Solid Fort Worth Area Course

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.091 Rating) A medium length course partially under a live oak canopy.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - Recommended to me by DGCR member aclay, whom is a local player and also my guide for this one. When I first looked-up the length of North Park, I never would have guessed this place would have been as friendly as it was for such a wide swath of skill levels. On paper, and as I experienced, the short tees are Intermediate level. What makes it appeal to so many more skill levels is the forgiving landscape. Just about no overgrown areas. The chance of losing a disc is near zero. These are key attributes that will appeal to both Novices and Rec players. In addition, there are also back tees here, an aspect that will likely appeal to Advanced level players as well.
- CHALLENGING - Speaking of higher skilled players, this one is surely going to please players with 300 to 400 foot arms. Although labeled a par 54, this one honestly felt like at least a par 56 from the short tees. A couple holes were close to 500 feet long and I'm not aware of any regular players that can bomb plus 400 and then plays the short tees. Anyways, having a big arm is going to be the biggest separator in scoring. There are however numerous moderately wooded holes and pinging a tree early is going to make getting par real difficult. As alluded to before, I think the short tees are Intermediate level and the back tees are Advanced level.
- AMENITIES - DISCatcher baskets and big concrete tees are a plus for any course. I want to say the tees were 6 by 12. There also two of these pads on 17 holes. Other amenities include alternate basket placements, practice basket, posted course map and seating at about half of the holes.
- NAVIGATION - I had a fantastic guide for this one, so I may have missed something. Overall, the flow felt good enough, but partially flawed. First, it helps that there's a posted course map, but it doesn't help that it does not reflect the updated layout as the map indicated hole (10), is now new hole (1). The tee signage is ok, which I'll touch on more below, but it's nowhere near the point of unacceptability. Once someone realizes that (10) is (1) and (1) is (10), a quick reference of the map should clear up any questions while on the layout. Most transitions are short and several are intuitive.
- RAW BEAUTY - I thought the course had some modest appeal to it. Personally, I just really like the look of holes under an older live oak canopy and there is a bunch of that aspect here. The course is well kept up, but there is noticeable relic trash like broken glass and small bits of plastic littered in numerous spots. The course is also surrounded by urban sprawl. One may argue that this place is a desert oasis. Overall, I scored North Park a touch above average for beauty.

Cons:

Only one moderate issue and a few minor things or preferential cons
- TEE SIGNAGE - If there was one thing that this course needs, its updated tee signs. Perhaps new ones are on the way. The tee signs are very simple, just a number and distance. A couple looked like they were falling apart. Updated signs as a whole here could really add some sparkle.
- SAFETY HAZARDSA handful of holes have a park access road in play. Not really a big deal, but its still not ideal. I have a feeling this course can get busy due to its location and appeal factor. Players will need to be more aware of their surroundings more than normal here.
- HOLE VARIETY - About average in my opinion. Generally lightly wooded to moderately wooded. Several of the live oak wooded holes have blended together in my memory already due to their similar feel. There are a couple short holes, numerous of them play between the high 200s and high 300s and a couple holes are also over 500 feet from the back tees. Mostly a flat landscape, although there is one nice downhill play on (6) old (15). Likely no water in play unless it had rained recently, or it lands in the one low spot on the dry creek bed along (8) old (17).

Other Thoughts:

North Park is solid disc golf. It's not exotic, but it has very respectable gameplay in a forgiving format. This course is going to be perfect for leagues and perhaps even small one-round tourneys. Also good for cards composed of multiple skill levels and big groups. Overall, this one felt like a mid 3.0 post play and sure enough when I tallied up the aspects and attributes, it settled right into that number. I think this rating number is about all this course can achieve considering the size of the park and the quality of it. Players traveling to the metro area should definitely consider checking it out if you find yourself within a half hour to forty-five minute drive, but if you're coming to DFW to play the cream of the crop, this likely isn't it. For those that live on the east side of Dallas, I don't think this is a must play course, unless you are trying to play all the top 30 metro courses, or so. It's a good play and all, but it's just not quite disc golf nirvana.
- TIME PLAY - It took our three-some and one walking tag-a-long, almost 2 hours to complete the round. I think we talked a lot, but it was a good time.
- THANK YOU - I got to experience my first Fort Worth area course with DGCR trusted reviewer aclay. Pretty ironic that when we spotted each other pre-round that we were wearing shirts with identical disc golf sayings. "How to Play Disc Golf: Throw, Swear, Look for Disc, Repeat." A pleasure meeting you sir. Thank you for being our guide and I hope we can do it again someday.

