Could this influence PDGA disc design?

Sonic is a common word it cannot be trademarked as a word. A design of the word Sonic which is unique can be, as well if Sonic is the title of something like Sonic the Headgehog. Or if you changed the spelling. Like to like Sonik.

This is the reason why big pharma makes up words for their products or uses extra letters, scientific names cannot be trademarked either.

Are you sure about this? Sonic is being used as a product name, not in common usage. Fairly certain that Sonic drive ins have protection on the word "Sonic" among restaurants. Why would a frisbee name be any different?
 
it doesnt look like it could ever be thrown far with that design? Looks like too much mass spinning through the air creating more friction? Like a putter that flutters all the way to the basket. I don't see this ever being anything more than a toy to take to the beach?
