I voted Nuke. Farthest thing I've ever thrown. Katanas are not as dependable as far as turning over too much when you don't want them to.

Katana is the great equalizer for mediocre players. I can throw a Katana well over 350 and I am a noodle arm.

The problem with this poll is that the Star Katana is so different from the Champ and Pro Katanas that they are completely different discs that have to be thrown completely different to get the near same results. I have not touched my Pro Katanas in a month, I can get a more consistent and soft turn out of the Star so I kicked the Champ out of the bag and replaced it with a Monarch (the same shot but for a shorter distance). Plus, I know the Star will finally fight back at the end of the turn, aiding in landing flat or correcting itself in case it turned too far right.

The same problem exists with the Nuke. The ESP is so completely different than the Z except if you are talking about the slightest tailwind. The ESP is too unpredictable in a headwind. While it probably is a good hyzer flipping disc, I am not good or consistent with that shot, meaning that to throw relatively flat, I do have to back off a little (although I still get great distance with it). If it does flip, it is going straight into the ground. The Z Nuke however has more HSS and LSS, meaning that it is far more versitile. It fights a headwind better. Finally, it can handle all the power I got and as long as I get a clean release, it will always fight back at the end. Plus, the Z Nuke is the first forehand disc I have been able to get to go more than 300 feet accurately (my forehand is almost as bad as my hyzer flipping).

So, I carry both the Star Katana and Z Nuke in my bag and they can cover all of my maximum distance shots.

Star Katana is hands down the goto...if the Z Nuke is more understable

try the Star...nice domie 175 ....ummm...umm. um:thmbup:

you are right about dependable and distance....but the star is way different(more dependable)....the katana can make more shots than the nuke IMO

if i toss it at about 80% power with a release angle at 8 o'clock (RHBH). it flips to 11 o'clock before locking in and then flexes and, with proper height, fades in at the end.

you wouldnt consider that a disc with a significant amount of turn?:\

Yes THAT NUKE is less stable than the Avg.............that is what I am trying to say!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most will be more HSS

its a 171 so thats sort of what i was aiming for. ive yet to throw a full-weight z nuke.

Weight really means nothing..........some of the most stable wide winged discs are 170-172

You just need to learn to pick discs better

weight really means nothing?

tell that to the guys who wont compete in the japan open because it takes too long to relearn full-weight discs.

i had a spot for a long, understable disc on my bag. lost my go-to wraith which had a lot of high speed turn and a pretty hard fade.

i got the disc i was looking for and you sound like an ass for assuming otherwise.

With a nuke i couldn't really seem to do anything special with it, same with a katana, but now the katana I have a few good shots with it. So I would pick the Katana.

scoot you told me ealier it was flippier than the star katana in another thread?

If it is more stable...I have a place for the nukeZ in the bag:thmbup:

No I didn't..........I have only thrown one Katana (Eco) which the 970 owner said was the most stable he had found and it was still somewhat flippy.

I have never said anything like that and you are free to look.

waiting on two star katanas..hoping they're not too flippy. I'm pretty excited to try them this weekend. I max out right now at about 340 with a star wraith

I've got the following...all very different discs.

Pro Katana - 171 - domey (LOVE IT)
Super easy to throw. Low for line shots, and 15-20ft off the ground for nice predictable s-turn. I get about 350 on course with easy effort, and 400ish in the field where control is not so much an issue.

Star Katana - 171 - flat (HATE IT)
A super-overstable monster. I cannot throw this unless I'm looking for a huge hyzer bomb. I keep bringing it out in the field, but it's not getting any easier. For me, it flies similar to my max weight Star Destroyer..I just do not have the arm for it, course or field.

ESP Nuke - 169 - mid-domey (REALLY LIKE IT)
This takes more arm from me, but if I release it low with a lot of snap I can get more distance out of it on course than the Pro Katana...about 375ish. I find mine to be reliably slightly overstable, so it's a nice disc to start out over water or OB, knowing it will eventually come back some. I have to be thinking about technique more with this disc, but it's rewarding.

Reference: I throw a reliable TL 300ish, Star Wraith 325ish on course - both with effort.

i prefer the Nuke, its more consistent, ive thrown a couple memorials, and several FR's and disc to disc they are more similar than any plastic the Katana comes in, ive had star, champ and pro (not r pro tho, I imagine its a giant POS)
and not only are they all vastly different discs, they all are inferior in the reliability department. I could get the katanas out farther on a perfect throw, but it took an absolutely perfect throw. I think all of us can agree, no matter how good you are, nobodys throw is perfectly dialed all the time. Theyre worth having in the bag if you are at a long and open course...and its not windy...in any direction...or slightly wet...and youre footing is perfect...and then you have a spot on throw, if all that comes together for you often, then you have a winner.

Champs are the best tana's IMO, my star is wayyyyy more stable than any of my champs which is wierd, its kinda piggish. I assume this isnt typical, but still.

Actually, I think it's typical for production run Star Katanas. Mine was very flat and very overstable. I couldn't get it to turn at all and it had a hard and early fade. I think most of the early tourney runs before mass production were the "perfectly" balanced Katanas, or so I've heard.

Based on these reviews, if I like the Surge, Pro Boss, and champ Valks for driving then it sounds like I should try the Champ Katana?

I can't believe how close the poll is, WTF?

I don't use a Surge but when the Nuke came out it had very similar. characteristics and I was telling people it was a faster Surge.

I would feel both of them out and go with the one that feels the best.
