Day-trip filler in the country

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 26, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It's a charming course. The tract runs counterclockwise around the church building in progressively deeper woods.

There's elevation change from no. 1 tee to its basket, then down into a cove with nos. 2-4. No. 5 stays on that plateau as does no. 6's tee, but the no. 6 basket is basically in a creek bed below (20-foot drop maybe). No. 7 has natural stairs to climb from its tee to its basket. Nos. 8-9 are back on the same plateau as nos. 2-5.

The baskets are new and the fine gravel in the new pads is swell also.

Glad the church and course are just off of a fairly active state road.

Cons:

The course is distinctly out in the country/farmland. You would probably not try to play disc golf while the people are having services on a Sunday, but with them not there, if feels pretty isolated.

The course also is not regularly maintained as far as clear fairway floors. Think about the color of the disc before you throw it and follow it visually to the ground, if it is autumn or winter. Leaves are ankle-deep. The rough also contains plenty of the thorny briar that is common in pretty much every mid-Atlantic forest. Any yanks, expect an adventure.

Navigating down into the creek bed of #6 would be better if you had some steps like you have at #7 coming out, but it is a church course (presumably) open to the public for no fee. So I can't really complain. Just bring a walking stick or the like to carefully get down and then back up.

Other Thoughts:

I do wonder how the church feels about nonmembers playing the course. There are no posted restrictions anywhere, but because this is private property, there's always going to be a trespassing question / apprehension for me. I don't know if who created the DGCR entry is associated with the church and has the authority. If so, there is no issue.

I don't mind that the holes are short. For someone of advanced skill, this is not going to be an attractive course unless you live close by and are looking for super-casual (or rehab) play. For the rest of us, if you are passing through to other places, Mountain View makes for a nice uncomplicated filler.

On a day trip, you can pair this course with those nearby (or at least, not so far away) such as Rockwater and Spilman. If you are doing a more expansive day trip in Spotsylvania etc, maybe adding Betty Queen, Loriella, Hawk Hollow (also private), Cannon Ridge (also private), Curtis Memorial, or Pratt is not such a bad idea.

The inspirational statements on each hole sign are allegorical to the general journey of life. I think it's a good way to invite disk golfers to the church itself without being overbearing.

UPDATE: Some holes now have a second pad (5, 6, 7, 9) or I missed them earlier. Might be a second pad at 4 also. There is now a mando stump at 6. No. 9 long is along the gravel driveway to the back of the church. Black ant mounds! Look before putting your bag on the ground!

Putter pit stop 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 21, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained property
Tee pads, though crushed stone are kept up
Easily navigated
Good signage
Nice baskets

Cons:

Short though that was intended
Same shot on multiple tees

Other Thoughts:

This course is less than 1/2 mile off 522, a road I travel weekly so I was excited to see another course go in along my drive.

Don't bring the whole bag out of the trunk to play this and don't expect to be wowed by the layout. The course is short, real short, I'm not a power thrower by any stretch and I can play this entire course (minus 1 tee shot) with a Zone and a putter. I was completely fine with that, in fact I really enjoyed it, the course is a perfect little pit stop to stretch your legs.

I ended up playing it 3 times, once to see it and then a forehand round followed by backhand only, made for a good time and was a nice little bit of practice.

Course plays beside and behind a church, the grounds are well maintained and so are the few holes that play in the woods. Course is beginner friendly, not a lot of lost disc potential, has a few elevation changes but there are paths and steps that make this accessable for just about anyone and it obvious that was a consideration when putting it in the ground. The course by itself would probably be 2 or even 1.5 stars but the effort they put into this, the tee pads, nice baskets, signage with motivational messages, cleared fairways, paths and steps, it gets 2.5 from me, courses like this are needed everywhere and are nice to see going in.

So not a destination course but if you're driving by and especially if you have a new player or someone who has never played before, stop by and have fun.
