A Dramatic Redesign

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I'm updating this primarily to reflect the radical changes this course has undergone. It is now an 18 hole course on par with the courses just south in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area.

Nice concrete teepads with 2 tees on each hole. Nicely updated baskets and tee signs as well. The course has grown in nicely to cover up some of the construction and potential mud, and is quite lovely in the spring and summer.

I've only played a few times, my memory is a decent mix of shot shapes, a lot of holes in the 250-300ft range, and a solid mix of open and wooded shots. Multiple ace run style holes as well as a few dogleg holes to keep it interesting

Cons:

Not a lot to say here; Hole 9 is clearly transitional across an old parking area to get you to the back area of the course. If playing the Red layout, there are only 2 par 4s, both of which are a little gimmicky with their dog legs. Holes 16 and 17 were kinda rough...16 playing through some very tall grass, and 17 with a fairway/rough that arent full worked in yet.

Other Thoughts:

A great update to what prior reviews clearly indicate is a course that needed some TLC. I would consider it on par with Deerwood and Big Woods in terms of challenge and quality; though with less wooded holes overall.

Needs Work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

In college five years ago this was a great course. Nine holes, dual tee pads, a varitety of different shots required. Great use of the space available, some water hazards, etc.

Cons:

Three of the nine baskets are gone due to flood damage from a few years ago. Many are bent or held up by sticks as well.

Signage is not lacking compated to what it was five years ago.

If it is your first time there it is extremely hard to navigate especially when three baskets are missing.

Other Thoughts:

Needs to be restored to what it was in the future. I will not be going back here again. It is a shame since give years ago it was a great nine hole course in a college town.

Needs some serious TLC

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 18, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Concrete tee pads
-Decent layout / use of area
-Dual tee pads for most holes
-Nice park, upkeep decent for mowing
-4 baskets replaced along rover (see cons)

Cons:

-#6 basket missing since destruction of bridge
-Tee signage missing on most holes
-#6 throws across someone's back yard
-Small tee pads, mostly getting swallowed up with dirt

Other Thoughts:

I have played this course a few times, but some TLC is still needed here. Damaged baskets from a couple of years ago have been replaced (#2, #3, #5 #7), but #6 is now missing. I think it was taken out when the old bridge over the river was removed. Signage continues to fade away or go missing. Honestly, there actually appears to be more space at the east end of this park, up away from the river to add or re-do this course. New tees and signage, replacing the #6 basket are needed here. Still potential. Just needs the right people behind it. Not a lot of better options in the area, so I may or may not play again when around here.

Fun 9 Holer 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This was a fun course. I enjoyed the cement teepads, which were narrower than the standard teepad, but also longer. Plenty of room for a good run up.

Varied shot selection. There were some holes that finished left, some finished right. Good use of minor elevation change.

This course makes great use out of the obstacles and space available. Creative course design brings trees into play. The demanded lines golfers are expected to hit on this course are very reasonable. It's not heavily wooded, but not boringly wide open either.

Course plays along the Cedar River, which is a very real threat on a few different holes.

Shorts and longs, providing more options than most 9 hole courses have.

Very beginner friendly.

Cons:

From what I remember, the signage was mostly clear, but could have been clearer. There were no tee signs on several of the teepads, which meant that I didn't even know direction to throw on more than one occasion. With the openess of the park and the close proximity holes share here, it was often unclear exactly which basket I was supposed to be throwing at.

Other Thoughts:

This plays like an old school course. Feels like it was designed for play when discs didn't fly quite as far. Still fun, though.

Fun, with a few bigger problems. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

There a variety of shots, given the elevation and trees and Cedar River, which provides a threat on a couple holes and some nice scenery. Multiple tee boxes are nice. Also, permanent signs make this course much more well-marked than most.

Cons:

The park is very small, and the course is, not surprisingly, rather tight. A couple holes are close enough together to where an errant throw could hit someone on another hole. Given its location on the river bank, goose crap is a very real problem on a couple tee boxes. Also, the No. 2 basket was missing when I played yesterday.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a good effort given what this park was dealt, and I had fun playing a quick round there while in town for work. But it just has a few problems that make me a little lower on it than previous reviewers.

Great course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great course for beginners and pros alike. Multiple tees allow for different hole lengths, and it adds some danger with the water! Nice and well kept very clean

Cons:

Tee signs could use some fixing up, and I wouldn't mine updating the baskets

Other Thoughts:

Use a float-able disc on water holes!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice variety of shots.

Two tee pads for each hole, allowing a notable difference in difficulty.

Great course for beginners, fun for the more experienced.

Easy to find your way around.

Not detailed signs, but easy to see, easy to read, and give enough info (hole #, distance). Maps really are not necessary, (aside from hole 1 long) you can easily see the basket from the teepad.

Cons:

Not many trees in play. I prefer courses in the forest, so take that comment as you will.

Hole 8 goes very close to a parking lot. I have only played this course with nobody in the lot, but were there cars there, it would create an unwelcome hazards (unless you like irate car owners, complaining about dents and cracked windows).

Other Thoughts:

When playing the long teepad of hole 1 (the teepad closest to the parking lot), note that the basket is just over the hill and to the right. If you can see the other teepad, it points at the basket.

very well kept corse, i like the many diffrent types of shots that i had to use during my round as in draws and fades

Cons:

tees were very narrow but not unplayable, holes were deffinutly confussing for the first time player, tees are not marked weather or not it is the pro tee or alternate or regular water hazard is more than likely a lost disc

Other Thoughts:

baskets were 18 chain inovas i prefer a 24 chain but your preferance might differ why i didnt put it in the cons

Nice riverside course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 11, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice well kept riverside park-even has a boat launch. Has concrete tee pads which are narrow however are serviceable. Larger trees used effectively as obstacles. 2 sets of teepads. 3 holes run parallel to the Cedar river.

Cons:

Some tee signs are missing or outdated. As stated in a previous review, the boat launch and walking paths can interfere with play, although, when I played the course, no one was there.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed the course, playing from the shorts as I was recovering from a back injury. Very peaceful setting. Worth the stop to play--about 3 miles from the major hwy. Prefer this course over the Wartburg College course.

Average 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple concrete tees per hole, good balance of shot direction, some elevation, good sizable trees, nice river-side setting.

Cons:

Tees are rather skinny, baskets are dated (single-chain DisCatcher), tee signage less than helpful with many baskets visible from the tee (Hole # and distance only), was a bit confusing to follow for the first time visitor. Boat access and bike path are hazards on many of the holes.
