, uphill shot to a basket tucked behind a couple trees. No worries about sailing long here so be as aggressive as you want off the tee. A good hole to birdie and one that players will be aiming straight for the chains.
- #7 is a good compliment to the previous one. It's a downhill, tighter fairway, 205 foot hole with a basket tucked to the right at the end. Another hole that one can have an easy birdie putt. The difference here is that an aggressive shot could sail long or in some rough, killing your birdie chances.
- The boom or bust hole on this course, and clearly its signature, is #10. It's only 222 feet, and it plays shorter with its downhill slope. The fairway, and gravity are going to push your RHBH shot back to the left while the basket to straight to slightly right. To top it off, you've got an OB creek with a decent drop off (4 - 5 feet) just behind the basket. The classic hole where you're begging for your disc to get down the instant it's off your fingers.
- Nice, basic tee signs make this an easy course to navigate blind. Tee pads are in good shape as well.
- The church has loaner discs at the kiosk. Fantastic way to introduce families to the game. Unfortunately, these discs tend to wander off over time so here's hoping locals aren't deterred and keep it stocked.

Cons:

There's not a single glaring issue with this course. It's essentially maxed out its potential. Look no further than the fact you're playing alongside someone's backyard on #10.
- The first tee isn't easily located. From the parking lot you see a kiosk and a tee, which we would assume is #1. It's actually #2 aka the old first tee. This points you back to the first tee. And that single basket by itself in an island of grass in the parking lot? It's not a practice basket. It's the first tee.
- Holes play close together in spots. One bad skip off a tree and you could be on a different fairway. It would be an issue if the course is packed as you may need to keep an eye out for stray discs.
- Stray discs may be a bit tricky to retrieve in spots. On #10, for example, anything sailing long is in or over the creek. Long and to the right and there's a downed tree to contend with. Could be a discouragement for the same beginners who are also borrowing discs from the kiosk.
- No amenities here, but you're exactly a half mile to a shopping center where you can find what you need.

Other Thoughts:

Sunrise is a quality beginner-friendly course. It hits the mark in achieving its goal.
- #4 is another nice short downhill tee shot. #8 & 11 offer good challenge as uphill holes. #8 especially has a tight, s-curved fairway.
- This is a quick round. It took me 33 minutes to play and that includes searching for a disc buried under the leaves on #10. Thanks to my fellow disc golfer who came from #6 to help me find it.
- Looking at the Google Map of the course, I was shocked how little wooded area this course actually uses. Looking at the woods, there are neighborhoods on all sides. With the exception of the right side of #10, you feel like you're further out in the woods than you actually are.
- I couldn't tell you if the extra holes add much to this layout. Other than #1, I don't have a clue what other two holes are new.
- If you're a local, this is good for a quick round or two. You've got some solid choices for other courses nearby between Winston-Salem and Yadkinville. Get introduced to the game at this church, and when you're ready for more, try your hand somewhere else.

Nice 9-hole track 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Sunrise UMC is a fun little 9-hole track that plays in the woods behind the church (except for hole #1, which is smack dab in the front yard -- and major props to the church for putting the course bulletin board, tee, and basket in the front yard; let your light shine!). This is designed as a beginners' course. Advanced players won't find it challenging. Intermediate-level players, like me, will find enough challenge to make it enjoyable, plus numerous ace runs and birdie opportunities.

+ As 9-hole courses go, Sunrise is really very good. There is good course design, flow, and hole variety. Most non-beginners won't throw many (or maybe any) drivers, only putters and a few mids, but most holes are technical and there's good variety of the types of angles and flight paths needed.

+ I was surprised to find some good elevation on a couple of holes here. By far my favorite hole is #8, which is steeply downhill, a blind tee shot, to a green surrounded by a creek. (I didn't notice if this was officially an OB creek, but it should be, giving the hole a great risk/reward element).

+ Easy navigation and flow

+ Brand new baskets

+ Good course bulletin board and info center with scorecards

+ This is an excellent beginner-level course. New players will find it fun, challenging (but not too oppressive), and it's a quick play. This is a great track to introduce new players to the game.

+ Very strong fun factor here and numerous ace runs

Cons:

This course delivers for its target audience: beginners. As such, it's not that challenging (which to me is the most important element in getting a high course rating). But as a beginner-friendly, 9-hole track, it's probably going to top out at around a 2.5 rating for me -- *maybe* 3.0 or 3.5 if it's super special. Sunrise UMC doesn't have a "wow factor" that bumps it above a 2.5, but it doesn't have any real flaws to knock it down from there either. Hole #8 is a signature hole and not something you'd expect to find on a 9-hole track. Props for that.

- Not very challenging for Intermediate+ players (and not designed to be). The 9th hole is the only hole with real distance for a wooded track.

- Natural tees: I had no issues with them and they're fine for a short course like this (and I'm not docking points here), but if you're a concrete- or permanent-tee only type of person, Sunrise doesn't offer that.

