Disc Golf at the Southern Lake 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

A disc golf course at Eastpark is the final piece of the crown that is the Stoney Creek chain. Black Butte, Stoney Gorge, and now Eastpark.
Eastpark shares many of the characteristics as the other two courses in that it is rolling hills and oak groves. The area is hot, but near enough to the water to go cool off as needed.

At the time of this review, the course is open, but still having some minor work done. So please take this with a grain of salt.

The course is located in the back area of the Ladoga side of Eastpark. This means there is a $8 day use fee per car. This is not really a con. This means that there is money being put into the system to keep the area clean, maintained, and room for future upgrades. There are also other very nice features that you would have access to on the site. (Excellent bass fishing)

The course itself has concrete tee pads, multiple pin locations, and decent signage. (There are a few items on the work list here. Teepad lengthening and signage correction)

Several holes play across the open and into well protected ping locations. Others rely on raw distance to add to the challenge. The one day I played this was not a terrible issue, but with knowledge of the wind that can come running through the valley. This place is going to be hard play on a windy day.

It is late in the season so the grass is not cut due to fire hazard.

In the layout I played the pin location leave a very good mix of left / right lines. A fair mix of distance, and several elevated shots. Pros may have less difficulty here, but ams will find the challenge well worth it.

There were several par 4s though there are some changes being made in this department. At least 2 of the par 4 are very legit.

Several holes stand out as excellent holes. Buck brush, juniper bushes, some fence lines, and the road along the side of the course make hole 2 a fierce challenge. Hole 6 has an awesome ace run with high risk. A washout gully and OB fence directly behind the basket. Hole 16 left all sorts of fun near the basket. The top of the world shot from hole 18 was also excellent. With a full cross wind, most people will not find it as short as they think it is.

The flow of the course is excellent for playing the course blind. There is a nice path between all tee pads / pins and next holes.

All in all I found the course most enjoyable. Due to the diversity it made the course a fun play. Being a left handed player, I do not find a lot of courses with a very good balance. This course hits it on the head.

Cons:

The tee pads are currently a little bit shorter then they should be for some of the hole distances. (Currently being fixed)
The tee signs are not 100% accurate with par ratings and a few distances. (Again, currently being fixed)
There was one spot on hole 17 / 18 where the Fair way and path to the next hole sort of cross, but is easily remedied by just walking off of the fairway of 17.

Over time this course is going to become better as the foliage grows and thickens up a bit.

Other Thoughts:

Eastpark is still obviously in the works, but even in its unfinished state. It is an impressive course that allows for an amazing camping / disc experience. On site camping, swimming, boating, fishing is all sorts of awesome.

With the support of the Orland Disc Golf Club backing the course, I see good things in Eastpark's future.

An easy 4 rating once the final improvements are completed.

Pros:

Another new course in Nor Cal

Cons:

Still under construction and by the time the baskets were installed and tee pads poured it was too late in the year for mowing due to fire hazard. Trails were cut though by Cal Fire Con crews from each tee box to each basket.

Other Thoughts:

Bear with us on the signage and par info, some of the par 4's are being switched back to par 3's after the soft opening. Also a couple of the distances were in question and will be rechecked and corrected. Also all tee pads will be lengthened either with compacted dirt or we will add concrete. Stay tuned folks this will be an epic course once all the bugs are worked out!!
