Destination cities for quality AND quantity?

Due is in NC with an RV guys. With a week's time he isn't likely to spend 4-5 days driving. :wall:
Here's the actual question:

That said, if you were so inclined to take a road trip and try and get in as many really challenging, fun courses as possible in a short amount of time, what city (in your estimation) would offer this sort of experience?

He didn't ask where he should go, he asked where you (as in the reader) would go. We don't know if he's actually planning on driving a camper out to wherever we suggest, just that it's part of the hypothetical question he's posing. He may or may not have a method of travel in mind. It could depend on the location he chooses. In this case it makes a lot more sense to answer the question the OP asked rather than a question you made up based on his profile.

Yeah it sounded like a general discussion/dreamer thread to me. I mean if he were posting about a specific vacation or road trip, he probably would have posted in the vacation and road trips sub-forum.

Eastern Pa has variety, challenge, and quality as well as the best and largest disc golf shoppe in the country opening this spring.

With one week, this would be my trip. I'm usually interested in a flexible/relaxing trip with plenty of options. Also depends how much money you want to spend.

Wilmington -> Charlotte to play a few courses. Maybe visit the Whitewater Center on a night when a band is playing and potentially do some rafting if it's the right time of year (cheap for visiting and beer, but rafting is pricier). This will also be closer to campgrounds. Another evening I'd hit the Kart track in Mooresville for some racing (55mph go karts) - which is a short drive from Hornet's Nest, Nevin and Bradford and also on the right side of town if camping near the Whitewater Center. Karts are about $20 per race, but huge fun. Or spend an evening uptown and catch a minor league game.

Charlotte -> Asheville. Play Richmond Hill for a huge difference vs. Castle Hayne. Visit a few of Asheville's breweries. Maybe spend some time playing at the pinball museum which is only $10 to play 30 tables all you want (also serves beer). It's usually about 10 degrees cooler than Charlotte which could be welcomed during the summer.

From Rodneys List I have played in Charlotte, Augusta, South Lake Tahoe, Austin, Portland, Minneapolis, Allentown, Kansas City, Des Moines, Tulsa, Highbridge, Peoria, N. Indiana and Rock Island

For ease of bagging courses go for Charlotte, Minneapolis, Des Moines, Peoria or Kansas City.

I loved the Portland area and courses, but they are very spread out and there are long trips between the best courses. I never had a chance to get to them all. I would only recommend, Augusta for the IDGC and Highbridge and Lemon Lake for those disc golf complexes, for quality not quantity course bagging.

I would recommend Tahoe for the unique vibe and style of disc golf.
I LOVE the Peoria courses and can't wait to get back there to play the newest ones. I would only recommend the Twin Cities in the Summer or Fall. The other Midwest destinations would be excellent Spring through Fall. I thought Austin was OK, but would avoid it in the summer.

For those of you looking for a warm weather destination in November through March for course bagging...try the Phoenix Metro. It is not on Grodney's list because it is more quantity than quality, but the desert courses are very, very interesting. I enjoyed my extended stay over Christmas and New Year and was able to play 20 new courses. (I also traveled to Tucson.) It is awesome to play in shorts and tee shirts in December although some mornings were pretty chilly at 35degrees...brrr!

I thought most of the 18 basket courses were all worth the trip. Several of the 9 hole courses that play as 18 were also enjoyable. A couple of the city park nine holers left a bit to be desired. However, all the (18 hole) desert courses were my favorites, including Buffalo Ridge, Paseo Vista and both Red Mountains. I don't know why folks hate Red Mountain so much. I fell in love with the South course.

I bagged all the Phoenix Metro courses except I was unable to play the Green Mountain courses as they are closed to Disc golfers in the winter.

Staying in Tempe, South Scottsdale or West Mesa will put you in the heart of the disc golf action.

It's always interesting to see such posts from people like Discette & Mashnut, people who've actually played many of the destinations and can honestly compare them.

Some of my favorites so far are Charlotte, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Ludington MI and you might even be able to count whatever tiny town Highbridge is in since they have so many options onsite.

Highbridge Hills is in Highbridge,WI. I go up to the Ashland area (15 miles north of Highbridge) about once or twice a year, and while your disc golf options are limited to pretty much HH and a few mediocre 9 holes, there is some awesome things to do outside of disc golf when you're in the Lake Superior area. A perfect week out there for me would be to camp at Highbridge, play about six days worth of disc golf and spend one day up at Lake Superior kayaking in the sea caves.

Sandy Point Disc Golf Ranch about 75 minutes away should be included if you're making a special trip to the Highbridge area.

I really just want to know how that chart was compiled. As a Denver area resident, do not come here. We have some great mountain courses but they do lack compared to some of the best championship courses.

Of the places I have been. Go to Charlotte, NC.

I personally need to make the Portland, OR trip soon.

Hibridge, WI and Texas is also on my list along with Kansas City.

See the link in post #11 on this thread, to see how it was compiled.

Quality post, Suzette. I'll query Phoenix next time I do my list, in case it qualifies.

I doubt it will make the list. If you use Tempe zip 85281, all 21 area courses are shown. Only three are rated at least 4.0 and none are rated over 3.75.

Even if it doesn't make the list, Phoenix still fills the bill for a winter course bagging trip - especially for those looking to get away from the snow and cold.

not sure what that means

Thanks bro. I'll remember this next time I'm in Delaware. :D

I know you're in NC. I guess i got worked up when you said something about a week in an RV traveling around playing disc golf. A typical vacation for me would be driving over a thousand miles, playing 10+ courses in about a week. so, from your starting point, you could play all of the great courses i mentioned in about a week.

