Canadian Championship..

What division should I enter? I don't have a pdga membership, is it required to compete in the open/advanced division ?

I see a few people I know in the open and advanced division, I've beaten some of them on a good day on a course I play frequently.

Although I have never played in a tournament and just last year I could only play 2 games a week due to my forearm style... but I've been working on my backhand and its good up to 280ft now and accurate, while my forehand is about 315ft on wooded holes and 350 in an open hole.

I actually get more birdies it seems on 315 foot holes than 200 foot holes. I have never got a 2 on 400+ foot hole though.

What division should I enter?

Hey Dan,
A current PDGA membership is required to play in Open, but not required in Advanced. Rose Hill East plays really long; so long that you might be left a bit behind in the open division. Based on your distance I would say that you would be comfortable in Advanced. There will be guys in Advanced that can hit the a 400ft drive if they need to, so you will still have plenty of competition.

Thanks, I am in BC, but have not played the Kamloops courses, so unless I can get in before the tournament and play them maybe I should enter amateur, considering I've never competed in a tourney before. If I do well in amateur, then move up to advanced next tournament.

I have pics for Rose Hill East, but they are way over the maximum 600K per picture that I'm allowed to upload. I'll see about reducing the file size but it won't happen this weekend. Sorry, I'm all booked up.

Okay, I'm a PDGA member now, and trying to choose between Amateur Advanced or amateur Intermediate. I think intermediate might be good considering it's my first tournament. Will both of these divisions play from the long tees? Would each play 3 rounds in 2 days? How does it work?

If I entered advanced, I think I could finish somewhere in the middle; basing this on looking at other players I recognize and seeing their scoring on kamloops courses during previous tournaments.

Advanced is by far the deepest feild and in my opinion is the place to be. If you think you can get to middle of the feild then I would say dive straight into advanced.

If I recall correctly, Int plays from short pads, advanced plays from long, and open plays from Pro pads if there are pro pads for the hole. You will probably be playing two rounds on Saturday and one round on Sunday. Clinics, driving competition, and Rocky Mountain Challange (ALTA vs. BC; you have to qualify in the Duck series to play this but it should by a good event to watch) will be on Friday.

This is all from memory so it might be set up differently, but given that it's only a 2 day event with 3 courses I can't imagine that there is really be too much room for major differences in schedule or format.

Ya, that 600K size limit sucks. I just tried out www.picresize.com for some Maui course pics that I've been meaning to get up here. Was pretty quick and easy. They have a batch option where you can do multiple pics at once, just select, upload and then set your size.

My pics were 2.4 MB before and I read that 600KB sizing is about 570 x 350 pixals so that's what I used. Turned out that the final size now is only about 100K so maybe using the 75% smaller option would have been better.

I'm registered now in intermediate, but pictures would be interesting. Mostly interested in elevation of holes, and wether holes favour right hand flicks or right hand backhand, and so forth.

It's a good mix of both, long holes lots of elevation. Wind is usually a factor. It's in the mountains so if you are used to sea level pack some less stable stuff. Long grass, long distances on East side, you need a spotter and a chair.

I'm in the process of uploading pictures of Rose Hill East (Black Rose) to my profile. Should be done by the weekend, maybe earlier. Here's a link. I have to load them backwards so that they are in order when I'm done so I have 15-18 complete.

FYI. I have tried to center the basket in every picture, although some might be a bit off.

Those pics and tips are VERY helpful, even though i am sure I will forget the tips later, but gives us a much better idea of current conditions. All is appreciated!

I saw on the event facebook page last night after asking, that the clinics are tentative for around 5:00 on Friday. Definitely interested in checking it out but I have to lock down my travel plans first.

I can't seem to find that event facebook page you mentioned. I'm glad I read this though, as I am signed up for the clinic, and will have to make sure I take friday off, and head out early to get across the border.