Slightly above averge 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Most of the tee pads are good
Nice variety of shots, short, long, wooded, open
Decent amount of shade
Good use of limited land
Pretty good flow
Good use of trees

Cons:

Used UDisc app, finding next hole is lacking without it
Bugs can be bad later, I suggest bug spray

Other Thoughts:

I'm trying many new courses. If this was my local course, I would probably play it all the time. I live about 35 miles away and have better courses closer. It was a nice slightly above average course. Some of the holes are a bit long for a beginner. It is a pretty good intermediate course

My favorite hole is #17. IT has a mando between 2 trees about 50 feet in front of the teepad, maybe 10 feet apart. There is OB just past the basket

Worth the trip! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-It would be hard to lose a disc here, unless you throw into someone's back yard.

-Generally well shielded from wind.

-Nice concrete tee pads and multiple tees.

-The elevated basket makes for a nice signature hole.

-Nice balance of open vs. wooded shots.

-Good elevation for a DFW course!

Cons:

-Right off of 820, it's very noisy.

- The layout is weird and convoluted (but I'm glad they made a DG course with this abandoned gas well land.) It is easy to shoot at the wrong basket in several spots. Take a cellphone pic of the course map at the start!

Other Thoughts:

When you come out here, make time to also check out Arcadia #2, which is 5-8 mins away. This makes for a great Saturday afternoon!

Good Middle of the Road Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- This course is not as difficult as some of the DFW courses, but is still a fun course with many mandos to keep it interesting.
- There are multiple tee boxes and pin locations on this course, which also helps to keep it fresh.

Cons:

- The hole layouts themselves can become quite monotonous. It feels a bit like playing the same hole over and over again sometimes.

Other Thoughts:

A good beginner or tune-up course!

fun course but bring a map 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-lots of trees, a creek, and elevation in play
-design makes good use of a limited amount of space
-nice dual concrete teepads, bridges over the creek
-creek is shallow and there is little rough, not likely to lose discs

Cons:

-very difficult to navigate. no signs, no numbers on the baskets or tees
-course is pretty simple even though there are a lot of trees, not very challenging for the advanced player
-blue baskets are not the easiest to see, neon yellow, orange, or pink would be awesome
-no stand out holes or signature shots

Other Thoughts:

After years of construction woes, this park is finally finished and looking great. The flow is unintuitive but the layout manages to maximize the use of a small amount of land. That said, the course doesn't feel crowded and there not any big issues of safety since most of the holes that are close together have lots of trees separating them. The trees are not real dense and have little to no undergrowth but there are enough of them to force lines and block errant shots.

The course is pretty short from the short pads but it is great for beginners. There is a better variety of distances, lines, and challenges from the long pads. The creek offers an extra challenge but will not eat plastic since it's only inches deep and a couple feet across at it's widest. A handful of holes make use of the elevation on the north end of the park.

Overall, this course offers a fun round, especially for the beginner or intermediate player, but only if you know where you are going. Make sure to bring a map or you might be frustrated. The obstacles make for a good score spread if you're playing competitively. Worth driving to play if you live in the metroplex and I wouldn't be disappointed if it were my home course. I think the rating has unfairly suffered for the navigation issues and previous issues with construction in the park.

Construction DONE!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 23, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-multiple turain
--Up and downhill shots
--Wooded and open field shots
-brand new tee pads
--most holes have two tee pads
-signs marking what holes you are at
-nice bridges

Cons:

-extremely easy to get lost in pile of baskets
-when it rains it is extremely muddy
-bridges are not really located in the best spots
-grass was really long

Other Thoughts:

The grass is really grown up right now and so your disc could get a lost (especially for my yellow sidewinder). Bridges not really located in the best spots but it does look like they are going to be putting in more. Also a funny note, there are some fun dogs up on the hill that freak out when you bring a dog to the park. This park is great for dogs as well.

The Drilling Is Gone 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 16, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 baskets.
Easy to walk terrain.
Challenging tree obstacles.
No disc drowning water. The ditch is retrieval friendly- not deep and the water is clear.
Many baskets have 2 tee pads now and some of the longs are l-o-n-g.
Ample parking throughout the park.

Cons:

Construction on I-820 is ongoing but not intrusive.
There is a pipeline station that isn't really an obstacle but sometimes crew trucks are parked near it.
The grass is coming back but it's still quite muddy at times where it hasn't.

Other Thoughts:

I had fun. There are some long drives and some places where you have to play through the trees. Nice change ups from one tee to another.

Update 1-5-12
Had to give this another disc! With the new tee pads in place, many baskets now having two tees, bridges and a general clean up- this course is well worth being my home course.

Under Rated Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great combination of hole lengths, tight and open holes as well as righty and lefty holes. This course requires so many different types of shots. You have to thread the needle on on hole and then next you get to air it out with a wide open 500' drive that still demands accuracy to even par. Now that the oil company is out the course is starting to look a lot better.

