Woods and parkland course to enjoy during beachtime

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 9, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice combination of a parkland layout (holes 1 through the beginning of no. 3) with a more densely-forested section for holes 4 through 8. The transition holes are 3 and 9, where you are either throwing into the woods or out of the woods.

Well-maintained and well-attended without being overrun, at least when I came. It was late in the afternoon when probably most play had already happened that day.

The course is also a good walk without being overwhelming. The holes are sufficiently spaced apart in both woods and parkland, enough to not interfere with one another too much. That though may not be the case during a tournament when there are 72 people playing all at once.

I like that holes 1 and 2 (and 3, for that matter) allow you to air out your drive and warm up your arm. Nothing worse than having to start with technical touchy throws in the woods, which is a formula for failure for many of us.

There are two pads per hole and apparently a few strips for 2 other positions. I played the forward tee pad which is white.

There's good challenge in all the holes without being overwhelming and without being too easy, at least for someone as mediocre as I am.

Maybe the toughest hole is number 17, but I think it is a generous par 4. At least according to the sign for the white tee. I believe there's some ongoing debate about the layout and the pars...shall see next summer what is the end of that discussion.

Cons:

It is mostly flat with just a little bit of elevation change on the latter holes of the course (say from no. 12 down to 13 and the 15 fairway). Several folks will find the flatness extremely boring, but I think the mature trees all over give the course challenge.

It is a pay-to-play course, but not alot of money for a day fee. And you can play this course multiple times a day without hurting yourself at all to get your money's full worth (whatever you determine that to be). It appears that many wait until the money-takers have left for the day and play for free. That's a neutral observation, not a recommendation!

I am not sure if you can pay at the ranger station (which is just across the way from the disc golf course) rather than at the fire department office (yes?) which is across the street from the park entrance. Both offices were closed when I arrived.

Other Thoughts:

The rest of the park looks like it might be interesting. I didn't have enough time to investigate much but shall next time. Newport News Park is structured in many ways like New Quarter Park in Williamsburg, though (I believe) distinctly smaller. I wonder if they have the same designer. The entire parks, I mean.

Newport News Park DGC was recommended to me by a local player who I encountered at Bayville a few days earlier. I had originally planned to play New Quarter on my way home but decided I would substitute Newport News. I'm glad that I did. Thank you, Bayviller!

If you are on vacation to the Virginia Beach area, you might consider playing Bayville, Munden Point, Newport News, and New Quarter (yes, all of them) while you are in the area. Along with bicycling, disc golf at the beach makes for a nice companion activity to lots of splashing around in the bay and ocean surf!

Start Shredding the News

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 16, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Newport News DGC has a good 18 hole layout with converging 9's. Excellent for beginners with no water in play on a very flat plot of land. Most of the fairways are spacious, but do have enough trees and shrubs around to create some need for shot shaping. Holes 4-8 will test your precision with shorter, heavily wooded holes.

Multiple concrete tees at each hole allow for versatility, and tack on extra distance for the more experienced players. The basket positions are well placed to make for interesting approaches and putts, as well as an easy to follow layout.

I liked the wooded portion of the course. Hole 9 is also a cool drive. There is a fence that runs the right side of the fairway almost all the way to the pin. A basket is planted under trees and shrubs as the fence turns to the right, blocking a direct approach. 14 and 15 have a little extra flora to contend with on the back 9, and take a bit more shot placement.

Cons:

The park does have an entry fee, nothing restrictive but bring a few bucks.

It can be very busy, we played through 2 or 3 groups as many people enjoyed a really nice February afternoon. Some patches were muddy, but overall conditions were good after a bit of rain earlier in the week.

I like a few hazards to contend with ideally. The wooded section is tough, but water and elevation changes are totally absent.

Other Thoughts:

I swung through Newport News DGC on the way back to Virginia Beach after playing Waller Mill. I was happy to get in another course on the first day of my trip, and the two complimented each other nicely. One extreme and challenging and one more casual.

My round of 55 from the white tees was a confidence booster after a humbling score on the first course. The par of 61 is a bit generous, I didn't think any of the holes warranted more than a par 3. Gold tees are said to be out there, I didn't see a lot of them marked but I wasn't seeking them out either.

Great beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Mix of woods and open holes; open holes still tend to have various guardian trees to provide a challenge
Two sets of nice concrete tee pads per hole; one basket per hole

Cons:

Holes 1, 2, and 17 can stay pretty wet if there has been rain. Hole 1 turns into an absolute pond; 2 stays a little soggy and has a few low spots but isn't too bad; 17 has a muddy area you have to cross over (there are stepping stones to cross it); a pond can also form around the base of the hole 15 basket. These aren't really "cons" per se, just something to be aware of ahead of time
Very mixed bag of people at this course: more litter, more people that don't pay attention to groups behind them and start to slow you down, big groups that don't break into smaller groups, etc.

