No Par 3’s at ALB!

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Albion is the northernmost borough in all of Pennsylvania. This small community has a big park in the heart of town, which hosts a LONG 9-hole course!

+ Each hole has multiple tee locations with brightly colored posts marking where to throw from. There is a detailed hole map at one of the tees. Baskets are new and in good repair.

+ Big arms will have a field day playing here. There isn't a single par 3 on the course, with the shortest hole from the long tees still being over 400 feet. Despite this, generous pars (Four par 5's) will allow newer players to put up a respectable score.

+ Navigation is pretty easy to follow with arrows on most holes.

+ The creek is incorporated very well into the design. You'll see it come into play on #2, #4, #7, and #9.

+ The holes in which the creek comes into play are definitely the standouts. I'd say my favorite is #2.

Cons:

- The lack of distance variation is a little unfortunate. From the long tees, every hole falls within the range of 434' to 562'. There's enough room to sprinkle in a couple par 3's if it was in the budget.

- A few holes do play a little close to potential pedestrian traffic. The approach for #9 splits between two pavilions, with a couple of cars being parked within "striking" distance.

- The short tees really don't add much value. Nearly all of them are directly in front of the long tees, and don't provide much in terms of variation. Additionally, both sets of tees are all natural pads (with a couple tee shots from available roads/sidewalks).

- For a 9-hole track, there are a couple of holes that do feel like fillers. #3, #5, and #8 are all wide open straight shots with no obstacles.

- The pars listed might be a little generous, especially for the bigger arms that this course would appeal to.

Other Thoughts:

"ALBDGC" is a pretty solid 9-hole course that might be longer than some of the 18's in the region.

I'd like to see a few shorter holes mixed in to provide more variety. But for what it is, there is fun to be had in Albion!
