question about distance throwers

I really struggle in windy conditions. All my discs start turning over. My 167 gram magnets are the worst. If you can throw 400-500 feet, are there discs that you can't throw? Are there discs that you just over power because you have so much arm speed? Or do I just really suck throwing into ahead wind?

Heavier weight discs don't turn over as easliy <more momentum>. Also, lower profile discs don't have as much of an issue. A Magnet is a fairly tall and understable disc, so not so much good in winds. When it gets windy, most players switch to more overstable plastic. You often see people only throwing discs like Firebirds, Predators, XXXs and so forth when it's windy.

Depending on winds, it's the only time my PD2/PD/Firebirds come out for the tee on a straight hole. Learning to hyzer flip a disc is a great skill to have as well, even on non windy days. I carry a Valkyrie in my bag as my straight driver on tunnel shots that are 300-320ft, or with OB on both sides. A gentle hyzer flip and it'll float straight with a minimal fade finish. On a day with headwinds, I'll hyzer flip my star boss for max distance.

If you're already throwing 400- 500' in normal conditions, you just need to throw really overstable discs into a head wind.

Stability, speed of disc and weight all play factors in headwinds. Good luck throwing an understable putter into a headwind without it flipping over quickly.

I think understable is the biggest factor. Anything with a negative number on the high speed side of stability will hate headwinds. The bigger that number (-2, -3, ect...) the more it will flip quickly. Terns are a fast disc, but, I would never throw one in a headwind because of that -2 number. They just turn right or flip with my style and arm speed. You can throw a Firebird into a headwind and it will fly nice and straight. On a clam day, it will end way left (RHBH). I use Zones, Eagles, Felons and Max weight Bosses at the moment for headwind. On a calm day, I'd throw a Envy, Teebird/Crave, Volt and 159g Boss.

Boss are very stable discs, but, if too light, the wind will mess with them quite a bit. So that plays a factor as well. My 159g Boss does some very strange things into a headwind.

Just remember, a disc thinks it is traveling faster into a headwind, and so acts like you threw it way harder. But don't worry, there are discs out there that can handle power. And, if you are the strongest guy in the world, releasing with a hyzer will also compensate for headwind, as long as the disc is stable enough to not just flip and turn right and never come back. But I'm sure there is some super fast, super stable disc out there that even the farthest throwers can't handle even in the heaviest headwind.

Max weight Missilen or World come to mind as discs that could jive with the strongest of the strong. I've never thrown either, so someone else will have to correct me on that.

Also, look at that low speed stability number. The bigger it is, I.e. 3 or 4, the better it will be fighting against wanting to turn right (rhbh) into a wind. That ending fade will always be holding that disc in the air and won't let it crash and burn.

Force yourself to throw in the wind. I was a solid player, but in any wind I didn't know my ass from a hole in the ground. Take your bag out to a field or open hole and throw all of your discs. All of em. Make notes if you have to so you know what does what. My first tournament it killed me. I dropped from 3rd to 6th because of bad disc selection in the wind.

I feel like this is a troll post.

Yeah I was thinking that too, maybe I mis-interpreted what the OP was saying though. But I got the impression he claimed he was throwing 400-500' and didn't know how to handle a headwind with that kind of power. But it seems unlikely that someone who is that advanced wouldn't have figured that out long ago, so who knows?

World numbers are lies!!!!

Definitely not as overstable as advertised, not even a little bit. I hyzerflip them out of the box lol

If you're throwing 400+ you already know what to do, and we all know that. #trolling

Ive often wondered the same thing OP. I dont know anyone personally who can throw over 430-440 ft. 400 ft power is unimportant because many throw that far with plenty of form flaws. 450+ Is a good judge(really like 500 ft would be a better judge)

To rephrase his question, would a smooth distance thrower be able to throw a mamba flat and far at full power? Or would it be a roller always?

For someone like lizotte its different. He says he torques alot making destroyers unpredictable, so i would think a thrower like him couldnt do a full power throw on a mamba without it doing barrel rolls if thats possible.

Thanks, guys. I don't throw anywhere close to 400 feet. I was mostly wondering if my discs would be worthless if I ever figured out how to throw better. Since my magnet turns over so easily.

Not worthless, you can always use good roller discs.

Magnets are not good into headwind pretty much regardless of form, but they can be thrown without wind or into tailwinds well over 300' with good form. Faster or overstable discs will perform better into headwind. Understable and slow discs do better in tailwind.

There are discs that I never consider throwing often, because their stability isn't useful to me. Like a Renegade or Mamba. It's just too much work figuring out how much it's going to flip on X, Y, or Z holes when the sign distance is 50' +or- the real distance.

What kind of drivers are you throwing, sir? Or are you just throwing putters?

Jim Myers has 6x World Distance Titles and throws Mambas all the time, even into headwinds.

That's why I've never heard of Jim Myers. If he threw a Destroyer into a headwind he might be good enough to hear about.