Other Thoughts:

As a slight beginner/terrible player, I LOVE this course. There's some challenges but I still can't throw very far and since it's so short, I've been able to par or birdie every hole (now to work on consistency!) so it's very encouraging. It's also nice to be able to knock out a quick round on this course on a weeknight or as a second round to your day. It's also very flat and there's a lot of shade (all the woods holes and even the open holes have a decent tree covering, at least on all the tee boxes) so playing in summer isn't as brutal as some of the other courses in the area.

Beginner friendly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 13, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Two tees with a variety of shots. Most holes are reachable for intermediate and above players from either tee box. The course is easily navigated and is a nice easy walk. A casual round can be done in under an hour here.

Cons:

It tends to be VERY wet in the winter. No drainage on 2 and 17 especially. Hole 1 can be a pond.

The course is quite busy in the summer now adays. A lot of casual players dont know better and slow people up. The local army base seems to funnel a lot of players here which is great but really can slow down the progress of better players.

There is a local club that maintains the course fairly well. They also tend to think they own the course and have been very rude to me and others who are not members and just want to play a quick round. The etiquette of golf is lost as a group of 9 local pros playing gold tees wont let anyone by.

Other Thoughts:

Bring waterproof shoes in the winter, bug spray in the summer. Only four garbage cans on the course nowadays so littering has picked up. Ridiculous that you have to pay to play and it went up last year. Rangers do come around and hassle about beer ( I dont drink) and checking for passes often. Club does a great job holding events etc but can be a bit sanctimonious about themselves.

Great course and club 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a little of everything - Playing from shorts after getting crushed on a more difficult course is a decent ego boost, and then playing from the longer pads (or the golds even) will put that ego back in check. There are actually four pads per basket, however the very shortest are mostly not marked at this point, and the very longest are missing a few markers too. The white and red pads are very clearly marked with nice concrete pads. Every white/red pad has a bag holder, and the white pads have the tee signs. Almost half of the course is wooded, and the rest plays open. The city will occasionaly mow the grass, however the local club puts most of the time and effort into upkeep at this park.

Cons:

This course can get a bit crowded with new players who do not understand common courtesy, especially in the late afternoon. The regulars will never play in huge groups, and will always let slower players pass. The same cannot be said for the random people with 1-2 discs and groups of 15, so watch for these groups before you start and if possible start on the other side of the course to avoid it.

Other Thoughts:

The local club puts on a weekly tournament on Tuesday nights, so keep that in mind when you want to play that afternoon and be courteous. There is also a ladies night on Thursday evenings, which also is when random doubles are played. Check the postings on the board by hole 1 red for details on upcoming events.

Perfect Beginner Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 14, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The park is very close and accessible by way of I-64 and close enough for regular play for anyone in NN, York County, or Williamsburg.

The course is mostly separate from the rest of the picnic/playground areas in the park which makes for good play away from the rest of the visitors.

There is a decent mix of open/wooded holes. They are pretty well maintained and the fields are mowed regularly.

The wooded holes on the front 9 (4-7) offer a chance to get some good lines, but arent particularly crazy.

Cons:

Overall the course is solid but a little boring. There are no standout holes, and there is virtually no elevation change to speak of. As a result, many holes run together in my memory (specifically the back 9 which run through sparsely wooded fields).
The back 9 are almost all straightaway shots with a few trees near the basket just to force a little strategy, but nothing challenging.

Other Thoughts:

This was the first course I ever played when I still lived in NN. Despite the cons I've listed above, I do think this course offers a great introduction to disc golf for any beginner. The holes aren't too long nor challenging, which is good for learning the ins and outs of tossing a disc in the woods and in a field.
All in all, Newport News DGC is definitely worth a visit, although not one to go gaga over.

Beautiful Plain Jane 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course surprised me. I still don't understand why I liked it so much. It meets none of my typical criteria for a good course. I will attempt to come to grips with my nonsensical joy here. It was easy to get to (right off the exit), easy to walk (flat sandy soils), and easy to navigate (intuitive)...the basics are here bathrooms, signs, 2 concrete tees per hole.
The disc golf had some wonderful variety with only one open long distance bomber hole (#2) the rest of holes required low canopy power and precision, tight woodsy line hitting, and throwing around moderate obstacles in semi-open mowed parkland that seemed removed from other park activities. I ran into more deer than people despite the mowed and manicured feel of this park. I threw a variety of discs, distances, lines and took a smattering of birdies, pars and bogeys. There seemed to be moderate challenge on every hole which induced me to think I could birdy off of every tee. A relatively stress free round with minimal chance for disc loss (sans leaves perhaps)...highlights for me were the thumber line on 16, the array of technical shots from 4-8 the unique dive into the woods on 3, and emptying my bag on 18...it's one of those visually I can park it every time holes...fun. This course probably grew on me for the fun factor of running baskets combined with low stress and the variety the 2 tees provided. I played the longs and then the shorts. I enjoyed both rounds. Probably the perfect amateur course as well as a great place to practice on a daily basis due to the variety and lines demanded here without ever overwhelming a player.