- Only 9 holes

Other Thoughts:

This is one to check out.

Quick Round Through The Woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Sunrise UMC ( United Methodist Church ) 9 hole disc golf course sits just west of Winston Salem . There is plenty of parking near the first hole . There was a kiosk near hole #1 , but no map or items . The first tee pad was made up of pavers with a wood bast , the other 9 was crushed rock . The signage was adequate enough , giving tee distance and a drawn flight path . The baskets were yellow Discatchers . The course was mowed and the grounds well taken care of . It looks popular with the locals , as there were multiple groups on this course while I played ( ps. the locals were friendly ) . I did not see a bathroom on the course , and I don't know if the church allows people to come inside for that .
The first hole is on the front lawn of the church and is flat and uneventful . After that you take a hard left ,walking down an embankment and ending up on the edge of the woods. The last 8 holes play in there . ( print the map just for this ) .
I can see why this course is so popular . It plays very short , but is entertaining , to say the least . Everything that hole #1 is , the rest of the course is just the opposite . Plenty of short easy but more technical holes , with a fair amount of elevation and a creek that comes into play on 4 , 8 and 9 . The course continues to flow well after finding #2's tee pad .
Some interesting holes woud be #4 a gulley throw across the creek . #5 a downhill run with the basket partly up a mound . #9 is a good finishing hole . at 285' , it is the longest hole with it's fairway rising upwards and to the left , and a stack of rocks in the middle of it . a picture hole would be the downhill 222' #8 , with the small green surrounded by water on the sides and in the back . Disc risk : very minimal . The holes are so short and mostly putter runs , that you will never lose much sight of your flight path . The creek water is low and you can fish your disc out of there easily . This course is a superfast play if not crowded . I played it in about 20-25 minutes . foursome in under an hour .

Cons:

#1 Safety . The course can bunch up in a hurry during peak play times . I almost got hit while fishing my disc out of the basket on #8 . Many of the players are going to be casuals and newbies . Try to be patient .
# 2. Short ans easy . This course isn't catering to the players that are trying to become tournament players . A good am could shoot about a 20 here . You can leave your drivers in the car . a midrange and a couple of putters are all you need to carry .
a bathroom and a couple of benches at the end of the course would be nice . Other than that , the course is what it is .

Other Thoughts:

Saying it is what it is and giving this course a 2 should in no way be insulting towards the course . For a 9 holer in a condensed piece of woods that the church owns , it is going to be perfect for some . The minister and the families of this church should get together for a picnic every month , play the course , then send their best 5 over to Bethel Church for a friendly challenge . The course is open to the public ( be respectful and not play Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings ) . This course also caters to dates , casuals , newbies , course collectors ,travelers looking for a quick leg stretch , one disc players . This is the kind of course that if I lived within a couple of miles , I would come here after dinner to burn my meal off . The woods is serene and scenic . You may not be challenged here , but , for a short course , you will like it .The church courses here astound me . Don't go out of your way for a 9 hole course , but if staying over or traveling through the Winston-Salem area , this is a worthwhile play .

Sunny Side Up and Down 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole romp through some nice terrain. 2-3 of the holes are actually quite good and the rest are fun to throw putters at. The woods that make up holes 2-9 are really nice and quiet, lots of old growth trees, and a creek runs down the middle of it. The land really rises and falls away to that creek, giving it surprisingly good elevation change. They're all more or less putter holes but you don't feel like you're playing the same hole over and over. Good course for learning how to shape lines with slow discs, especially in regards to flicking putters.

Fairly straightforward to navigate. Nice baskets.

Cons:

Hole 1 is kind of blah but nice for a warm up hole.

The tees are natural but not likely to see enough traffic to be too bad. Most of the holes don't need much in the way of a run-up anyway.

Mildly strange transition from hole 1 to hole 2 but nothing really to detract from, just a head's up.

Other Thoughts:

If I lived around here I'd play it a lot actually. It's a nice, quiet, little disc golf oasis. Being able to retreat to this nature spot amongst Winston-Salem's hellish traffic is a welcome respite. Putting in a DG course on this property is a no-brainer, I can't really think of anything else the church could've spent that time and money on that would've been more rewarding.

Nice short wooded course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a nice little course that does a good job of working with the landscape it has to give some variation. All but the first hole are wooded but the rest still feel somewhat open. Trees on the hole don't usually become a problem until closer to the basket. Most holes can be easily birdie and so this is a good course for a beginner player.

Cons:

There is very little challenging in terms of distance as every hole only needs a mid-range off the tee. Some basket locations such as on Holes 2 and 5 can lead to roll-aways if you miss the putt so watch out for that. Although it is currently groomed well as it is still fairly new, I could foresee problems with erosion and overgrowth maintenance.

Other Thoughts:

Sunrise is a very good short course for a beginning player or a more experienced player looking to get a quick easy round in. I enjoyed the variation in hole design and didn't feel like I got bored of wooded holes.
