While this is generally true, I disagree for this tournament. Playing smart at this course means, once you fall off the pace, you need to start going for riskier and riskier shots to catch back up. If you're at +1 with 5 holes to play, you basically have to birdie out to even have a chance. If you get a slightly poor lie on a par 4, it doesn't matter, you have to go for it to even have a chance. That generally leads to a riskier shot, which could easily result in a double or triple bogey. Do that twice in 5 holes, and you're at +6.
Additionally, you are not an intermediate player if you played this version of Nevin blind and shot a 68. That would be rated 975ish. Are you sure it was the same layout? Or are you not an intermediate player?
INT players shoot 975 quite frequently. They also tend to shoot 850 fairly frequently.