Cons:

It's flat. Perhaps 1 hole ,#17, that gives the impression of a hill, but lets be honest it's just a gulley. It doesn't have any true par 4s. There is not any remarkable or special hole here that would draw me back to it or make me talk about the course to others. It's just a plain flat disc golf course in a park really. (Which in this case for some reason works)

Other Thoughts:

Even though theres nothing special here there is enough solid golf and variety of foliage and shots required that I was never bored here. I would equate Newport News to that girl that appears plain but you are attracted to her anyway because she's just fun to hang out with and for some reason she grows on you.

Simple, fun course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very traditional/basic disc golf course layout. Sometimes less is more, and this is the perfect example of that.
- Very good variety of holes. All the wooded holes are on the front 9, back is more open. Good job of using the terrain - trees, shrubs, etc - to create the different layouts.
- Course does a very good job of having long and short tees present different looks. If you play both tees, you'll see very different shots on many holes.
- Great course to introduce newbies to the game. It's not overly difficult, so will present plenty of birdies and ace runs for more advanced players.
- Very easy to navigate the course. Large posts indicating hole number and long & short tees. Only suggestion is to have hole number listed on more than one side because on several holes, the number was on the wrong side.
- I loved the hooks they have at the teepads to hang your bags. It's a very nice touch that I've only seen here and at New Quarter.
- Good, descriptive tee signs. Good tee pads.
- Great, enormous park that has everything - camping, fishing, hiking, all different sport fields. If you can't find something to do here, you really need to learn how to enjoy the outdoors.

Cons:

Some are going to have a problem with the layout and/or terrain. There are a few unimaginative/open holes. #2, at 487 ft and no real obstacles, is the perfect example of this.
- No real elevation. Course is essentially completely flat.
- This is not a course for big arms. Only 2 holes longer than 400 ft.
- Course is next to a main road, so not very secluded. About the only park of the park that doesn't give that "in the woods/nature" feel.

Other Thoughts:

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this course. As already stated, this is a relatively basic course, but it offers plenty of fun.
- Most of the holes were very similar - mostly open, throw around the trees and get close enough for your putt. #16 long stood out because it was so different. Blind teeshot to a basket blocked by trees and shrubs. There are enough openings to make a shot, but you can just as easily hit one of the trees. Very good risk/reward hole.
- The 2 holes that play along the fence (#3 & 9) presented a different look. On #9 especially, it presents another obstacle if you try to go through the trees (instead of throwing around the trees and fence).
- You could easily squeeze in a couple rounds here in under two hours and/or while having the rest of family occupied by everything else in the park.
- The course reminded me a lot of Sugaw Creek in Charlotte. Tehy're very comparable in layout, hole makeup, and so forth. And in turn, the similarity is reflected in the ratings. It's worth checking out if in the area.

Nice municipal course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course gives several different looks before settling on one for the back nine. #1 tees at the end of the parking lot along the fence line toward the road and is a straight forward 250 open fairway to a pin guarded by a pair of trees, good warmup hole. If your not warmed up yet you will be soon, #2 is wide open 400'er where you can air out, and make you wonder why it is that wide open pins are the hardest to approach? Nice and loose now? Good, now you dial it down for a bit while you enter the technical phase of our course. #3 is an open 200ish to a pin just tucked into the woods through that one section of open fence. Don't miss your entrance here or you may be pitching out. #4 - #8 are classic Virgina woods holes and probably my favorite part of the course, with #7 being the toughest. You begin to see daylight again at the ninth tee where you find a hard dogleg right and an open fairway. The back nine is where you enter the moderately wooded phase of the course, some of these seem repetitive but are enjoyable nonetheless due to the unique pin settings. Most of these are 200-250' through moderate fairways that usually offer a couple choices, but the challenge is getting the disc to the nestled targets, adding a nice dimension to therwise pitch-and-putt holes. These are mostly flat and through a large pine forest, but #17 has a bit of a grade and is probably the best of the back. The good news here is that except for the wooded section of the front you won't be spending much time (in any) searching for discs. It's also literally almost right on I-64, if you've got an hour to wait for the Hampton Roads Tunnel traffic to clear then you've got time to play NNP.

Cons:

The course isn't long, I can hit double digits down from the short tees and I have a rag arm, but the long tees spice things up a bit. Being in Tidewater, it lacks the elevation changes I require from a great course. The back nine definitely has a deja vu element.

