UnforgettableCourse . 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is unquestionable the strangest way I have ever graded a course ( 18 holes ) . First , you Must contact Johnny first before playing his course . If he will allow it , Johnny will play the course with you and his dog will tag along . Parking ? no street parking , so Johnny or his neighbor will have to okay you parking in their driveway . Equipment . Johnny crafted his own baskets for this course . They are solid and catch well enough . The tees are dirt and grass , and the signage is primitive, sits low to the ground , but does give you the hole number . Here is the kicker . So what !?!! You have Johnny along with you explaining his thoughts on the course , how he designed each hole and some of his adventures , pretty much as he beats your brains in Johnny Sias is 33 years older than he was when he won the Worlds , but he is still great and never tires out . The course is pretty much all woods and very technical . Crazy 8's elevation really starts to jump at about hole 8 or 9 . 12 Pole creek comes into play on your right for the 2 or 3 holes prior . Johnny starts you off with an easy enough hole #1 that has a garden to your immediate right and open to your left , with the basket just touching the edge of the woods . #2 is a downhill drive that is more open to your right , but the basket doglegs to the left and is protected by the woods and the rough . The basket actually sits inside a tree with the 4 main limbs guarding it , which makes for a great putt . #3 is an elevated tee shot that is parallel to train tracks , with the fairway continuing on over the tracks and down to a wooded fairway . #4 is maybe the 2nd hardest hole on the course . It is a narrow fairway drive that you have to set down at an opening maybe 300' away , then doglegs hard left to a very wooded fairway with the basket tucked in at the end . The course will eventually do a 180 and give you the shortest hole , a tight downhill right to left putter shot to an island hole . The next are the holes which keep the creek on your right with baskets protected by fairway trees . The course will soon turn to an elevation uphill left to right blast that has a landing zone halfway up . Making a left turn from there and you will traverse up and down and through many tight technical fairways . One hole has you throwing a long flat fairway drive , that takes you right to left down about an 8-10' drop to another flat piece of fairway . Then you must drive another long narrow piece of fairway , over a giant log , then uphill to the basket which you might not see until your 3rd shot or more . I call it the Heart Breaker . The rest of the course makes use of it's tight narrow fairway shots that are crazy hard . If you shoot sub 60 on Crazy 8 , you should get a key to the city . The fun factor soars here . The challenge factor is off the charts without it being overbearing . I think Johnny said the par on Crazy 8 is 67 ,and you will have to bring your A game to shoot under par . Disc Risk : medium . There is some rough on the course , and there is always the possibility of a rollaway on an elevated drive , and maybe a couple of the holes bordering the creek when the water is high . Bring your water ( carry out what you carry in ) , because your workout starts quick . Signature hole : lots of memorable holes , but maybe the train track drive on #3 or the dogleg #4 would be my choice .

Cons:

Not sure . Having the course owner's positive attitude and encouragement alongside you pretty much trumps any shortcomings that are present . Playing after a hard rain would be almost impossible .

Other Thoughts:

I think that this course rivals all of the better courses in the country on design alone . Johnny took a lot of time and effort ( he has cleared this course and upkeeps it pretty much on his own) to make this course challenging with the fun factor still being here . I have played many of his designed courses from southeastern Kentucky and Western Virginia , but he outdid himself on his own private course here . Where else can you go that has a 2nd course ( His original , Lucky 8 ) on private property , too . (I played so poorly in front of him during the Crazy 8 round , that I took a map and banished myself to the Lucky 8 for a solo round for my punishment ). Johnny couldn't be a friendlier host . Just please call first . My Recommendation : Not intended for families , casuals , or newbies . Incredible course for intermediates , pros and travelers . Play It at least once in your life !!!!!

Pros:

- Heavily wooded, but not too bad considering the leaves are off.
-Playing by the Railroad tracks and along 12 pole creek added a nice touch to the round.
- Nice basket locations, a few difficult ones.

Other Thoughts:

Course not completely finished, used a few holes from Lucky 8 to get 18 in. A fun course to play and a lot less challenging than Lucky 8.

Some Relief 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Variety in layout (thanks to Johnny Sias).
-Mostly heavily wooded, providing a challenge.
-River and railroad in play on some holes.
-Nice homemade baskets.
-Tees are dirt, but for the most part flat.

Cons:

-A couple tees were on the shorter side.
-Some of the fairways had fallen trees due to a recent storm (Johnny is mainly the only one who maintains it, so it's not too big a deal).

Other Thoughts:

This is the younger sister to the Lucky 8. It has a similar style to it, but some shorter holes mixed in and not every hole makes you feel like you're being chewed up and spit out. It really has a great balance between easy/moderate/hard holes.

However, as of writing this, the course is still not finished. There are 18 holes instead of 9, but the layout is still being worked on. Johnny is hoping on having it finished by the summer of 2014. If you get a chance to play a round with him, I'd recommend this course first, then the Lucky 8 on another day (when you really feel like punishing yourself).