Mashnut and I have noted that our tastes in top notch courses are very similar. So, you can add me to anything Mash replies to in this regard. :)

*I might value the Quad Cities courses a bit more than he does though...*

I was thinking more along the lines of, these threads always explode with people screaming that "My city is the best! It's better than all these other cities...." Most of whom haven't ever played those "other cities".

You folks who have traveled extensively, and played most of the competing meccas, can offer perspective that all the local boosters cannot.

I appreciate that.

My city is the best! Well, village of 66 people, Bald Eagle is the only show in town, but I'll let you park your camper here as long as you like, I have enough layouts to keep you busy for a few days :)

As far as cities are concerned, it doesn't get much better than Charlotte for quality and quantity - plus a day trip into the mountains or triad area is top notch. If I had a camper and wanted to park in one place for several days, the quality and quantity of Highbridge can't be beat. Or maybe I'd go to Vichy, MO because that place is awesome. Appling/Augusta GA is up there, paired with Atlanta it competes with the best. Delaware is more of a state than a city, throw in Eastern PA and MD and I start drooling over the courses. East coast of Wisconsin is pretty killer - The Winter Park, Rollin Ridge, Silver Creek trio is awesome plus many others to be had in the area. Cincy deserves to be in the discussion. Louisville might not have the epic courses, but a high concentration of great ones. Bowing green can be paired with Nashville for some solid fun golf.

Wasn't there a whole thread about this based on someone's sibling's math class probability problem or something?

yup, my sister did one based on a 29 mile radius from singluar points that created the best score within, counting only courses that were 3+ and with at least 5 reviews. after it was sent through the fire of DGCR the resulting list was...

1. 975 - Dallas - Fort Worth, TX
2. 926 - Charlotte, NC
3. 812 - Farmington Hills, MI (Ann Arbor, MI)
4. 737 - Minneapolis, MN
5. 693 - Kansas City, MO
6. 690 - Augusta, ME
7. 680 - Denver, CO
8. 647 - Austin, TX
9. 632 - Hubbardston, MA (Worchester, MA)
10. 619 - Tulsa, OK
11. 612 - Allentown, PA
12. 579 - Portland, OR
13. 555 - Orlando Park, IL (Chicago, IL)
14. 552 - Johnson City, TN / Linville, NC
15. 537 - Atlanta, GA
16. 526 - Oxford, PA (Lancaster, PA / Wilmington, DE)
17. 522 - Cincinnati, OH
18. 503 - Hart, MI
19. 494 - Des Moines, IA
20. 485 - Augusta, GA
21. 460 - Highbridge, WI
22. 452 - Houston, TX
23. 431 - Kalamazoo, MI
24. 419 - Lake Tahoe, CA
25. 409 - St. Louis, MO
26. 405 - Louisville, KY
27. 403 - Los Angeles, CA
28. 399 - Memphis, TN
29. 392 - Auburn, CA
30. 388 - Cedar Rapids, IA
30. 388 - Bowling Green, KY
31. 376 - Seattle, WA
32. 371 - Oklahoma City, OK
33. 370 - Raleigh, NC
34. 368 - Davenport, IA
35. 363 - Columbus, OH

I later went and created my own list using courses in a 50 mile radius with raings of 3.5 and up. In this one however the courses were rudimentally weighted by distance from the marker. I think this one more so gives you the best road trip destinations if you're driving around hitting multiple areas while the first one would be more of a singular destination type list.

1. 33.9 - Dallas-Fort Worth, TX (East Arlington)
2. 33.8 - Charlotte, NC (Sedgefield)
3. 31.5 - Augusta, ME (Litchfield)
4. 28.4 - Ann Arbor, MI (Wines)
5. 27.5 - Denver, CO (Kings Valley)
6. 26.6 - Worcester, MA (Rutland)
7. 25.5 - Kansas City, MO (Turner)
8. 23.6 - Minneapolis, MN (West St. Paul)
9. 23.3 - Reading, PA (Lorane)
10. 23.0 - Portland, OR (North Plains)
11. 22.0 - Highbridge, MN (High Bridge)
12. 21.9 - Lake Tahoe, CA (literally inside in the lake)
13. 20.8 - Austin, TX (Downtown)
14. 20.1 - Houston, TX (Bridgestone)
15. 20.0 - Des Moines, IA (Ankeny)
16. 19.9 - Ludington, MI (Bass Lake)
17. 19.8 - Davenport, IA (Downtown)
18. 19.2 - Orlando Park, IL (Joilet)
19. 18.9 - Atlanta, GA (Norcross)
20. 18.4 - Tulsa, OK (Wagon Wheel)
21. 17.2 - Augusta, GA (IDGC)
22. 17.0 - Linville, NC (Newland)
23. 16.1 - St. Louis, MO (Florissant)
24. 15.7 - Raleigh-Durham, NC (Hope Valley)
25. 15.6 - Cincinnati, OH (Lebanon)

Ha! My city isn't even a village, just a crossroads, but our courses have an average rating of 4.38! You can camp too---I think you have---and we have enough layouts to keep you busy and wear you out. And if you get tired of that, within 2 hours we have 41 courses rated 3.5+.

And you don't have to play in the snow.

My city is the best!!!