Other Thoughts:

On one hand you could look at this as a short, flat course without any wowzer holes, on the other hand there's an element of fun here that keeps me coming back here on my trips to VA Beach (though New Quarter is my first priority). There are lots of birdie opps but for the most part you have to earn them, which along with the technical woods holes pushes this one up to Very Good for me.

Enjoyable Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course has a good mix of open and wooded holes, and if played from the red tees, some are moderately long. It seems as though the course is well maintained, and there are some challenging tee shots over, around, and through fences.

Cons:

It hadn't rained in a few days when I went and while I understand that mostly, it was just morning dew, there were a few spots where the ground was saturated. The transition between the front and back nine is a bit confusing, but with some help from the map, we made it work. Since it is in a coastal area, there isn't a lot of elevation change, and some of the wide open holes could be longer (why have nothing in the way if you have to hold back on your distance?).

Other Thoughts:

Apparently you have to pay to play this course. A friend of mine lives up the street, so we figured we'd head over in the morning, and apart from the one other group that was playing, we didn't see anyone else there at all. I saw that the course gets busy, so I would imagine that going early (9-11AM) would be ideal on the weekends to avoid crowds.

Good course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The closest thing to a home course I've got. This is officially a pay-to-play course, but I haven't been carded in 30+ rounds. I'm not really sure where you're supposed to pay anyway, but it certainly isn't anywhere near the course. Given all the other stuff in the park, I don't know that the money raised by disc golf really goes back to the course anyway. I don't understand why I can walk the course with my dog for free but if I want to throw a frisbee while I do it I should drive 5 miles out of my way to pay $2. Anyway, rant over. Maybe I should have put that in the cons section.

The pros are that it is straightforward and signed very well. Two paved tee pads per hole (red is long for some reason, white is short here) plus some gold and blue posts which are tough to find. I've never played them but I have stumbled across them from time to time. There is a great mix of true tree holes with real fairways and more open holes, but few straight shots. There is a Tuesday evening mini, but I haven't made it there yet. You get to see some deer if you're out there at a non-busy time.

Cons:

Can get muddy. I see lots of "Boy Scout" or "Church Youth Groups" out here playing in a pack of 10 or 15 with one real disc golfer among them. Usually they're really good about letting you through though. I'm always worried that someday I'll actually be carded by a Ranger and have to learn where I'm supposed to go pay. The public par is a joke. You shoot from the closest tees and you get an extra 7 strokes to do it. There are 2 "Par 5s" under 400 feet, a 178 foot "par 4", and two par 4s under 300 feet. It is reasonable to play the whole thing as a par 3 knowing that there are 3 or 4 holes where you'll need a nice drive, a nice approach, AND a nice putt to make par and a hella lucky shot to get a bird. A few of the holes are close to the road, so the road noise distracts a bit, but it isn't bad.

Other Thoughts:

Favorite hole is #6 from the longer tee. Desperate par 3. If you make it to the short tee on your first shot you're doing well. #15 and 16 are also fun since neither allows the straight shot but both have multiple other options.

Newport News DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 3, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course that has benches, trashcans and bag stands throughout. The variety of the holes makes for different throws to be used. There are signs on the pins when the next tee isn't obvious pointing you where to go (top of the pole midst the chains). The ranger station, campground entrance, has score cards for your hole distance reference.

Cons:

Heavy leaves in the fall/winter make it hard to find the discs after throwing. Wet woods long after it has rained. It can get crowded during the summer and difficult to 'play through' when multiple holes have lines. If you do not have a seasons pass you have to drive to another entrance and pay and then make a left and left again into the entrance where the DGC is (see below).

Other Thoughts:

This course has great signage, 4 tees (check online for the blues and golds) and 1 pin per hole. 9 in the woods, 9 open in the field, Favorite Holes:1, 10, 11. If you do not have a seasons pass you have to take the 2nd entrance and pay $2.15 for the day, keep your receipt as the Park Rangers do patrol the course and will ask to see proof.

Great all around course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 2, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course can be used by anyone of any skill level/age and be challenged and enjoyed. All of the baskets have 2 tees and some as many as 4. Poles to hang bags, benches at most tees, concrete pro (red) and am (white) tees, and good direction signs. With this and a course that is well maintained by the local club and city park people you have a great environment for all.

Cons:

This course can be hard to play in the fall when the leaves fall. They are so thick that it can sometimes be like finding a needle in a hay stack when you search for your disc after your drive from the tee. Use bright discs it does help. It can also be crowded on nice days. To find the blue and gold tees you will need help from a local.

Other Thoughts:

Watch out for hole 7. It is very technical. My favorite is 3. Its a blind shot over or through a fence into some hardwood trees. It can be aced. I have come close and witnessed it done. It is a pay to play course and you have to travel to the other side of the reservoir where the campground is to pay. They also have discs available to buy (Innova and Lightning) and rent. Drinks and snacks are available..