Cons:

Next to no signage.
The dirt tees get rutty and rocky. Caution is required.
Hard to navigate for newcommers.

Other Thoughts:

This course seems to be very underated as far as it's difficulty. It seems that the city is starting to rebuild the course. Hopefully there will be some new tee pads put in as well as some signs.

Pin 11 sound wall 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The oil company moved from #13; I believe, which only leaves the sound wall on #11, as j0atz stated. The creek by #17 has gotten a lot more clear, since they left. This makes it easy to spot a lost disc on those go for shots that fly too long. Good course for beginners with premium plastic, because the trees will tear up the cheaper plastic. The terrain and vegetation allows for easy spotting of wildly thrown discs.

Cons:

Still another drilling company working diligently and blocking # 11. The other company has left; however, they make-shift road remains in a few holes. They removed several trees along the hi-way, so now it feels less secluded.

Pros:

***UPDATE 11/8/10***
I love playing this course. Once you know how it is navigated its a lot of fun to play. The company who put in the gas lines paid for all brand new baskets to be put in, painted to point you to the next whole direction as well.

I find most people who don't like this course, can't play the course as well as it looks like you should be. Super technical, and tests your upshot skills.

Yes not all cement tees, but some things you just got to deal with.

Fast and short course. Not a crazy amount of walking. Challenging forest.

Cons:

If you play during business hours there are most likely construction workers around. They're gone during the weekend.

Difficult to navigate. Not any real direction on where the next tee is. Had to use photos from this website to find the next tee's the first time I played it. When there are markers, they're pretty run down.

Other Thoughts:

Decent, but overall I think the course needs a make over.

Better as a 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 13, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a decent course. I personally preferred it as the 9 hole course it originally opened as. The newer 9 is confusing and seems rushed together. Lots of good shots, and never too busy as other nearby courses can be. There are both long shots and short, precise shots.

Cons:

Confusing layout on some parts of the course and rudimentary navigation help, such as arrows spray painted on trees. A couple shots across wide open fields will wreak havoc on windy days. Tiny creek which is just a small

Other Thoughts:

original 9 had a good layout and plenty of fun shots. The added on portion is ok but parked cars sometimes prevent play on a couple holes. One basket is even elevated in a tree which adds a degree of difficulty and is a nice touch. Not very highly trafficed and well maintained.

Fun course, some decent holes, especially when mowed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 4, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of shots, nice use of limited elevation available. Well-placed teepads. Ample parking. Very shady, which is perfect for TX summer. When mowed, is really nice.

Cons:

Signage could use some more detail. You need a map -- or better yet, locals -- to navigate the course for the first time. Some confusing places where which basket to throw to isn't clear.

Grass can get really long between mowing -- up to your knees -- which kills all skips and low shots and encourages bugs.

Other Thoughts:

My first playthrough of this course was in 2009 when it was newly put in. It's nice to see how it's worn-in over the years.

I've had the benefit of playing with friendly locals both times I've been (2009 and 2017). Not a stand-out course, but an enjoyable diversion and a good mix of shots. I'd give this course a 3.5 if freshly mowed, and a 3.0 otherwise. High "fun" factor, and the shade really is awesome for a Texas day. Creek is slow-flowing and does encourage a lot of bugs.

My Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 4, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has really come along way since it first opened. This course is a somewhat a fun and challenging course from beginning to end. There is a really good variety of short, long, left and right shots for both, left and right handed players. There are plenty of mando's spread throughout course, to keep the game challenging and not to mention, plenty of shot variety needed to score well on most holes. There are plenty of trees to make this course challenging and also provides shade in the hot summers. There are to sets of concrete tee pads on almost all holes, except for a couple of holes. There is also multiple pin locations on each hole to add challenge. There is signs on most holes providing distance to each pin. There is also a course map at hole 1 and after hole 9, to keep you heading in the right direction. There are plenty of trash cans and some benches on selected holes for use. There is plenty of parking throughout park for your convenience. And last but not least, there is a practice basket provided at hole 1, so you can get warmed up for your round.

Cons:

On really nice days, you might want to get there early because it can get really crowded!

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course is very fun and is a must play if you are in the area. It can get very crowded on really nice days, which is a good sign, saying this is a very fun course to play.

Neat Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

I thought this course was neat because of some of the tougher shots in the forest and the elevated shot where the hole is like 10 feet off the ground. Kind of an easier course to make ace runs at. Easy to birdie too....

Cons:

A little too easy even for the semi-serious players. A little hard to navigate at times..... Sometimes it was too easy throw an errant throw and still get an easy 3.

Other Thoughts:

Fun to play but the metroplex offers better options.
